Cowboys add rookie lineman

12:42 PM CST on Wednesday, November 30, 2005
From Staff Reports

The Cowboys have signed offensive lineman Cory Procter from Detroit's practice squad and waived second-year guard Ben Noll.

Procter is a 6-4, 295-pound rookie free agent from Montana, where he was a three-year starter. Procter was a first-team Division I-AA All-American and an All-Big Sky Conference performer in 2004.

He was signed by Detroit to its practice squad on Sept. 4 after being undrafted.

Noll, signed as a free agent when released by the Rams last September, appeared in four games for the Cowboys this season.

Looks more like a center as he's only 294 pounds. Doubt he'd be a OT.

BIO: Three-year starter who also saw time with the first team as a freshman. Used at tackle and guard in college.

POSITIVES: Intelligent blocker with excellent awareness and technique. Works to bend his knees, stays square and works hard until the whistle blows. Displays vision, patience, and effectively uses angles. Solid position blocker and uses his hands to keep defenders from the action.

NEGATIVES: Not explosive off the snap into run blocks, lacks adjustment and range. Has difficulty finishing blocks and best in a small area. Does not play with much balance and exploited by quick, nimble opponents.

ANALYSIS: A versatile lineman who saw action at several blocking positions in college, Procter possesses a good feel for the game and understands the position. Durability and work ethic could help him latch on as an inexpensive backup, though he must improve his playing strength to have any real chance of sticking at the next level.

All the relevant crap I could find about him. Detroit listed him as a Guard.

Corey Procter: First-team 2004 Division I-AA All-America offensive tackle for Montana

MONTANA senior offensive tackle COREY PROCTER (#75) ... currently weighs in at 6'4, 295 pounds... has been timed at 5.25 in the 40... will shift to left tackle after playing right tackle, as a junior... also has experience inside at offensive guard, a position he played earlier in his career... shows good footwork and agility for his size... but lacks ideal upper-body and play strength... has bulked up from 278 to his present size over the past two years... spending the majority of the off-season working to increase his weight room strength... thought of as a quality worker and leader by offensive assistant coach Dominic Daste.

Corey Procter OL Procter (6-4 5/8, 305) ran his 40s in 5.25 and 5.31. He had a 25½-inch vertical, an 8-foot-5 long jump, a 4.62 short shuttle, no long shuttle, a 7.60 in the cone drill, and 15 reps.

This is what I like about BP -- if he doesn't see development he cuts bait. If Jerry were still in charge Noll would be Javier Collins-ing around here for another few years.

Amazing, Noll goes from being the top backup at several OL positions to out on the streets.

Goes to show the quality of our OL depth. Top reserve one day and an unemployed bum the next.

Maybe this means Columbo and Peterman are coming on? Wait, that would be too much to ask for.

If Johnson is out, we will probably bring up Tarullo, who can back up G and C.

This doesn't sound like a move to account for Al's injury -- if that were the case it would have to have been Tarullo coming up since he's been practicing with the team all year.

BP isn't going to throw Procter in a game without a few weeks of practice.

If you can't make it as a backup OL on this current team, you might as well hang it up. We're as deep as a kiddy pool.

I never said it did.

It does not change the fact that if you sign someone off a PS you have to sign them to the 53 man roster, or that if Johnson is out Gurode would be our only center.;)

Benjamin "Bad Penny" Noll will show back up. He's one of those guys that I think will end up on Bill's speed dial.

huh? did you get the part where we filled Noll's slot with Corey Procter off of the Detroit PS? That was the move -- Noll for Procter. Why make this move now if we were going to bring up Tarullo?
