(Seems a little out of date now with the San Diego news, but I thought you might like to read what he had to say today).
Norm: Why on God's green earth would you cut Patrick Crayton? If you are going for the SuperBowl, you have got to explain to me why you would cut Patrick Crayton? Who is -- I don't want to even talk about who's the 3rd best receiver on this team. I will back-off and not get into entangled arguments about others who may be starting or others who may be ahead of Patrick Crayton on the depth chart. Let's just put that aside for a second.
Norm: Who's the fourth best receiver on this team? That's easy -- that's Patrick Crayton. Do team's usually get through seasons without any injuries to their wide-receiver corps? What? Are you kidding? Of course, not.....Of course, not. Like we've said, Roy Williams has played one full 16 game season in his career. That's not a knock on Roy! You can go all over this league and find good teams with problems at wide-receiver. Look at them. Look at those teams. Look at what Minnesota's dealing with, Sidney Rice is hurt and he's gonna miss a half-a-year. Look at what New England dealt with last year with Wes Welker. Just go all over the league. It's almost just pick a team - isn't it Mike. Just pick a team!
Norm: The Jets love Santonio Holmes - he's just suspended 4 games. And you can go on, on, on, on in this league for dinged wide-receivers - Oakland has already lost their number 1 receiver - "Chaz" Schilens - for 3 to 6 weeks. They're everywhere - people get hurt in the league and wide-receivers who get exposed to some of the nastiest hits in football - through no fault of their own wind up on the dinged list.
Norm: Is this club going to need its 4th wide-receiver this season? If you told me absolutely not, Norm, then I might listen 'slightly more' to an argument to move Crayton. By the way, the club may be asking as much as a 4th rounder for Patrick Crayton. If Patrick Crayton is worth a 4th rounder, then what in hell are you doing trading him! That's number one and - number two - are you crazy? A wide-receiver in his 30's that you've already signaled that you may not want - and he's making 2 million dollars a year, and you're trying to get a 4th rounder for him. But, anyway, put that aside.
Norm: Let's go back to the basic question here of cutting a number 4 wide-receiver here or dealing him for, ehhh, a sixth round pick or something like that. Which even there I don't think the Cowboys can get.
Norm: Why would you do that if this is a SuperBowl year? Why would you do it? I understood the movement of Flozell Adams out of the left tackle position. I would have understood a little more going to Flozell and saying 'We can't pay you 7.5 million dollars but we can pay you three to stay and we'll guarantee the three.' What are the Cowboys paying Alex Barron? 2.73 million. I ask you plainly, who would you rather have? That's a no brainer. But I understand Free being moved to the starting spot there - and I under stand with the lack of production, Hamlin being moved out of the Saftey job at that type of money - 4.5 million dollars. I understand that.
Norm: Somebody's gotta fill me in about Crayton losing his job? He had 20 less passes thrown to him last year than Roy Williams and he had 1 less catch? Pardon me? If you list the productivity of returning Cowboy wide-receivers from last year, who's number 1? That's easy! That's Miles. Who’s number 2? That's also pretty easy - that's Patrick Crayton. And he's going to be dumped into the market-place? People say, well yeah, he's pretty out-spoken. Yeah, that's true. We have no history of keeping out-spoken wide-receivers on this team at all! And saying that their production keeps them here.
Norm: If Patrick Crayton were a bum, he'd be welcome to leave. He is not a bum! He's a good, hard-working receiver whom I believe should be kept on the roster.
Staff: Doesn't the production have to be pretty high though to deal with any lockeroom turbulence or turmoil if that's what he's causing?
Norm: You've been in there a lot, is Patrick Crayton truly causing turbulence?
Staff: It doesn't seem like it, but the word is that he was part of the old poking T.O. with a stick back in the day - part of that uprising / split lockeroom - that sort of thing. Anyway, that's what I've heard. And he might be the last vestige of that and that's what that final cut is about.
Norm: It's all over! I'm not saying this to you Mike. But I'm just saying, if there is anything like that....You are trying to win a SuperBowl. That is the number 1 goal of the season! Is he a disturbing player? NO!! No, he's not a disturbing player!!
Staff: I don't know if we know that??! How do you know he's not a disturbing player in the eyes of Jason Garrett?
Norm: Well, okay, I'm going to assume that. You're right. I'm making assumptions here that may not be true. On the other hand, we may have to assume that about some other players. And I don't think there's a lot of that in evidence here. Crayton goes out and seems to have a good rapport with Romo - plays hard all the time - makes catches - and is more productive than other members who rate above him on the depth chart!
Norm: I'm just going for the question - Aren't we going for a SuperBowl here!! Did I miss the fact that that's now moved behind money!?! in the goal?!? Have I missed that! Is it logical to dump Patrick Crayton!! - is my question to you. I don't think it is. I don't think it is! But apparently that's very close to happening.
Norm: Jacques Taylor told us that yesterday. Other articles came out yesterday suggesting that. And now I get more information from talking to my people - a contact I have - There are loads of signs pointing to Patrick Crayton going away. I just don't understand why?!? I don't understand why? I don't expect - at all - the club to give us an explanation - if and when this happens. But I just don't know why it may be about to happen?
Staff: Where do the chips fall if it does happen? If tomorrow, either a trade or a cut happens. What is the domino effect as far as the wide-receiver depth chart?
Norm: Ogletree moves to 4. If you're not going to keep Patrick Crayton, can you keep Sam Hurd? I mean, doesn't the same criteria apply to Hurd? You'd dump your 4th making 2 million but you'd keep your 5th making 1.8 million. That doesn't seem to make much sense.
Norm: I see David Moore did a very nice piece in the Dallas Morning News - on Crayton or Hurd. But is it Crayton AND Hurd that are going away! Because Jesse Holley - bless his soul - he's a pretty good special teams player.
Staff: Who's the punt returner if Crayton's gone? Dez?
Norm: Dez and McCann. And the Cowboys are apparently comfortable with that. I, myself, put me in the camp of 'I need some more explanation here' - because this one doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
(Norm made mention - before this segment - that a source had confirmed to him that the pro-shops were told to stop ordering new Crayton gear.)
