Not Crazy About Daks Footwork

I see Dak standing flat footed in the pocket far too often with too much weight in his heels. I've coached youth QBs who tell me they don't like to chop their feet they say they believe it throws off their timing. If they don't like to chop I teach them to keep weight over balls of feet n bounce slightly with slight knee bend heels come up off of turf only slightly toes may or may not come up I don't have a preference. It's the weight over balls of feet that's important Looks like coaching staff have him working on this exact tech I've noticed him doing this at times the last two games but he still reverts back but he's clearly working on it. Looks like when he does proper tech his accuracy improves but falters when he gets flat again. This usually occurs when youth QB coaches over emphasize standing tall in pocket. Your tall enough Dak.

I agree with this. He needs to refine his mechanics.

I understand he's a rookie, but when you have a pocket like that, that form is unacceptable

Yeah I've noticed that's when he's most likely to get flat and too straight legged when he has a very clean pocket and 1st n 2nd read isn't there. He needs drop backs to help his rythum. He's climbing the pocket better. At least he has better footwork than Cam Newton why is it always the most athletic guys that seem to struggle so much with footwork prob because they have the arm to get away with it. Cam has struggled with his accuracy because he throws off the back foot far to often opens his hips to far left causes him to miss throws over middle n right too high they sale on him. So much talent but poor attention to detail. He would hate me if I was coaching him. Way too much potential to be so lackadaisical. If I was a DC against Newton I would never left him throw to the left.

lol. I like just about everything I have seen Elliott do so far...after the first 2 games. This boy has gotten better and stronger with each passing game!

It's going to take time. And this is one of the reasons why I don't like starting rookie QB's right away....they usually have throwing mechanics issues. When they practice it, he's a young enough guy to get it down in practice quickly because he has greater neuroplasticity. But, the issue becomes when you start moving into a game there are new additions to the environment and combine that with the speed of the game, the brain tells you to revert back to old mechanics because it's more of a survival mode.

Dak didn't throw it well in the first half of the Niners game either. But if you watch both the 2nd half of the Niners and Packers games, you see that his mechanics were much better than in the first half and he started making excellent throws.

Also, his motion is much improved from his college days and he really hasn't lost that this year. I tend to look more towards the motion than the footwork because IMO, QB's that can't fix the motion in a year or two, never fix the motion. QB's that work on footwork and have a coaching staff that stresses the footwork, tend to get it over time regardless of when they are in their career. Hell, if Jay Cutler can learn better footwork anybody can, especially Dak.

Mechanically, Dak has plenty of room to improve. And he's the first to acknowledge it. It's great news for Cowboys fans, because he's already playing the position at a high level. In a year or three, he's likely to be one of the best active QBs in the game.

I agree that he has a lot of room to improve. But, he already is one of the best QBs in the game. He is much better right now than Romo ever was. It is time to embrace this future and unite around it as fans.

Personally I don't think his footwork for the most part is bad. The kid is in year 1 playing under center, his drop back looks smooth and vast majority of the time he is stepping into the throws. Sure there will be times he may be a bit flat footed and even times he throws off his back foot but then so do all the other QB's. When he rolls he has been good about squaring his shoulders and making the throw.

It's embarrassing to watch. I caught myself denying I'm a Cowboys fan recently to a friend from the past. Told him he must have been thinking of somebody else.
