Not feeling the DEs in this draft

Can someone tell me I'm wrong. I think this draft is loaded at DT and Dallas has a chance to shore up the middle of the defense. I do not feel the same way about the DE position. I don't really see an edge rusher that is capable of altering a game. Kony Ealy is only the 2nd best DE by default but I feel like Martin and Clarke will have similar production and can be had much later in the draft. The smaller DEs are not overly fast or display a strong burst. They are just undersized. Martin and Clarke are now my favorite DEs in this draft but I wouldn't take Martin until the 3rd and Clarke in the 4th. Ealy is not deserving of the 16th pick and should only be targeted with a massive trade down.

I see where you are coming from, but I think we still need to make the proper investments now. If we can get Dominique Easley in the 2nd round I think that would be a great pick up. I think we can also get Jeffcoat in the 4th round.

Wouldn't be made if we got

1st - Jernigan/Donald
2nd - Easley
4th - Jeffcoat

I don't love the DE's.

Clowney: Like RS12 said, neck down. Who knows what you get between the ears and that is a huge part of a player's game. Top 10 would scare me with him.

Mack: I love this guy, but he'll be long gone and will be a better 34 OLB than 43 DE. I would take him anywhere in round 1.

Barr: Unsure. Maybe he could turn into a good 43 DE but I'm not sure. Good physical traits but I'm not sold on him for this defense. I guess I would take him at 16 but I would worry about his toughness.

Dee Ford: I like him but he is small. Strong for his size though and will definitely get after the QB. I would take him late in round 1 if we could.

Crichton: I like this guy a whole lot. Prototypical 43 DE and I love the way he plays. Tough and strong. Anywhere in round 2 and I'm thrilled to get him. Even in the late first if we trade back, I would be fine with him. I like him over some of the guys above him.

There are some player here, but not a lot of them that I'd like for the Cowboys.

16th pick
Anthony Barr

Trade back in the 1st
Kony Ealy
Dee Ford

2nd or 3rd round

Scott Chrichton
Trent Murphy
Kareem Martin
Marcus Smith
Chris Smith

5th round
Brent Gardner

7th Round
Zach Moore
Larry Webster
Ethan Westbrooks

Its definitely not the greatest draft for DE, but I like all of those guys. If Barr is there you take him. I would take either Ealy or Ford in a trade down, if not you can grab any of the next 5 in the 2nd or 3rd as weakside pass rushers. Gardner would make a great strong side rotation player and could even kick inside on passing plays. And then Moore, Webster, and Westbrooks all look to be good projects to develop in the 7th. If we were to follow a game plan like that I'd feel pretty decent about the situation going into the season

Yeah it is a shaky draft for I believe DE and also QB in the first round, a lot of questions, including Clowney. I do have some hope because there were legitimate questions on even a guy like Robert Quinn and how he would translate to the NFL. But yeah there seems to be a lack of the truly "explosive" DEs in this draft and the few that are i.e. Barr are lacking in skills, size and strength. I see a lot of Bruce Irvin "light" type guys in this draft which I believe are strictly rotational passrushers.

I understand what you're saying.

There's not that 1 guy that seems like the perfect fit and not a lot of freakish upside guys.

Barr is a terrific physical specimen but needs development.

The one late round guy with super high upside if he can get his mind right is Aaron Lynch.

Fisher has the best "inside" info on the Cowboys, IMO. Better than the Cowboys' own media guys.

Yeah he was on that Melton from the start to the finish. When people are saying he left so its over fisher was saying the complete opposite. And said Melton was out of VR with dallas coaches

I don't see us going DE in round 1 unless we trade back. No value at 16

not a fan of ford, too small IMO

Give me one of the DTs (donald/jernigan) in rd 1 after trade back and 2 of the rd 2/3 guys in your list and i will be happy

The DE are really tough to figure out this year. The only one i'm really sold on is Crichton, but he is a second round guy who will probably go late first. I like Jeffcoat a ton as well, but your gonna have to take him in the second if you want him IMO. I would be thrilled to get him in the third. A couple guys that i'm really starting to take a hard look at is Attaochu and Tuitt. I've really started to warm up to the idea of snagging Attaochu in the middle rounds if we can. This kid has really got some talent.

Demarcus Ware isn't in this draft, but if we were playing a 4-3 would we have been comfortable taking Ware at 11? This draft has some tweeners that we might just draft to rush the passer and have to deal with their liabilities.

I like Jeffcoat as well. Not just because he is from Texas either. If you watch Jeffcoat from 2011, a lot more explosion and quickness IMO. 2013, after coming back from injury, not as much explosion but much better production in his Sr. year. If you look at his numbers, he is probably the most athletic DE of all the DEs not named Clowney. He could very well be a guy who you see regain that explosion two years removed from his Knee Injury. I think he's a really interesting prospect.

Did you see what Byndom posted at the Texas Pro Day?
