1. Resign Dez long term. It's going to happen anyways so might as well just get it done.
2. Franchise Murray. The more I think about it the better this option sounds. He has not proven he could stay healthy outside of this last season (contract year) and no matter what those who defend him say, he did slow down a little at the end. He will be 28 after the season and I love this option which allows number 3.
3. Take Gurley or Gordon in the first round. I would love to see one of these young backs that have the burst to hit the open hole faster and break tackles in the open field. Dream come true for the Cowboys.

If they franchise Murray, the good faith they have grown in the past couple years is gone. That would be beyond stupid.

That would be the best scenario for the offense for sure. Not sure that is fair for Demarco but would be great for the offense. You would have to figure it would hamstring our ability to fill needs defensively. Only in the NFL does handing a guy 8 mil for a season seem like you are taking advantage of him.

Also, maybe they pull back the franchise offer from DeMarco once they draft the RB in the first, provided he doesn't sign it, which is very possible.

The tag is about 10M for Murray. The reported offer to Murray was 4 years, 16M. They wanted to pay 16M for 4 years but the tag would have them paying 10M for 1 year.

Dez yes. I woukd rather transition tag Murray. No to a RB I the 1st. Gurley scares me. He can't stay in the field. Gordon is a outside the pocket running back. Needs to be in space. Not the type of RB we need here.

I can find a RB in the 2nd-4th

So we radically need help defense and our response is to double up on a huge expenditure at RB?
I see three better options:

1) sign Murray and use that 1st rounder on another position OR
2) take a stud RB in RD1 and certainly not sign Murray Or
3) do neither. Instead use the huge dollars saved not signing Murray PLUS the huge 1st round asset on defense. Then still, in this deep RB class, get a very good RB in Rd 3 or so to pair with what we have.

I would take any of those three.
The last scenario I wouldn't take would be burn our 1st rounder on RB, then still sign Murray.
Talk about double dipping

I hope not, I am not opposed to bringing Murray back... I am not opposed to drafting Gurley (or Gordon) but both... no thanks. I think our best bet would be to let Murray go, and sign some big name FAs on the defensive side of the ball. Considering how many good 1-techs and DEs there are available I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to sign one of each then have a really good d-line for next year.

I can't see any way that the Cowboys franchise or transition Murray. It's just too expensive. I don't have this year's numbers, but last year it would have been 9.5 million to franchise a RB and 8 million to transition him. I'd expect it to be at least that much again this year.

I just can't imagine that the Cowboys would throw that much money at Murray (considering their 4 year/16 million offer) and also spend the first round draft pick on the same position. They got Murray in the third round, and Jerry is on record saying he thinks Randle could get 1400(?) yards behind this OL. That doesn't sound like a position you throw 8+ million dollars and a first round pick at.

He did slow down when defenses lined up to stop the run with Free out and Parnell in (who was terrible at run blocking). I think it was more with that and his broken finger that made him hesitate in some of his runs.

If Dez gets a done then I could see Dallas using the franchise tag on Murray to buy more time to come to an agreement on a contract at which point the tag can be removed. Feb 16 is when teams can place a tag on a player. As for Gurley and Gordon, I just do not see Dallas taking either one. If Cowboys do not have the defensive player they are wanting at 27 I would expect to trade out of the 1st rd.

Franchising LB Spencer was a total waste of money. Franchising RB Murrray would be a bigger waste. Murray's max offers would probably be around $5M/yr from some team desperate to sell tickets like Jax or Oakland.

The running success was because of the OL. Phillip Tanner would have had over 1000 yds behind this line. Sorry. Murray has a take-it-or-leave-it offer of 4 years and $16M.

Pretty good start

If you tag Murray
Draft Gurley
And sign Peterson

I'd say that's a good foundation at RB

Our top 5 rbs would be almost as good as our top 5 OL

Virtually no chance of franchising Murray.

To commit $10 mil to the guy for next season would be beyond stoopid.

1. Yes

2. No

3. No, but IF the defensive player is not there at #27, and Murray is gone, and either Gurley or Gordon are there, I could see them taking one. You have to because Dallas is a team that is going to depend on the run, first and foremost, and you will need a stable of RB's to handle the load. Either one could contribute immediately. You can't go back to laying it all on Romo's shoulders.
