- Seventeen players from last season’s squad and one former player will participate in Monday’s Houston Pro Day at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Cornerback D.J. Hayden, who suffered a near-fatal injury last November, will work out for NFL scouts for the first time. Hayden interviewed with teams at last month’s NFL combine in Indianapolis.
02/20/13 - 2013 NFL Combine, Medical watch: Of all the medical testing that will take place in Indianapolis for this year's NFL prospects, the most critical grade will be the one teams receive on Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden. Hayden's senior season was cut short after he suffered a life-threatening tear of the inferior vena cava in the heart (the vein which supplies blood to the lower half of the body) from a collision in practice.Despite only playing nine games, Hayden was named a First Team All-Conference USA pick and was highly regarded among scouts. If given a clean bill of health, the 6-0, 190-pound Hayden could earn second-round consideration. Should team doctors red-flag the injury, however, he could be taken off some teams' boards altogether. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
12/13/12 - 2012 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB-D.J. Hayden, Sr., Houston, has been selected First Team All-Conference USA (Coaches selection) for the 2012 college football season. Hayden was second in the league with four interceptions despite only playing nine games after suffering a life-threatening tear of the inferior vena cava in the heart from a collision in practice. The defensive captain returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns, both returns over 75 yards.Prior to his injury, just 45 of 362 pass attempts (12.4%) from UH opponents went Hayden's way. Of the 45, just 11 were completed, representing just 5% of the 216 completions from UH opponents with Hayden in the lineup. The senior also had eight pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. - Houston football
11/12/12 - A University of Houston defensive back left a hospital Monday, six days after a hit in practice tore a major vein that feeds his heart and left him in critical condition. The school said cornerback D.J. Hayden was discharged from Memorial Hermann-Texas Trauma Institute in Houston. Hayden and his family won't be available for comment immediately, UH athletics spokesman David Bassity said. The senior was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital after the collision last Tuesday. Hayden was rushed into immediate surgery for a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart. The injury is 95 percent fatal in the field and is most commonly associated with high-speed motor vehicle injuries, team physician Dr. Walter Lowe said. ''Looking at the whole course of events and the severity of the injury, D.J. has progressed remarkably well and is out a lot sooner than expected,'' Lowe said. ''He's got a lot of healing left to do as the procedure to repair the inferior vena cava is much like a heart transplant,'' Lowe said. ''The sternum should take around three months to heal, and D.J. is expected to be able to resume normal activities without contact in three to four months.'' Hayden was tied for the Conference USA lead with four interceptions and had returns for touchdowns in consecutive games against SMU and UTEP earlier this season. He was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 29 after picking off two passes in the 45-35 victory over the Miners. - AP Sports 11/09/12 - Houston football player D.J. Hayden was transported by ambulance from the University of Houston football practice facility to Memorial Hermann Hospital on Tuesday afternoon for evaluation of an injury sustained from a collision in practice. Walter Lowe, M.D., University of Houston Head Team Physician, confirmed Thursday that Hayden required immediate surgery for a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body back to the heart. Lowe described the injury as very serious and life threatening while commending the coordinated response from the University of Houston Athletics Training Staff, EMS paramedics and the trauma staff at Memorial Hermann. Hayden is currently alert and in stable yet critical condition in Memorial Hermann ICU unit. The University of Houston Athletics Department will release further updates on Hayden as they become available. Statement from Walter Lowe, M.D., University of Houston Head Team Physician "This injury has never been seen or reported in association with a football injury and is more associated with high speed motor vehicle injuries. The type of injury D.J. had is 95 percent fatal in the field and we are all very thankful for the coordinate response from the University of Houston trainers, EMS paramedics, the trauma team at Memorial Hermann and operating surgeon Dr. John Holcomb." - Houston football

Hmmmm very interesting.

Wonder who that DT would be? Gotta be Richardson, right?

Let me ask you this, is there anybody but the blindest of homers and the FO that thought this team was one player away last year? The team has changed schemes on defense cant sign sign FA's, has all kinds of gaping holes, so this fits right in with par for the course doesnt it?

I am hoping sanity will prevail,we should be trading back into the 20s if the top 5 OL are gone and pick up another 3rd pick.

I understand everybody's desire to get a good offensive lineman. But why are so many fans stuck on the idea that has to be done in the first round? There's good quality in round 2 and possibly round 3.

I agree we need olinemen, but I get the feeling too many of us are putting on blinders and ignoring alternate ways to get these linemen

I think it was IDigit who used the term "gun shy" about trading down, well for Olineman it is the same concept most are "gun shy" about taking an Olineman outside of the first because it has pretty much worked only 2 times the last 15 years.

Oh I agree with your point though it can be done especially in a draft like this.

D.J. Hayden - DB - Cougars
Houston CB D.J. Hayden ran forty times of 4.34 and 4.37 seconds at the school's pro day on Monday.
If this is your first introduction to Hayden, be sure to check out some of his games. The Houston corner's closing burst is excellent and he consistently finds the football to disrupt at the catch point. Sure, there was a freak heart issue that nearly ended Hayden's life, but we hope he earns a clean bill of health.

Aaron Dobson - WR - Thundering Herd
Marshall WR Aaron Dobson recorded a 4.42 and 4.44 forty at the school's pro day.
The Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles were in attendance. Dobson recorded a 4.29 in the short shuttle and ran the three-cone drill in 7.2 seconds. He also put up the bar 16 bench press reps. The wideout made some highlight reel catches and should be a third day selection.

Phillip Thomas - DB - Bulldogs
Former NFL Scout Daniel Jeremiah considers Fresno State S Phillip Thomas a late second or early third-round prospect.
Thomas "has some fly-by missed tackles but outstanding ball skills," Jeremiah tweeted. The poor tackling is a big part of Thomas' game, since he takes good angles towards ball carriers but tends to slow and whiff once close enough. That lunging or lack of quick twitch movement could really hurt Thomas in the NFL, but expect him to play a center field type role.

Don't agree with him on Thomas. Guy has SOME issues with tackling I guess, but he lead his team in tackling this year. I guess being exposed to the offense due to bad front 7 play, tends to result in more mishaps than usual.
I'm just an avid Bulldog fan. IF it is something that is bad, although I think it's not as bad as folks have made it out to be, it can definitely be coached out. Thomas in the 3rd is a steal IMO.

For me, I don't think that they must get an OLineman in the 1st; however, I expect this draft to line up such that OL has a high probability of being the best pick at #18 for the Cowboys.

I think that the top tier of DL are gone by #18 and that they would be over-paying for any of the Safeties at this pick.

Very high probability of being gone before #18:
DE Ezekiel Ansah
DE Barkevious Mingo
DT Star Lotulelei
DT Sharrif Floyd
DT Sheldon Richardson

Possible DL options at #18:
DE Bjoern Werner
If he falls this far, then teams don't believe that he has the elite speed to play Weak-Side DE. If teams see him as a Strong-Side DE, then players like Datone Jones have better size without giving up much if anything in terms of speed.

DT Sylvester Williams
The 18th pick "feels" a little early for this player; however, he does have very good speed/quickness for his size and could play either the 1-tech or 3-tech.

Le'Veon Bell - RB - Spartans
National Football Post's Russ Lande writes Michigan State RB Le'Veon Bell could go in the second- to-third round.
Lande's report seems to be consistent with what's been reported as of late. Most recently, NFL.com's Gil Brandt said Bell could be picked "at the top of the second-round." He compared Bell to Chuck Muncie, a running back in the 1980s.

:lmao:

I actually think that's a pretty good comparison.

I think Bell will be a nice player but Chuck Muncie was one of the most gifted FOOTBALL players I ever saw. Think Dickerson's speed and glide, then add more power plus the recieving skills of a TE. The best part was he made it look effortless. Gil really sounding ridiculous on this comparison.

Augh....... no. Muncie was never that fast and he was not nearly as fluid as Dickerson. Muncie had decent feet for a big man, he could get you a decent tough yard and he could catch the football but he was not an Eric Dickerson IMO.

We have to agree to disagree, and I go back to seeing him in college dominate a USC defense with McKays players. He was gifted and threw away a HOF career IMO. I dont see those abilities in Bell.

Most teams have FSU OT Watson in first round
National Football Post's Russ Lande writes that most teams have Florida State OT Menelik Watson in the first round.
"Thickly built and possessing rare natural strength, Watson is still raw when it comes to technique and consistency, but his uncommon athleticism/feet for such a big man has vaulted him into the first round on most team’s draft boards," Lande wrote. "If he impresses in the positional drills and when he meets with teams over the next month, we have heard he could climb even higher and force himself into the top fifteen picks of the first round."
