FRISCO, Texas – Randy Gregory is excited to be back in the playoffs and preparing to test his pass rush skills against one of the NFL's best: 49ers left tackle Trent Williams, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection.

An elbow injury kept Williams out of the 49ers' postseason-clinching win over the Rams last Sunday, but the veteran tackle was back on the practice field for San Francisco on Thursday, a sign that he might be progressing toward a return Sunday against the Cowboys.

Gregory has lined up against Williams in the past when Williams played for division rival Washington.

"I've played against him a bunch. He always brings the best out of me," Gregory said. "I definitely think he's up there as far as being one of the best tackles in the game. I have to bring my A-game, physicality and all, and I'm up for the challenge. I'm excited for it. Time will tell as far as who's going to come on top in that game."

Colton McKivitz started at left tackle for San Francisco against the Rams and might be the 49ers' top backup option again Sunday if Williams can't play.

Gregory, D-Law and Parsons are one helluva a match-up problem. Throw in Diggs, A Brown, J-Lew, Kearse and Wolfhunter and it at different element. A nightmare is brewing and 49ers will be living in it come Sunday.

Go Dallas!!!

Pass rush for Gregory is (obviously) important in this game, by not nearly as important as Gregory not getting caved in on running play OR in general take himself out of plays by not being disiplined and not just rushing upfield every play.

I personally think Trent can neutralize Gregory. RG is a speed rusher that rarely contributes in run stopping. However, we can take advantage of RG taking Trent wide out to stunt behind Trent on pass and run plays. Unfortunately, LVE is the player that usually fills this role. Sometimes a safety will blitz behind this to sack the qb. But I'd hate for Kittle to escape out for a big gainer. If only we had 2 good Lbs......

Couldn't agree more. Gregory's best work has often come on stunts where he abuses the interior of the line. My fear is that he gets washed out on outside zone. I think they target him and LVE in this game as run defense weaknesses.

I like that he plans on bringing his A- game. Always leave something in reserve.

The great thing is Randy has plenty of reps vs Trent, so he will be comfortable with the match-up. I'm more concerned about DA because he always get fooled on any misdirection.

sweep the arm!!!!
