#92 - Stephen Paea

Stephen Paea has been brought up as a candidate to come in and play the 1-tech position for us. I've already seen the Dallas film so I watched three more games: San Fran, NY Jets, and Detroit.
I saw a guy who has a good to great burst off the line, solid snap anticipation, plays with power, and shows some athleticism. He played a lot of snaps at the 1-tech but also played a lot of snaps at the 3-tech. He can penetrate from either position which is what Marinelli wants from his rushmen, versatility.

His performance against Detroit was particularly impressive when you compare his stats to our interior against the same offensive line a couple of weeks later. Paea played 48 snaps and had 3 QB hits and 3 hurries. Hayden, Crawford, T.McClain, and Brent played a combine 135 snaps and had 0 QB hits and 4 hurries.

Paea would be a huge upgrade over Hayden. He does everything Hayden can do but better and has pass rush abilities. The knock on Paea is his health. 2014 was the first season he played all 16 games. Chicago is going to more of a 3-4 defense and I've read people aren't expecting him to stick around. If Dallas is interested and can sign him at the right price, which is key, I think he would pay immediate dividends.

Anyways, here are some plays so you can judge for yourself:

He seems fairly quick for how big and lumbering he is. Funny how off balance he is.

Decent and solid signing, though he doesn't handle the double team well, still a much needed big body type in the middle of the DL.

Was a good interior rusher in the 4-3. Was a very good anchor VS the run. In a platoon with Thornton, he could be very productive

Decent signing IMO

The real question is why does it take our FO and coaching staff years to come to the basic realization that you need a good 1T DT to field a good defense?

The d-line simply needs some bodies with J. Crawford and McClain out of the rotation. Paea serves that function.
