IRVING, Texas –
Guard Brian Waters took first-team reps at the beginning of Wednesday’s practice and appears ready to start and maintain a more permanent role at right guard.

The Cowboys have utilized a rotation system with Waters and Mackenzy Bernadeau, as Waters gets back in shape after a year off from football. The Cowboys have let Waters ease back in at guard until he’s prepared for a full workload.

“That’s the goal – to try and make it through a whole game,” Waters said. “We’ll see. Obviously, Mack will be ready to go. We’re all confident he’ll be ready to go if anything happens. We’ll see how it goes.

”Waters said he’s getting better physically and with the scheme each week. When he went to the Patriots immediately before the season began two years ago, he had at least had a little more familiarity with the system.

“I had just worked with Charlie Weis the year before,” Waters said. “It was easier to transition with the system. Here, I’ve had to learn a lot more. Lucky for me, I play offensive line, so there aren’t a lot of differences, just the calls and somewhat the plays.”

Also some blurbs about Wilcox and the new CB Greenwood. About time they picked that CB up.

churnover, tweaking the roster, constantly looking for upgrades...who are these 2013 Dallas Cowboys?

I just get a feeling that Wilcox is going to be the difference maker in our secondary.

That would be great if Wilcox works out. It would be "another" difference maker. Dallas already has one in Barry Church. Who , I like more every week. I do like Wilcox as well. Waters being able to start is awesome. Helps out Romo and that line. Let's hope they can do some damage and get consistent on all sides of the ball.

With his attitude and desire to get better, I have a feeling you will be right, though Church isn't so bad either.

J.J. Wilcox appeared to have played about as well as any rookie could in his first start Sunday against the Rams, but he’s not yet satisfied.

He said there were multiple minor mistakes he made and that he still has a lot of room to grow. The rookie came in Tuesday on the team’s day off to try to learn from those mistakes.

“Nothing major,” he said. “I’m hard on myself. I want the coaches to grade me hard, too. That’s how I attack it, and that’s how I try to get better.”

I love me some Wilcox. This is why Character matters when getting players. No doubt you need talent but how many of us have seen wasted talent by knuckleheads. I think Garrett and the scouting department have done a great job is looking for these type of players

Wilcox and Church - the safety tandem for many years to come.

They look promising. This week will be a good challenge for both. Rivers is pretty good on 3rd down conversions - need to get our defense off the field.

He also has some very good WR and TE who can make the tough catch. I agree it is a challenge for this team. I look forward to see it.

I think we'll still see some growing pains for Wilcox to dampen some of the enthusiasm but it appears he's going to be a player. Church still needs seasoning as well although he's way down the road compared to Wilcox. I think eventually we'll see one or both of those guys in the Pro Bowl at some point. I'm hoping at least one does it on a consistent basis.

If we keep up the pressure up front then hopefully those guys will have a chance to make more plays and less mistakes. I really hate we lost both Crawford and Spencer this year but they gave us the opportunity to find some other players. It's been nice having Selvie and to a lesser extent Wilbur step up. Maybe we'll find another guy this year to help out.

I love hearing about that work ethic and willingness to put in the time and effort to improve.
