FA just started...

Grow up??..that poster has a very good point. Do you realize that right now we have no RG/RT from last year. How are you going to run an offense with a 35 yr old RG that has had two operations on his back in two years and a RT who has not taken a snap in the NFL?:bang2:

1) Everyone is ready to write of Rivera. He hasn't played well, but he hasn't retired quite yet. So it isn't as if we have nothing there.

2) We are still in the market for Colombo. It isn't guaranteed that we've lost him yet.

how pissed will we all be if we start the season with a line of "Adams Kosier Gurode Procter McQuiston" .... ah sorry to even say it..

Go and read recent quotes from Jerry Jones, Jeff Ireland and Stephen Jones.

They don't sound awfully confident.

And if his play last year didn't show you what is painfully evident, I have nothing else to say.

It is very unfortunate that he now has leverage. We weren't able to lock him down, so it makes me wonder what we offered to begin with.

Ok, let's look at our past.

Historically, when we make a run in FA, we hit early and big.

The times we've drug our feet and waited for the market to settle, well...we didn't come away with much.

It seems JJ goes in cycles...some years he's gung-ho....other years it seems he thinks to much.

I'm thinking his instincts are off....he doesn't hit on FAs much anymore.

I haven't expected the Cowboys to do a lot in FA this year because I got the impression Jones wasn't very interested in being very active and throwing a lot of cash around, but I could be wrong. Either way, I'm not expecting any Shock and Awe show here.

Agreed...It sounded, per Stephen and Jerry in various interviews, that they either want to cut him or would prefer to have him, Rivera, retire.

I have said the same regarding rivera since the start - I'd like to replace him, but going out and getting a steinbach or dielman isn't going to make us an automatic super bowl contender. I think we sign someone, but not a big name. We might have offered Davis a contract and now he'll go around and get other offers. But he isn't good enough to get anything like Steinbach, Dielman or Dockery got. He's 3 years removed from the position, and I don't think he was dominant there anyway.

Finally, regarding Colombo, if we don't re-sign him, I'll be concerned. But at this point, I get the feeling that we are just trying to get a market price for him.

In regards to the spirit of this thread - there was nothing in free agency that was going to make us an extraordinarily better team. I am thrilled that we have decided to stay quiet in it.

Then it would be me hope that Davis wasn't their only contingency plan, otherwise they aren't worthy of their positions.

You know I was thinking they were bringing in Davis as a RG...but other rumors said it was in case they could not get Colombo signed.

I would not mind Davis as a RG...he would scare me as a RT.

As far as contingency plans...who knows. We have seen them wanting to get a player before only to not get them and settle on others. Wiley and Vanderjact come to mind.

If Davis was here as a RT I would have been disgusted. RG I was prepared to swallow, but no way at RT.

I still think there is a better than good chance Colombo remains here, we just have to get a price for him.

Regarding RG - my point is that we just need to get something steady there that isn't going to whiff on his man all the time. We don't need significant upgrade, just someone who will play better. Bad as RG was, it isn't as if that was the one position that kept us out of position. It mgiht be our biggest position on the OL, but I don't feel as though we have to significantly get better there to go far. That depends on our coaches.

Regardless of what we do, I hope that our draft involves some offensive players. I'm tired of an offense built off free agency.

I actually thought Colombo was going to be a given and would never see FA so I was really not all that worried about RG...I figured we might draft a guy, get a no name guy off some team or give proctor a shot.

I am still not ruling out Colombo and davis to be honest...most of my talks have been IF we do not sign them, in our current situation, we are hurting.

So far I think I have only heard/read one team setting up an appointment with Colombo..while davis has three at least.

I think Davis is probably just trying to raise up the price to see if any other team can change his mind about playing with the cowboys. I think he does want to be here but just wants to see what he can get first.

^^^Agree with all of that. I still think Colombo stays here...if we lose him, then I will move to defcon 4. As far as Davis, I would have offered him more than Gurode got, but not a lot, and said take it or leave it. If we get Colombo and then a call back from Davis saying "Hey, this cat Snyder says he can give me 1 mil more per year than you can, but I really wanna be in Dallas, so I'll just take 500k more per year," it's my hope Jerry says 'We'll see you next season when we beat you!'

Good post BP and that was what i said in the begining of the thread, and i have said in other threads is I think Columbo was solid, and will probably improve next year as his legs get stronger. It stinks because i thought that wouldve been a great FA signing. Davis would be cool as a guard, but not for that loot.

This stinks...the one guy we targeted is out(with good reason, That signing bonus is just too much), but i just thought wed get something done. I dont mean sign 5 guys...but someone. Id be happy with columbo....

I am happy, hope it stays this way. The only thing I hope happens is columbo ends up signing some time this week and we find a vet qb.

then back to work on the draft.

I just wish that JJ could have done the following and it might have worked out a little better at this stage of FA:

1. Resign Columbo before FA began even if his contract was a little higher then expected. Just so it wasn't Gurode high, JJ would have been fine looking at what OL are getting signed for now.

2. Come out the gate and offer something to Davis before any team does and try to get him signed before a bidding war. Sounds like he tried to do this, but too many teams called and got his agent raising the anty.

3. Resign Gramatica right after the game at the end of the season. He was excited, happy to have a job...and probably more willing to sign something reasonable.

4. Same as #3 but for Romo.

5. Same as #3 for Columbo.
