Nothing's guaranteed for Jonathan Mingo, could be competing for roster spot in 2025

To be fair with Mingo he was traded during mid-season and had Rush as QB. It's possible that with going through TC and having a healthy Dak we could see him at his full potential.
Not saying he going to just turn it around from last year, but I do think it would be a good idea to give him that opportunity before throwing away the keys
For sure we need to give him an opportunity in camp, and honestly he probably has the inside track, but he needs to show up.

The issue I always have with the QB excuse is that other guys played with those same bad QBs both in Dallas and Carolina, but Mingo was maybe the worst performing WR on each roster which makes it more than fair to be skeptical of the player.

I'm skeptical to go that far just because of his measurables, but I can't really say that you're wrong either. Based on the tape alone I don't think Mingo plays as big or as fast as he is listed. He has to show something early in camp this year IMO....Going into year 3 you cant still live off the potential label.
He's technically going into year one with the Cowboys and he will get a full year here he will not have to ball out to make the roster keep receipts we're trying to tell you they're going to give him a full year to do something if he still looks like this he probably doesn't make the team next year.. But his spot is all but guaranteed this year it is it just is i'm sorry that's the way it is you pick up a player mid season and he has to play with all that garbage last year and he needs to go in and learn a new offense this year he will get a full season before they make that kind of decision you like it or not it doesn't matter and the fact is we're all crazy for being in here talking about low hanging fruit I like who's going to be the fist 6th 7th or 8th wide receiver is insane it doesn't matter right now..

I just want to make it clear this was about whether he has to make the team or not for 2025 and we're trying to tell you he's on the team unless he does something so ridiculous like throws a jersey and a cut and a coach's face or spits on somebody or gets in trouble off the field outside of that he's making this team...

And I understand why he's a 4th round pick that didn't really get a chance last year this is his real first year with the Cowboys and he will get a full year to show something

To be fair with the QB situation Rush was mainly targeting CeeDee and Ferguson.

You would have to have a screw loose to believe any of that.
right, Mazi is.. I know it's slightly different but there's a first round pick that hasn't really improved that much and he's still here and they think they're not going to give this guy at least one full season after you traded a 4th round of for him yes he will get one full season to prove himself to be something anything even to try to be Noah Brown like they're looking for signs and they're going to give him all the opportunities he needs this year to try it....

This guy has been in the NFL awhile now, we know what he is.
2 years is all. Season and a half that was on the worst team in the league and half a season on a badly coordinated offense and backup QB. We have no clue what he is. After all the OTA's, training camp and preseason games we should have a pretty good idea.

Our bottom WRs are not better than Mingo. It's ridiculous to think any of them are besides the top 3 and it's unknown between Mingo and Tolbert. This is just common sense, you either have it or you don't.
Why? What has Mingo done at the NFL level to show he is better than the rest of these guys?

His .62 Yards per route were 111th out of 112 eligible players. Hes only .72 for his career which also would have been 111th in the NFL last year.

As far as snaps go he was pretty on par with Brooks and Flournoy since he came to Dallas last year so he certainly didnt show the coaching staff that he was outperforming the lower on the roster guys.

I get there is potential there based on his measurables, but he is yet to show it on the field.

Mingo to me is a Deebo Samuel type player.

He is not a typical plug and play in any system receiver. He needs a certain scheme and plays to be successful.

He’s never going to be Lamb running in the slot and making defenders miss. He’s not burning by anybody with Turpins speed.

But if you watch his film in college, he has a knack for the big play. But it’s more in the screens, reverses etc. Same with Parris Campbell

J.S. Mill said something like you cannot derive and ought from an is.

Given we spent a 4th on Mingo, and he was drafted in the 2nd, he ought to be better.

The only problem is he isn't.

Whoever makes the roster should be whoever is the best player, not whoever ought to be the best player.

If you add up everything you have invested in the other 8 or so players, you'd be wasting the capital you spent there. It's not just the 4th round pick at play, it's everything you have invested in the other players as well even if many are cast offs and UDFAs.

You have that many roster spots up, putting a sub par player on the roster is a disservice to them and devalued all the work and investment you have in them.

This should be a wide open competition. That's part of why the discussion is interesting. To me, at least.

That, and I think we have really good competition for these guys lower on the roster. Like ChocolateLab, I think it was, said it will come down to special teams.

My bad thought it was his 4th year, I will give him one more year. Carolina sure gave up on him quick and not like they were stacked at WR.

Like others say, may the best win the job, not because we traded a 4th for him and Jerry doesn’t want to look bad.

Broaddus said the Cowboys coaches and front office love Mingo. They really believe he will play well with Dak. I think he could be a better Noah Brown and that is well worth a 4th round pick.
Former coaches at this point.

He hasn’t even taken a snap with Dak yet. As several have said above, he is making this team.

Personally I’m not writing the guy off, but barring a couple of extremely unfortunate situations (injuries), I dont see how he gets much of an opportunity.

Also is he going to cover kicks? You’d think he would have to as WR5/6.

The other reason this matters is because you want another player who adds a dynamic that can boost your team. And you will regret chasing that 4th round pick down the line if you're not careful.

Many times in life it's better to cut your losses to focus on something else. This is no different.

Here you guys go....."you don't agree with me so you are a homer" lol.
If you are still saying this was a good trade.

You are a homer. It’s pretty simple.

The guy sucks. The trade for Pickens proves the team agrees. Or Jerry wouldn’t have pulled the trigger.

At some point in the season the Cowboys will need Mingo and Tolbert to make a play. Both will get plenty of opportunities.
