I only saw parts of the KC versus Houston game, but I watched all of the Cincy vs. Pit game and the Minny vs. Seattle game and the Green Bay vs. Washington game.
- All of these teams are far better tackling teams than the Cowboys except for the Skins and they are still better at tackling, but not by such a wide margin. This tells me that my thinking was right...this league is more about tackling that it may have ever been. Players get the ball in the open field and the key is not to prevent that from happening, but more to bring down that ball carrier as soon as possible.
- The safety play was much better across the board than what the Cowboys have.
- You can see far better run support help from the DB's in these games. If there's a stalemate between the O-Line and the front seven, most of these teams had either safeties or corners coming right up and making the stop. It was GLARING to see the CB help in run defense compared to the dreck we have at CB. Not only is this a tackling thing, but I would imagine that it's the ability to fight off blocks. It is almost weird to watch at times because I wasn't used to seeing a CB fly in and bring down the running back so quickly.
- I'm starting to become a believer that that Air Coryell offensive scheme just isn't going to cut in today's game unless you have superior talent. They say that Bruce Arians runs it, but I don't quite buy into it. What I see is a lot of trips and bunching of the WR's and then mixing up the routes so they don't have the X receiver running deep patterns all of the time, the Y-receiver running pivot routes all of the time and the Z running intermediate routes all of the time. I really didn't see a ton of diversity in Minny's offense (Norv is the O-Coordinator). I thought the Bengals needed to look for AJ Green more often and didn't do much, if any, trips or bunching, but they did mix things up in different ways.
Even with the success the offense had last year, you had to have the best O-Line in football, with Dez Bryant, Romo and Murray on the offense for it to be successful.
- These teams played a ton more zone that we played this year. However, it still looks like the Cover 2 defense is not exactly dead. Saw quite a bit of that this weekend. But in order to play that zone, you have to get pressure on the QB and that usually requires a lot more blitzing that we currently do.
- I really thought the Cowboys were the only team to lose the way that the Bengals did. Man, that was a giant mess of undisciplined players and bad coaching. A lot of people ragged on Burfict like he was the worst human in the world. He made a big sack on Roethlisberger that completely changed the outcome of the game and then made the interception that should have ended the game. Rag on Burfict and Pacman all you want, but if Hill doesn't fumble the ball, it never happens. In fact, I'm not so sure why they just didn't kneel on the ball. Kneel on it 3 times, punt it into the end zone and make the Steelers, with an injured Roethlisberger and no timeouts, try to get into field goal range with probably about 30 seconds left.
Then when Hill fumbles the ball...they give Roethlisberger, who was out with an injured shoulder, have short stuff all day. Why not force him to try and throw a deep route with that bad shoulder?
As far as the Burfict penalty, it should have been called...but, I do believe he was trying to hit Brown with his shoulder. The call was the correct one, but to act like he just did the worst cheap shot hit ever is another thing. James Harrison has had far worse and ugly cheap shots than Burfict. Of course, we don't know what was said, but I have a hard time believing that Joey Porter, a notorious trash talker, was innocent on that one and he should have been penalized for coming out on the field. It should have been 1st and 10 with the ball after the Burfict penalty.
- The refs now can't differentiate pass interference versus illegal contact.
- Anyway, this team has a long ways to go. We can be a good team next year, but with this offense we will have to rely on being healthy and Romo coming back sharp. The defense needs to make tackling, creating turnovers and switching up coverages all top priorities.
