Vacating historic wins when it no longer matters is a poor penalty. Not surprised that ND did this - they're motivated by money, not academic/sporting pride.

The infractions were self-reported by Notre Dame. If I recall correctly, 5 players were suspended for the season...to include CB KeiVarae Russell. Former starting QB Everett Golson was also suspended previously for academic fraud. The school taking the action in these cases. Other big programs often look the other way & some have resulted in probation, etc.

Not sure if this is accurate, but it's now said that the NCAA no longer considers a student-trainer as an employee of the university.

In terms of it being more about money...all bigger-time college football programs adhere to that at least to some degree.

Most pointless moves ever.
This is beyond pointless.

3 options.
1. Punish them with actual measures. Loss of one day of practice per week for a year or scholly reductions for 2-3 years.
2. Fine them large amount so there is a financial sting. If you fined them a full year's football revenue I promise they won't do that crap anymore.
3. Just put them on probation and admit it was a minor thing so no real actions are occurring provided they stay clear.

Actions by #99 today should have resulted in a revocation of scholarship and a Greyhound to his home town.

But I guess that is the Notre Dame way.

I'm surprised nobody's brought up institutionaized 'ticket wholesaling'* at ND games.

* 'legal' ticket touting. Selling tickets at multiples of face value to rip off fans and generate windfall profits for people with ND connections.

4. Suspend a full season or two... Only way.

Irish people hate it. There's a growing anti-ND fan base in Ireland - you should have heard the cheers in Dublin when Alabama routed them in 2012.

Well who really cares what they think in Ireland.

It seems pretty innocuous and I am married to an Irish woman. She has never complained once to me about being offended by the name.

Well there you go, if you're personal experience is unaffected in any way, then it shouldn't be a problem for others.

Isn't life grand.

Problem is, no matter what you do, say etc someone somewhere will be offended. If we try to ensure no one is ever offended (an impossible task) nothing ever gets done

Don't agree. The ND mascot is a particularly bad as it not only is a racist logo, but the fightin is also very insulting and is from an era when the English dehumanised the Irish as 2m were being killed by hunger due to the English taking all the agricultural produce leaving the natives to die.

I don't see how anyone cannot see it as being extremely racist and unnecessary.
