Now that Wade is here....do you guys think we are still going to be using Newman to shut down slot guys?

how many of you guys liked this when newman was on the slot?

me personally....i kind of liked it....i just hated when we would put Glenn on an elite reciever in goal line situations...or when we all know damn well he will get slapped around(santana moss)

what do you guys think?

That's an interesting question. I've thought about it before and I really couldn't come up with a reason why Newman was even in the slot to begin with. Obviously, the nickel back is normally in the slot, with the starter on the outside. There will be a lot of interesting changes with Wade I'm sure.

I hope we still sometimes keep Newman on the slot WR. And I also sometimes want him on the best WR.

What I DON'T want is for us to just do ONE THING with Newman and become predictable.

Putting him in the slot would shut the slot down allowing the safeties to double the outside WRs. Of course no coverage works when WRs have all day to run around and the QB has all day to wait for him to get open.

Yup.

W/ WP, we'll hopefully be able to apply more pressure. This will help out Henry more than anyone else in the secondary.

I'm most intrigued about what WP will get out of Spears and Canty.

If we really want to help out the D, we should grab a olineman either in FA or high in the draft, someone who can really help out the running game. Even the best defenses get exposed when they are on the field too much.

It probably comes down to what Phillips does with Henry. If he can get our defense to bring lot of pressure, then it possibly Henry will remain at CB. It also possible Henry gets moved to FS while Watkins develops for another 1-2 years and then steps into the job. I like Aaron Glenn's play but he's 33 and we really need a young CB who can legitimately step in/take over for him immediately and neither Reeves or Jones showed last year that they can. Of course I don't know how much play either got at CB. I do think Jones got some play at FS but doubt it was much.

If Jerry Jones willing speed money to sign Diehlman as our starting RG, that would be a big help. With Bledsoe hopefully not coming back & who knows about Riveria, I really believe we need an impact RG immediately rather then wait for one to develop from the draft. We'll also sign the best backup QB we can get, probably bring Gramatica back & should also resign Gurode & Colombo; in case of latter 2 this year would be 2nd year for both as starters for a full season so we should even see more improvement as they become more comfortable. In Colombo's case that should include becoming physically stronger now that he can devote his time to that instead of rehabbing his knee like last year. Will also be interesting to see what Austin/Hurd/Rector show in minicamps etc. I'm hoping at least one of them becomes a quality legit NFL starter. BTW: We also need resign Crayton; he's definitely a really good WR who probably a #2 WR on another team. We need him if either Glenn or TO go down (that's if TO even comes back which is probable).
Will be real interesting to see what Garrett & Soprano really think of some of our offensive players w/o Parcells around.

Hated it! Leave Newman outside, allow him to make more plays.

It was far too easy to for opposing coaches to pick who matched up on who with this idea so I never did quite get it.

I don't know if he'll stay in the slot -- I guess we'll find out what Bowles and especially Wade think of that idea -- but I do expect to see a lot less of Newman's talent wasted as other teams drop a decoy TE or RB into his short cover-2 zone while the best WRs are running real patterns against Henry and our safeties.

The Detroit game, last play of the first half. Newman was in the slot on the same side as Henry and Glenn was in man coverage on Roy Williams. He got completely abused.

Yeah look at the bears, they were on the field all game in the SB and were exposed totally
