You can hear it already in the voices of the defensive players-excitement, anticipation, fun! That is what this attack style defense brings to this team. It will also bring wins. No more will our secondary chase WRs & TEs around for 10 seconds while the enemy QB sits back & picks them apart.
Just listen to the Jason Ferguson interview on DC.com. He has been a NT his whole career, and HE is excited about switching from a two-gap to a one-gap system. "Every defense is going to be vulnerable, but you got to man up. You got to beat your man & go to the ball. You're still gonna be in that situation, but now you got more guys comin'. You're countin' on the corner ain't gonna be locked up on a man forever, you know. Now we can actually get off the ball, cause when you're playing a one-gap system, it's not like a two-gap, where you have to stand your man up & see what's going on, then try to make a play on the ball. By then, the receiver is running three different directions & the corner's running behind him."
"It's better for our defensive line, cause you're doing what you did in college and high school, where it's hit your man, and let's go make a play. In two-technique, you're worrying about going too far this way or that way, cause you're leaving a gap open, cause you're playin' both sides of the man. We're not playing gaps any more, we're playing in shades, where it's more like we try to figure out what the offense is trying to do, then attack it & go make plays."
When you hear your NT getting excited about a change to an attacking mode of defense, you've got to get pumped. I have never liked the brand of defense Parcells was trying to sell. Too conservative. Instead of protecting the secondary, like it's supposed to do, it ends up serving them up on a platter, because you're making the defensive line worry too much about too many things. Hitting shades & one-gapping is going to have a domino effect. When the "D" line starts penetrating, the offensive linemen have to worry about stopping that before they can think about blocking down the field. As they become occupied with the penetrating linemen, (something Spears & Canty thrived on in college), the LBs are freed up to shoot gaps & make plays.
This defense is going to allow all front 7 players to make more plays & be more involved with the outcome. Parcells handcuffed Spears & Canty, then berated them for not making more plays. Phillips will take what each player does best, and use it to maximize their effectiveness.
I see this team going as far as the defense will take them. As far as that is concerned, with the talent we have, this year's championship game may be the first of several SBs we finally get back to.
