Since the Cowboys have had a slow start to the FA period and have missed out on several top players, now who would you look at? Forget the scheduled visits and all of that, this is just your opinion with respect to players still available and positions that we need filled. You can include FAs only or both FAs and draft prospects, it's up to you.
According to JJ, OL, FS, PK and WR were going to be out main objectives heading into this offseason.
On the OL we signed Kosier, but nobody really knows if he'll be used as a G or a T. Either way though Rivera is aging and injury prone, and Allen is aging and due a bunch of money so 1 more G wouldn't hurt because Allen is likely gone anyways. Most people here seem to like Neal, but I'd much rather see someone like Tutan Reyes come in instead. At OT we've got some depth, but in the draft I'd like to see us take a look at someone like Jonathan Scott for his versatility. He played LT in college, but also played RT and LS in the bowl games.
FS is a spot that is very uncertain right now. There are quality FS's on the FA market right now like Demps and Carpenter. Then in the draft there are also guys like Anthony Smith and the Bullocks kid that could be grabbed late day 1. Personally I'd like to see the Cowboys explore both options to create some competition at that spot and hope that someone can win out.
PK is a spot that has really confused me thus far. Longwell had a scheduled visit here and then signed with the Vikes before he ever arrived, and Bryant resigned with the Bucs before we ever showed any interest. Now we're either stuck trying to get Vinatieri for approx $3mil/year, trying to find a washed up vet, or going with another unproven rookie. There are some interesting prospects this year like Connor Hughes and Stephen Gostokowski, but do we really want to live with the uncertainties of a rookie PK again? I think the best choice at this point is to try and get Josh Brown away from Seattle at the cost of a low draft pick.
Obviously when it comes to WR, the one name that sticks out is T.O. If he can come in and be productive, great, but there are other options to explore too. There is Jabar Gaffney that played under Chris Palmer in Houston. He wasn't overly productive, but he's still young, talented, and would probably come rather cheaply. Then there is also Brian Finneran from Atlanta who has experience and good size. There are also guys like Holmes and Jackson in the draft this year that have to potential to be very good. I'd like to see use skip T.O. or sign him cheaply, grab another cheaper veteran in FA, and draft Holmes in the 1st round.
LB is a place where we've got good talent but little depth. At WOLB, I think that we're set with Ware and Thornton but if McGinest comes cheap, he would be a welcomed addition. If Burnett steps up, I think he'll be a good fit in the inside but we still need depth there. Sharper might be good in there depending on his price. At the SOLB spot, we don't have a whole lot. Indy's Thornton would look very good out there IMO.
