Oh what timing....

Nuggets' Anthony Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Apr 14, 5:12 PM (ET)

DENVER (AP) -NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony was arrested early Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, hours after his worst game of the season.

The Denver Nuggets forward was arrested on Interstate 25, police said. He was alone in the car and pulled over for weaving and not dimming his lights.

Detective Sharon Hahn said Anthony failed a series of sobriety tests. He was charged with DUI, then taken to police headquarters before being released to a "sober responsible party," Hahn said. Anthony is due in court May 14.

Mark Warkentien, the Nuggets' vice president of basketball operations, said the team was aware of the situation but declined comment. The Nuggets did not practice Monday and Anthony wasn't available. He's expected at practice Tuesday.

Anthony's attorney, Dan Recht, said his client consented to a blood test, but results won't be available for about two weeks.

"Carmelo apologizes to his fans, the Denver community, his teammates and the Nuggets organization for the distraction this is causing them," Recht said.

The Nuggets (49-32) moved a half game ahead of Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference on Sunday night when they beat Houston 111-94. Denver can clinch a fifth straight postseason berth by beating Memphis at home Wednesday night or if the Warriors lose at Phoenix on Monday night or against Seattle on Wednesday night.

Anthony was held to 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting against a Rockets team that was missing defensive specialist Shane Battier. Anthony did extend his NBA-best streak of double-digit games to 206.

On Saturday, he committed a flagrant foul against Utah's Deron Williams that changed the course of a close game. The Jazz went on to win 124-97.

Anthony was named an All-Star starter for the first time this year. He's fourth in the NBA in scoring (25.8) and is averaging a career-best 7.4 rebounds.

Last season, he was involved in a brawl at Madison Square Garden. After J.R. Smith was collared on his way to a breakaway basket in the closing minutes of a rout, Anthony, then the league's leading scorer, dropped the New York Knicks' Mardy Collins with a punch that drew a 15-game suspension.

In February, Anthony was ticketed in Colorado for driving 25 mph over the posted speed limit. A hearing is set for next month.

In addition to DUI, Anthony is unofficially charged with being D-U-M-B.

Anthony should send a thank you gift to the Suns for knocking the Warriors out of playoff contention last night. If he had ended up costing the Nuggets their spot in the playoffs, the response would not have been good.

Anthony has got to be one of the most annoying superstars out of the 2003 class.

Unlike Wade, and LeBron, Anthony has done nothing for team other than lead them to first round exits, and cause embrassement to the team and fans year after year.

I feel so sorry for Iverson.

Cops Called For Technical in Melo Assist?

Denver PD has launched an investigation into whether several officers acted inappropriately by giving recently-arrested Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony a ride to a hotel after his fianceé refused to come pick his *** up!

When you're popped for DUI in Denver, the law says cops take you to detox or release you to a "sober, responsible party." After the bust, cops took Melo to a local hospital for a blood test. The CW2 reports that's when they called his baby mama La La to come get him -- she said no way, Jose!

Instead of taking him to their other option -- detox -- a sergeant personally took Anthony in his police cruiser to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Denver, where he was staying.

A police spokesperson says the officer went "above and beyond through a personal relationship" and there wasn't "anything wrong" with what he did. But it doesn't end there ...

Another cop drove Melo's $130,000 sick silver Mercedes to a safe place -- a police parking lot -- so he could come back later and pick it up. What's supposed to happen is the car is towed to an impound yard, but apparently the cops didn't want Melo's ride to get vandalized.

A rep for Anthony could not be reached for comment.

UPDATE: TMZ spoke to a spokesperson for Denver PD who explained Carmelo's Mercedes was moved for safety, because it was on a highway and not a street. And as for La La not picking him up from the pokey? She claimed she had child care issues.
