New York (CNN) -- A Doctors Without Borders physician who recently returned to New York from West Africa has tested positive for the Ebola virus, becoming the first diagnosed case in the city, authorities said late Thursday.

The doctor, identified as Craig Spencer, 33, came back from treating Ebola patients in Guinea October 17 and developed a fever, nausea, pain and fatigue Thursday. He is in isolation and being treated at New York's Bellevue Hospital, one of the eight hospitals statewide that Gov. Andrew Cuomo designated earlier this month as part of an Ebola preparedness plan.

Spencer went to for a jog, may have gone to a restaurant, traveled the city's vast subway system and went bowling before feeling ill but authorities stressed that the likelihood of him spreading the virus was low.

21 day period, so he was well within the limits.

To me, if anyone had been anywhere around someone with Ebola, they should be under watch for those 3 weeks.
That should be law.

I still can't get over how nurses treating an extremely contagious patient on his deathbed did not at least have to stay home or in relative isolation for 3 weeks.
Instead, they went on a cries, got on a plane, etc.

It's mind boggling

What's equally distressing is that this Dr., apparently, flew into one of the Airports fitted with detection equipment.

But if he doesn't have a fever or show symptoms then, there was nothing to be done. Making them stay in an isolation unit 21 days would be pretty tough, but at least they should be monitored(GPS) and told to not go in larger public for 21 days.

Exactly. The whole idea of relying on equipment that only identified infected patients after they have shown signs of being infected to being with was ineffectual IMO. I mean, once a person shows signs, you don't need that equipment. You simply need to ask a few questions and look at the patient. That, IMO, prevents very little.

The good news is that there may be a solution on the way. A French firm, Vedalab, may have come up with a testing method that can determine infection in 15 minutes. If this is true, then this thing can become much more manageable. If it works, the need for long term quarantine of people that may not be infected is solved. Testing can actually happen at ground zero, as opposed to having to wait till they fly to other countries and then have to deal with them there.

People who have been to West Africa and worked with Ebola should not be allowed into the US. Under any circumstance.
