PIERCE: COWBOYS NOT THE TEAM TO BEAT IN EAST

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

September 5, 2007 -- If the Giants are to take seriously the expectations of the outside football world looking in at them, they might as well not even start their season Sunday night in Dallas. The predictions from nearly every NFL-related publication has the Giants finishing no higher than third in the four-team NFC East.

Heading into the opener, linebacker Antonio Pierce yesterday was asked if he saw the first opponent for the Giants - the rival Cowboys - as the team to beat in the division.

“I see the Giants,” Pierce immediately shot back.

The Giants?

“Why are they better than us?” Pierce said. “My answer is us. We were on top of this division the last two years, we lost it at the end of the season last year. But it’s OK, we want it that way. We’ll finish last. It probably will be Dallas, Philly and Washington all tied for first place. We’ll probably be 0-16 hoping we get, who is the No. 1 pick next year?”

WR Plaxico Burress finally made it back to the practice field after missing most of training camp and all four preseason games with a sprained ankle, the flu and back spasms.

“I felt pretty good,” Burress said. “I just hope I can keep feeling this way.”

The other starter able to return was LB Kawika Mitchell, who had been out with a groin injury.

Former Giants QB Phil Simms, currently the top analyst at CBS Sports, doesn’t sound as if he condones Tiki Barber’s repeated criticism of Tom Coughlin. Asked on HBO’s “Costas Now” if he bought into Barber’s contention that his decision to retire was based largely on the fact Coughlin was his coach, Simms said, “I know a coach can do a lot to you as a player. He can change the way you think about it. But if I wanted to play football, I can promise you, and I’m speaking if you want to play, no coach is gonna stop you from playing.”

Simms added Bill Parcells “made my career” and won two Super Bowls, but there are still some things he’d like to say about his former coach. “But, I’m not going to, because of what he did for me,” Simms said. “And two, just my respect for the game.”

Also returning to practice were DE Adrian Awasom, CB Kevin Dockery, S Michael Johnson, G Grey Ruegamer and LB Reggie Torbor. ... As expected, five players were unable to practice and will make up the bulk of the inactive list for Sunday’s game: FB Robert Douglas (knee), CB Sam Madison (hamstring), WR David Tyree (wrist), T Guy Whimper (ankle) and LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee).

:clap2:
Respect for the people who make up the game and the game itself. Simms is part of a dying breed. Then again, he's a retired old veteran. With the younger generation adopting pro wrestling style showmanship and reality television mentalities, this kind of respect for the game will become less prevalent in the years to come.

Shocking! A player for the Giants picks them to win the division? That is incredible!

So BP didnt make Simms play like robot?

No he just benched him repeatedly in favor of Jeff Rutledge and Jeff Hostetler.

Bill Parcells never "benched" him for Rutledge or Hostetler. He was benched in favor of Scott Brunner early in his career. Once Simms won the job back, he kept it unless he was injured. Ray Handley was the coach who benched Simms in favor of Hostetler late in his career.

The next time you want to try to bash, it helps to have your facts straight.

FIVE NEW DIVISION CHAMPS

By STEVE SERBY
NY POST

September 5, 2007 -- AFC EAST

1. PATRIOTS (11-5)

Coach Bill Belichick, clearly obsessed with winning a fourth championship, lassoed prize defender OLB Adalius Thomas, and QB Tom Brady is a kid in a candy store now with reinvigorated WRs Randy Moss, Donte’ Stallworth and Wes Welker as new targets.

2. JETS (9-7)

RB Thomas Jones will be QB Chad Pennington’s new best friend, and belated kudos to Terry Bradway for WR Jerricho Cotchery and S Kerry Rhodes. Eric Mangini is the real deal, but so is the schedule.

3. BILLS (8-8)

Rookie Marshawn Lynch is a 1,200-yard back.

4. DOLPHINS (6-10)

OLB Joey Porter’s knee is problematic, and QB Trent Green had problems holding off Cleo Lemon.

AFC NORTH

1. BENGALS (10-6)

At least QB Carson Palmer won’t do anything to violate commissioner Roger Goodell’s personal conduct policy.

2. RAVENS (9-7)

RB Willis McGahee can only help QB Steve McNair.

3. STEELERS (8-8)

They’ll miss Porter and Bill Cowher. Rebuilding year for new coach Mike Tomlin and QB Ben Roethlisberger.

4. BROWNS (5-11)

Doubtful QB Brady Quinn can save coach Romeo Crennel.

AFC SOUTH

1. COLTS (11-5)

The heat is off QB Peyton Manning, but the defense looks suspect again.

2. JAGUARS (8-8)

QB David Garrard has plenty to prove, but he doesn’t have enough firepower.

3. TEXANS (7-9)

Growing pains for QB Matt Schaub and new coach Gary Kubiak.

4. TITANS (7-9)

QB Vince Young can do only so much without Drew Bennett and CB-KR Pacman Jones.

AFC WEST

1. BRONCOS (11-5)

QB Jay Cutler and Mike Shanahan make a dangerous duo, RB Travis Henry will rush for 1,200 yards, and watch out if rookie DE Jarvis Moss bolsters pass rush.

2. CHARGERS (10-6)

I love RB LaDainian Tomlinson, I love QB Philip Rivers, I love LB Shawne Merriman ... and Norv Turner is a nice guy, but he isn’t a championship head coach.

3 CHIEFS (6-10)

“Hard Knocks’ all season with QB Damon Huard as Herm Edwards pounds RB Larry Johnson over and over and over again.

4. RAIDERS (4-12)

Good luck to QB JaMarcus Russell, if he ever signs, and new coach Lane Kiffin.

NFC EAST

1. COWBOYS (10-6)

But something tells me that if Bill Parcells believed Tony Romo was a championship quarterback, Wade Phillips wouldn’t be Jerry Jones’ players’ coach.

2. EAGLES (9-7)

If QB Donovan McNabb is all the way back. A big if.

3. GIANTS (8-8)

QB Eli Manning will be better, but Tiki Barber can’t be replaced, and LT and Harry Carson don’t live in East Rutherford anymore.

4. Commanders (7-9)

Who is the battlefield commander? QB Jason Campbell? And who rushes the passer? Sam Huff?

NFC NORTH

1. BEARS (10-6)

QB Wrecks Grossman will be helped by rookie TE Greg Olsen, but Lovie Smith has a headache if RB Cedric Benson can’t carry the load.

2. LIONS (10-6)

Mike Martz can’t wait to show off rookie stud WR Calvin Johnson in his four-receiver sets, and QB Jon Kitna can’t wait to throw to him.

3. VIKINGS (8-8)

Tarvaris Jackson is hardly the answer at quarterback, but an Adrian Peterson/Chester Taylor RB tandem and impregnable run defense makes them contenders in a pathetic division.

4. PACKERS (5-11)

Cheeseheads rebuilding defense, but cheating QB Brett Favre.

NFC SOUTH

1. SAINTS (11-5)

Sean Payton has bolstered secondary and given QB Drew Brees, RB Reggie Bush and RB Deuce McAllister an exciting new toy: rookie WR Robert Meachem.

2. PANTHERS (9-7)

QB Jake Delhomme and/or David Carr and WR DeShaun Foster and/or DeAngelo Williams will miss WR Keyshawn Johnson.

3. BUCS (5-11)

Rookie pass rusher Gaines Adams and ex- Giant LT Luke Petitgout have Jon Gruden excited, but QB Jeff Garcia only wishes he were throwing again to T.O., and Cadillac Williams needs more gas in his tank. Don’t expect Tiki to question Ronde’s leadership skills.

4. FALCONS (3-13)

Rookie coach Bobby Petrino actually has a pair of budding stars in secondyear RB Jerious Norwood and No. 1 draft DE Jamaal Anderson, but it is up to journeyman Joey Harrington to pick up the pieces of the sorry Michael Vick mess that has deflated Arthur Blank’s franchise. Petrino will miss Louisville as much as WR Joe Horn will miss New Orleans.

NFC WEST

1. RAMS(10-6)

QB Marc Bulger is woefully underrated, WR Drew Bennett and TE Randy McMichael are tall red-zone targets, Parcells probably wishes he drafted RB Steven Jackson over Julius Jones, and rookie DT Adam Carriker shores up run defense.

2. CARDINALS (9-7)

QB Matt Leinart has weapons everywhere he turns, and new coach Ken Whisenhunt has playmakers on his young, emerging defense.

3. SEAHAWKS (7-9)

The division has caught up with RB Shaun Alexander and QB Matt Hasselbeck.

4. 49ERS (7-9)

Coach Mike Nolan bolstered defense (CB Nate Clements, ILB Patrick Willis), but QB Alex Smith isn’t quite ready to make the difference, even with RB Frank Gore taking the heat off him.
