NY Daily News:
1. DOLPHINS: Jake Long (T, Michigan)
Bill Parcells didn’t go to Miami to retire, but with this awful 1-15 crew he inherited, he may wish he was playing shuffleboard on Collins Ave. instead. He signed a LT. He really needed L.T. Especially for $30 million guaranteed. He is trying to trade Fred Astaire, I mean Jason Taylor, for a No. 1 so he can get a QB, probably Michigan’s Chad Henne.
2. RAMS: Glenn Dorsey (DT, LSU)
It’s Dorsey vs. Chris Long. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett is pushing for Dorsey, who is supposed to be the next Warren Sapp (ex-Jet Dewayne Robertson formerly held that title). Rams will move DT Adam Carriker, last year’s No. 1, back to DE, where he was an All-American at Nebraska. The Greatest Show On Turf is a fond, but distant, memory.
3. FALCONS: Matt Ryan (QB, Boston College)
Falcons owner Arthur Blank, the co-founder of Home Depot, is familiar with the business of building from the ground up. And since his QB is in jail for dogfighting, he needs a new foundation. Is Ryan the next John Elway? No. But he’d give the Falcons a desperately needed non-dogfighting face of the franchise. If the Rams switch and take Chris Long, then the Falcons could take Dorsey.
4. RAIDERS: Vernon Gholston (DE, Ohio State)
Will Al Davis be able to resist the electricity Darren McFadden would bring to his offense? Justin Fargas, Michael Bush, LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes should be enough RBs. Or can he resist taking Chris Long, Hall of Famer Howie’s kid? Gholston can be a game-changer. The Raiders are a ghastly 19-61 since making the Super Bowl in 2002.
5. CHIEFS: Chris Long (DE, Virginia)
Herm Edwards loves to “play to win the game” 10-7, but if he doesn’t win enough this year, he could be gone after just three seasons. If Ryan is on the board, how can the Chiefs not take him when all they have is Brodie Croyle? Long has great genes and will replace Jared Allen, traded to the Vikings.
6. JETS: Darren McFadden (RB, Arkansas)
Jets have talked to the Rams about moving up for McFadden. The Jets have shown the most interest of any team in McFadden. He can be Adrian Peterson. The Jets need firepower. The first thing they should do is sit him down with Curtis Martin. If he’s gone, then it could be Troy CB Leodis McKelvin. Woody Johnson has spent the offseason signing his name to a lot of big checks. Good thing customers will always need J&J’s Band-Aids.
7. PATRIOTS: Sedrick Ellis (DT, Southern Cal)
Ellis’ teammate, LB Keith Rivers, makes more sense with the aging Pats LBs (Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Junior Seau), but Bill Belichick has picked one first-round LB in 13 years as a head coach. Pats could move up two spots for Gholston. By the way, the Jets need to check if Belichick planted spy cameras in their draft room.
8. RAVENS: Leodis McKelvin (CB, Troy)
It’s Kyle Boller vs. Troy Smith, not exactly Montana vs. Young, so they’re trying to move up for Ryan. In ’03, Baltimore took Terrell Suggs at No. 10, then traded to get back into first round to get Boller at No. 19. If Ryan is gone, they take value with McKelvin and try to trade up late in first for Brian Brohm, Joe Flacco or Chad Henne.
9. BENGALS: Keith Rivers (LB, Southern Cal)
The Cowboys, Commanders and Eagles, all chasing the Giants, are hot for Chad Johnson. But rather than get rid of a big distraction and pick up at least a No. 1 pick from any of those teams, Marvin Lewis has dared Johnson to sit out the season. Why is it nobody wants to play in Cincinnati?
10. SAINTS: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (CB, Tennessee St.)
Now if Sean Payton would offer this pick for Jeremy Shockey he would get the Giants’ attention. The Saints had the 30th-ranked pass defense, so the idea is to get the best corner they can find. Even so, they are trying to get to No. 2 for Dorsey, who grew up a Saints fan in Louisiana.
11. BILLS: Devin Thomas (WR, Michigan State)
The plan is to get Trent Edwards more weapons. They hit on Marshawn Lynch last year, so running back is set. They can use another threat on the outside to go with Lee Evans. Buffalo is playing one regular season home game in Toronto against Miami in December. They lose their home edge with the roof closed against a team that hates the cold.
12. BRONCOS: Ryan Clady (T, Boise State)
Mike Shanahan has gone 10 seasons without John Elway and it hasn’t been pretty. But with Jay Cutler’s potential, Shanahan has a chance to prove he can win without Elway. RB Jonathan Stewart is a possibility here, too, but anybody can rush for 1,500 yards in Shanahan’s offense. Just ask him.
13. PANTHERS: Chris Williams (T, Vanderbilt)
Jake Delhomme got hurt, David Carr was awful and hurt, so John Fox had to pull Vinny Testaverde off the couch to start a few games. That’s why there’s been talk about Fox trying to move up for Ryan. If Ryan gets past the Jets, Fox could make a deal with the Pats. Otherwise, Williams provides protection for Delhomme.
14. BEARS: Rashard Mendenhall (RB, Illinois)
Offensive coordinator Ron Turner, then the Illinois head coach, recruited Mendenhall. Cedric Benson was handed the RB job after Thomas Jones was traded and he hardly ran like the two previous backs the Bears took No. 4 overall: Gale Sayers and Walter Payton. He played in just 11 games last year and rushed for 674 yards.
15. LIONS: Derrick Harvey (DE, Florida)
Matt Millen must be confused. The Lions are not picking in the top 10. And he’s not — I’m pretty sure — going to take another wide receiver in the first round. Detroit was 6-2 in the first half and 1-7 in the second. Twice last season, the Lions gave up more than 50 points.
16. CARDINALS: Jonathan Stewart (RB, Oregon)
The great unknown: Can Ken Whisenhunt keep Matt Leinart out of the hot tub? Edgerrin James has carried 2,849 times in nine seasons, and averaged less than four yards per carry in two seasons in Arizona. Stewart ran for 1,722 yards in ‘07, but is coming off turf toe surgery. One team has him in top seven over McFadden.
17. CHIEFS: Branden Albert (G, Virginia)
KC didn’t want to pay $31 million guaranteed to NFL sack leader Jared Allen, so it traded him to the Vikings for this pick and two third-rounders. Hey, the Chiefs finished 4-12 with Allen, they can finish 4-12 without him. Could trade up to No. 11 for Clady or Williams.
18. TEXANS: Mike Jenkins (CB, South Florida)
The eyes of Texas are upon the Texans. They finished 8-8, their best season since their birth in 2002. And now they could be ready to make a playoff run if Matt Schaub takes his game to next level. Jenkins fills a need with Dunta Robinson (knee) expected out until midseason.
19. EAGLES: Jeff Otah (T, Pittsburgh)
Lito Sheppard, who lost his starting job to free agent Asante Samuel, is being shopped around. Philly struck out trying to sign Randy Moss or trade for Larry Fitzgerald and Chad Johnson. But this is a draft rich in OTs, so we see them getting young legs behind Jon Runyan and William Thomas.
20. BUCS: DeSean Jackson (WR, California)
Joey Galloway is still among the NFL’s fastest players, but he’s 36. He played with bad shoulder vs. Giants in playoffs and passing game was a dud. Jackson is just 5-11, 178, but he runs a 4.35. Lots of concern whether Cadillac Williams will play again.
21. Commanders: Limas Sweed (WR, Texas)
Dan Snyder kept his checkbook closed in free agency — did he finally learn he can’t buy the Super Bowl? — but is trying to make up for it now. He offered this pick and more for Chad Johnson. He’s also after Arizona’s Anquan Boldin. So, if he stays put, it’s got to be a wideout.
22. COWBOYS: Felix Jones (RB, Arkansas)
Marion Barber ran out of gas in the second half against the Giants in the playoffs, and with Julius Jones now in Seattle, the ‘Boys need another back to take some of the carries. Barber is such a physical player there’s no way he can get 20 carries a game. They wanted McFadden, but settle for his teammate.
23. STEELERS: Gosder Cherilus (T, Boston College)
Big Ben wants a big receiver. He had one a few years ago, but he just caught the Super Bowl winning TD for the Giants. Steelers would love it if Albert fell this far and he would take over for Alan Faneca, who traded in wins for the Jets’ $21 million guaranteed.
24. TITANS: James Hardy (WR, Indiana)
Getting Justin McCareins back wasn’t enough? The Oilers/Titans have been looking for wideouts since the days of Warren Moon throwing to Ernest Givins. Jeff Fisher’s biggest problem: In a year Titans made the playoffs, Vince Young regressed.
25. SEAHAWKS: Lawrence Jackson (DE, Southern Cal)
They are just two years removed from the Super Bowl but undergoing massive change. Shaun Alexander was cut this week and Mike Holmgren is gone after this season. Jim Mora is a defensive coach and he takes over next year. So Seattle goes defense.
26. JAGUARS: Kentwan Balmer (DT, North Carolina)
Marcus Stroud was traded to the Bills, so Balmer makes a lot of sense, as opposed to David Garrard, who will make an awful lot of dollars ($20 million guaranteed) in his new deal. The Jags are clearly sold on Garrard, who didn’t even begin last season as the starter.
27. CHARGERS: Aqib Talib (CB, Kansas)
The Chargers are loaded and should be the Pats’ strongest challenger in the AFC. San Diego would love to get Jonathan Stewart or Felix Jones if either falls this far to take Michael Turner’s place as insurance for LaDainian Tomlinson. Eli beat Philip Rivers to the Super Bowl, but this could be Rivers’ year.
28. COWBOYS: Antoine Cason (CB, Arizona)
Pacman Jones will be Jerry Jones’ latest reclamation project if he can stay out of trouble for two months and Roger Goodell reinstates him. Let’s just say nothing is guaranteed. Bad news for the Cowboys: Dallas is loaded with strip clubs. Even with Jones, the ‘Boys need more help at corner.
29. 49ERS: Phillip Merling (DE, Clemson)
Mike Nolan lost his GM responsibilities this year. He will lose his job next year if he doesn’t at least come close to the playoffs. Mike Martz is Alex Smith’s fourth offensive coordinator in four years. The top wideouts are gone, so the Niners go for defense.
30. PACKERS: Patrick Lee (CB, Auburn)
If you watched Plaxico Burress do whatever he wanted in the NFC Championship Game, then you know the Packers need cornerbacks to develop behind Al Harris and Charles Woodson. It’s time for another Brett Favre coming-out-of-retirement story: It’s been two weeks, after all.
31. GIANTS: Kenny Phillips (S, Miami)
Jerry Reese’s phone could be red-hot if Ryan is the only QB off the board. The Falcons, Chiefs and Ravens could all want to move up a few spots to jump ahead of Miami to get Brian Brohm, Joe Flacco or Chad Henne. Tough call for Reese between Phillips and Tennesse LB Jerod Mayo. Can’t go wrong with Miami safeties.
5 QUESTIONS FOR ...RON JAWORSKI
Ron Jaworski
April 25, 2008 -- ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski dissected 16 hours of film a week for several weeks to prepare for Saturday's NFL draft, and he talked about the Jets New York Jets
' and Giants' plans, among other topics, with The Post's Justin Terranova.
Q: Is Darren McFadden the most talented player in the draft?
A: I am not sure he is going to be the great player everyone expects him to be. He is the most intriguing to me. I like his straight-line speed. When he gets in space it's a wow factor, and he is going to make big plays for you. He does not have the lateral mobility an Adrian Peterson or a Fred Taylor.
Q: Will there be extra pressure on the Jets, given their past draft blunders and the spotlight shining on them, to draft McFadden if he falls to them with the sixth pick?
A: There will be added pressure and it's a very bad thing. I am not going to say they are going to take him, but it will be really hard to pass on him. It's New York, and you want to find the right fit that will excite your fan base. That shouldn't be your reason for taking a guy, but it will certainly come into play.
Q: Can the Giants New York Giants
duplicate the tremendous draft they had last year?
A: I think it will be very difficult. Teams are going to look at what the Giants did last year, drafting NFL-ready players that can jump in and contribute immediately to a championship team, and duplicate that.
Q: Where do you think the Giants will go with the last pick of the first round?
A: They need secondary help. Either a safety or an additional corner. As I looked at them last year in the playoffs, I thought it was an area that could be exploited. I like the kid Kenny Phillips out of Miami, and he might be there that late.
Q: What's your take on the quarterback group coming out this year?
A: Matt Ryan is by far the best quarterback in this draft. There's a pretty big delta between him and the guys after him. Then you look at Joe Flacco, Brian Brohm, Chad Henne in the group after him going late- first or early- second round.
