Terrell Owens would not be a good catch for Giants or Jets

by Gary Myers
Friday, January 16th

Terrell Owens, who poisons teams, destroys locker-room chemistry and drops too many passes, may be on the verge of getting fired by the Cowboys, the third team he has ripped apart.

The Giants desperately need a big playmaking wide receiver to replace Plaxico Burress. The Jets need a No. 1 receiver to go along with Lavernaues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery.

Is it advisable that either team pursue Owens if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is willing to admit that signing T.O. to a second contract last year was even more of a mistake than signing him to his first contract in 2006?

Just Say No To T.O.

The Giants and Jets should lock the doors to their offices just in case T.O. and his agent Drew Rosenhaus drop by for a sales pitch. They should alert security guards not to let them within 100 yards of the building. They should tell T.O. no popcorn is sold in the metropolitan area.

And just in case Rosenhaus tries to push the issue, they should show T.O. tapes of Eli Manning and Brett Favre throwing the ball the last month of the season. That should get him to run away and not look back.

The Jets will have absolutely no interest if Owens is let go. They are focusing on hiring a coach - Rex Ryan could be announced next week if the Ravens lose on Sunday - and figuring out their quarterback situation. The Giants investigate everything and never take anything for granted and thus never rule anything out, but can you ever see Tom Coughlin signing off on the Giants bringing in Owens? Not a chance, especially after what he's been through with Burress. If the Giants suddenly feel desperate, perhaps Coughlin can just call his buddy Bill Parcells to find out just how difficult life with Owens is. Parcells had Owens in 2006 in Dallas and I never heard him refer to Owens by name. It was always "the player." Parcells has the personality to deal with anybody, but he detested coaching Owens. One year with Owens and Parcells retired.

Signing Owens "was not my decision," Parcells told me after he left Dallas. "I had to do the best I could with him, which is what I tried to do."

Neither the Giants nor Jets had any interest in Owens when the Eagles cut him following the 2005 season. The word out of Dallas is improving team chemistry has now become the Cowboys' No.1 offseason priority. It's not a hard project. All Jones has to do is get rid of Owens and things go back to normal, or as normal as they ever are for the Cowboys.

Not only was Owens his typical pain in the rear as the Cowboys melted down in the second half of the season and missed the playoffs, but he's also coming off a terrible season. He had only 69 catches. He had just two 100-yard games and none in the first 10 games. He's 35 years old. He blew up the locker room with his jealousy of Tony Romo's relationship with tight end Jason Witten, feeling that Romo was showing Witten preferential treatment. Owens felt he was not getting enough passes thrown his way. That created a week of turmoil in Dallas leading up to its game against the Giants.

Owens was then booed during the pregame introductions at Texas Stadium. How did this big mouth respond? He dropped the first pass Romo threw to him. He was booed again. He backed up his complaining about not getting the ball by dropping the ball.

He is also considered a bad influence on wide receivers Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton and running back Marion Barber. Nobody is worth that much trouble. Jones already dumped Pacman Jones, and Tank Johnson is probably gone, too. Jerry Jones is learning again that character counts for something.

If the Jets or Giants want to add a veteran receiver, then trading for Arizona's Anquan Boldin is the best option. He's a great player and a solid guy who feels the Cards did not follow through on promises to upgrade his contract. If he forces his way out, then the Giants and Jets should be lining up to get him. It's a weak free agent class with Cincinnati's T.J. Houshmandzadeh the best of the group, but Bengals coach Marvin Lewis wants him back and he could be franchised. It is a strong draft class for receivers.

In other words, anybody but T.O. The guy just can't be happy and is a huge distraction. With one year to go on Owens' deal, Jones gave him a new four-year, $36 million contract before the 2008 season with a $12.9 million signing bonus. He is due a $3.1 million roster bonus on June 3. His 2009 base salary is $2.7 million.

Right now, he counts $9 million against the Cowboys cap for '09. If they cut him, he counts $9.4 million-$9.5 million. It would cost the Cowboys about $500,000 more on the cap to cut him, but in actual dollars they would be saving $5.8 million between his roster bonus and salary. Not only can the Cowboys dump Owens, but they can save nearly $6 million in cash. Now that's a good deal.

According to ESPN, Jerry Jones' son Stephen, a team vice president, will try to convince his father to get rid of Owens. The son knows best.

T.O. already ruined the 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys. The Giants and Jets are smart enough, that when it comes to T.O., they must stay away. And they will.

Especially the guys who were claiming Owens would 'destroy the team'.

To them I guess they think this proves they were right.

When did the Giants/Jets ever express interest in T.O. in the first place?

That's my issue with the story. It's one thing to speculate that someone on the Cowboys wants T.O. gone. It's another to start wondering whether teams should take a chance on T.O., who hasn't even been cut yet.

Not for a guy who's hated him for years it isn't.

For him it's some twisted 'vindication' that he was 'right' all along.

Logic be darned!
