Some people talked about La-el Collins coming into the draft as having RT qualities in addition to guard. Is it financially impossible to keep Leary and move Collins to RT and then let Free go? Is that just a bad idea? Green just hasn't bee available enough.

Thoughts?

That would be nice, I think Leary would be to expensive and cut into what we can sign defensively, Damn salary cap. I'd be afraid to sign him to a backloaded contract because of his knee issues.

I think it would be possible, and a fairly decent opinion. But I just kinda get the feeling Leary is mentally ready to leave. I don't think he took kindly to being benched for a rookie last year.

Martin will get his big contract, that would have 3 long term large contracts on the OL. I don't think they can go past that. They can and should get by with youngsters or serviceable vets at the two open spots for the next 4 - 5 years.

Yes. As stated above you can't tie up all your resources on one position.
They will have three.
They need to get moving on RT replacement.

Is that just a bad idea? Depends on if Collins can play RT. Who knows about Green? The Cowboys can't know for certain based on his history.

That's what should happen. For whatever reason it won't. Salary cap is a cop out excuse. This is your team strength. Your true MVPs. Get it done and sacrifice elsewhere.

When Leary signs with another team we have lost this offseason.

Bad idea.

Facts:
  1. The Cowboys do not believe Collins is the answer at RT. They believe he can be a dominant guard.
  2. Free has one more year on his contract at $5-mil.
  3. Green has yet to play a complete season but has potential.
Conclusion: Free starts one more year unless Dallas drafts a starting RT in April or Green finally stays healthy and outplays him.

Free is likely the RT for one more year. Collins will be the LG because Leary will be too expensive to keep. There are too many other holes to fill and not enough cap space. Plus the Martin extension will likely be a priority.

Cooper is a hail mary at this point and shouldn't be counted on until proven otherwise. That's assuming he is back at all. He's also a FA right now and three other teams have already given up on him.

No. We are about to make Martin the highest paid G in the league. RT and LG will necessarily be manned by players either on rookie deals or serviceable veterans.

If Free is still starting at RT next year, the offseason was a colossal failure.

Get ready to be disappointed because RT don't grow on trees.

Look at some of the guys that Seattle and Minnesota started at tackle this season. The Giants spent a high first-round pick on Flowers (I know, LT, but still) and Free was better than him this season.

It is a great thought but only if Leary can be had for around 6-7m a year ......it he gets to 10m a year it is probably a no go

I am OK with trying Collins at RT but also like what I saw from Green and Cleary
I would also look into trading Collins for a young RT if a team wanted a OG

What would the franchise tag cost in salary? Are there any other players worth using it on?

Oh good. More 'Free's not the worst tackle in the league' talk.

Brian Winters of the Jets just got a 4-year, $29 million extension. And I believe that's after coming off of a shoulder injury that landed him on IR. So, it's likely that's where Leary's agent will start the bidding for his client. Given that the team is about to make Zack Martin the highest paid guard in the league, they simply can no longer afford Leary.

I hope they give Collins a shot at right tackle, but they really closed the book on that quickly the first time they looked.
