Is it a weakness or a strength for our team?
Heading into this last preseason game almost everyone was worried about our O-line depth with injuries to Kosier and Colombo. But even though the offense struggled in the game the O-line did a solid job of pass protecting.
Montrae Holland the team has always said they were confident in Holland as our back-up guard. All he dose is prove it every time he gets on the field. Holland could probably start for some teams in the league. He is an adequate fill in, capable of starting a full season if the team was hit with a long term injury at guard.
Alex Barron has been dinged most of camp... but we know what we have in him. He is probably the best swing back-up tackle in the league. If he can cut down on the mental mistakes he has the potential to be a very solid starter.
I have been a fan of Robert Brewster from jump! The thing I like most about him is he learns from his mistakes and shows steady improvement each game. The stunts the troubled him and Bright vs the Bengals were handled by them very well against the Chargers. I believe in the guy even though the media and most fans don't.
Although Sam Young had some problems he has been very consistent in his play. Like Colombo he is strictly a RT because he is too slow to play on the left side. He has a chance of being our RT of the future. His style of play actually reminds me of Colombo's quite a bit.
Phil Costa in my opinion has made the team. The staff loves guys that can play multiple position and Costa has played very well.
Travis Bright had a slow start but has turned it up a notch. Is it enough for him to make the 53 man roster? That might be too much to ask at this point. But I feel much better about him after the last two games then I did the first. He will have to keep playing at a high level to force the team into keeping 10 offensive linemen.
To me that is solid depth and we potentially have a guy that gets cut that can end up starting in this league at some point.
Kosier should be fine when he returns. I'm still a little concerned about Colombo but it's likely the problem he had with his knee was a lingering problem he had and kept quite.... kinda like Ratliff with his elbow problems.
All I know is I sure feel better about this group then I ever did watching guys named Procter, Berger, Martan and McQuistan flounder around on the roster for years.
It took Hudson Houck a season to get his kind of players on the team but I think we can already see some results.
I might not be ready to call the line a strength just yet.... not until Davis, Groude and Colombo prove they are still the players the team hopes they are, but I certainly feel better about the depth behind them. If this group (Davis, Groude and Colombo) plays well we all will look back and and have a good laugh at how worried we were leading up to the season.
