Observations from the game

1. Dan Bailey has a good shot to be the next kicker. His kickoffs were fine. In fact, I might prefer the depth on his kicks to Buehler booming them through the endzone. Would have liked to see the rookie attempt a FG. I'm not big on first year kickers, but if the knock on this guy is his kickoffs, I didn't see a problem last night.

2. Dan Arkin played pretty well. He seemed technically sound but was overmatched by 99 a few times. He moves well, got out to the second level a couple of times and made blocks. He doesn't give up. He's just a hard nosed fighter with a mean streak. I thought Costa did OK as well, so I'm feeling better about the interior line right now.

3. If I had to pick between Josh Thomas and Alan Ball right now, I'd keep Thomas. Another gritty player. Pretty decent in coverage and not afraid of contact. +10 points for slapping Tebow around.

4. They gave Radway every chance to make it through the first cut with his extensive playing time. I'm not sure he did enough, but he's certainly intriguing.

5. Harris is a lock to make the team as the fourth receiver.

6. Felix Jones is going to put up some eye-popping stats this year if he can stay healthy. I'd like to see Murray and Choice back in the lineup, because, frankly, neither Lonyae Miller nor Phillip Tanner look ready to assume a major role in the offense.

7. Tyron Smith was unbelievably good for a rookie. I'm particularly impressed with his ability to recover from a misstep. Really great footwork. He made a couple of mistakes, but for a 20-year old rookie with only two years of significant playing time at USC, he played way beyond my expectations.

8. McGee struggled early, then got a little bit of a rhythm late. I can't understand how he handles the pass rush. Sometimes he seems to flush from the pocket before he has to, other times it's like he doesn't know it's coming. I was hoping for more progress from him, but I'm not totally displeased.

9. Chapas isn't beating Gronk out unless he gets a lot better. Too unsure of himself at this point and not athletic enough in the passing game. I'd rather keep Rucker as a 4th TE than either of them, though.

10. Among the bottom of the OL depth chart, I was surprised to see Parnell taking second team reps at left tackle. He didn't make any glaring errors, but he plays a little too high in his stance for my liking. I'm not sure if the order of the rotation means that Parnell is ahead of Young or if they just wanted to take a longer look at Parnell. Nothing else really stood out to me. Letuli was mediocre, and I thought Kowalski got pushed around a little in his limited playing time. I didn't watch Nagy very closely.

I was thinking the same thing about Rucker.

Maybe use Phillips as the H Back/FB when necessary and keep Rucker as the 4th TE.

He seems to be another TE with good athleticism.

We can always put one of the FBs on the PS in case we need them.

Absolutely thrilled with Smith. But perhaps my expectations were just low. Arkin needs a year of strength training and he'll be fine. Worries me a bit for this year though.

I though Smith played well for a 20-year old rook starting his first NFL game. He looks like he relies on his athleticism some, though, instead of always applying good technique.

Totally agree with this. I think Arkin will look much better when he starts playing alongside Gurode. I hope he doesn't have to start this season, but if he does, he should be vastly improved with Gurode. The Detroit game could get ugly though!

Agreed with all the notes. Especially Bailey. He was more than fine on kick offs.
Buehler made his lone 42 yard attempt but it looked to have missed from the bad angle they showed on the telecast. Assuming it was good but not by much.

Lonyae Miller didn't look like much of a runner and Tanner didn't look like much of a blocker. But I expect Choice is gone regardless. Our 3rd RB has to help on special teams and not mope around about it. He has to hold off our young backs but also anyone cut anywhere else and I don't think JG really wants to fool with him tbh.

The young OL looked like a major rework. Much quicker with better technique but no here near the raw power of the old monster line. Glad they got so much game time. The screens look to be a nasty weapon with those quicker OL.

Felix does look to have that pop to his game again.

The secondary is still scary. Hopefully Elam can get Sensabaugh going and those two firm up the back line but it was poor again last night.

Nobody is freaking out over the missed PAT?

I stumbled into the twilight zone.

What happened with the missed extra point? Who missed it? I wasn't watching.

Why would anyone freak out? It was an awful snap by a backup deep snapper who has no chance of making the roster.

fell asleep before that happened; was it a shank or a bad snap?

I thought he missed it too. I was surprised when the refs raised their arms.

Ditto for me - I replayed it a couple of times and still thought he missed it. I guess the angle wasn't exactly even with the upright so that could be a little misleading, but I really thought he missed it.

Bad snap holder never got the ball down and had to fall on it.

After watching last night, how can we even afford to let Choice go? There are still a few weeks remaining to see how this develops but based on what i saw I'd hold on to Choice. Besides I thought we drafted Murray to help on STs???

Agree with those who thought Buehler missed that first FG... I was shocked when they called it good. In fact, I kept thinking they were up 3-0 that whole first quarter. :)

The big thing I was watching were the rookie linemen. Overall I liked what i saw. Arkin particularly seemed to do a good job putting his body on somebody and being in position, and he fought until the whistle, Ocassionally had a tough time holding his ground with a strong D-lineman. Smith's atleticism was very apparent. He did get fooled and take a wrong step and/or whiff at people a few times, but he's learning. Clearly he is physically capable of the job. OT is on a little more of an island than OG, so it's understandable that he took a few more misspteps in his 1st game than Arkin.

'fell asleep'?

During a Cowboys preseason game?

Hang your head in shame!
