Off Season Priorities

#1 - Priority Number 1 like signing Doug Free last year, but hopefully with better results, is the resigning of Laurent Robinson. I think it would be a mistake to lose the chemistry that Robinson and Romo have. Hopefully he signs a deal that is manageable.

I think with Martellus Bennett being a free agent, it's officially time for the "2 TE formation" idea to die out in Dallas. Let them have it here in New England. We have much better wide receivers than they do, and no one believes in Dez Bryant more than I do. I also expect Miles Austin to come on strong next year.

#2 - Priority #2 is fixing the secondary. Most people think this only means replacing Terence Newman but that is a misnomer. The secondary needs to be and should be nearly entirely re-hauled. It's time for wholesale changes back there. I wish we could get rid of any not named Mike Jenkins. I wouldn't even resign Mike Jenkins when the time comes since he is so injury prone, but the Frank Walkers, Alan Balls... they should all be gone. This has been our Achilles heel for TWO straight years. And much like our other Achilles heel (our offensive line), we ignored the problem for too long.

It's going to take the draft and free agency to fix the secondary. It's good to hear Rob Ryan suggest the only thing he cares about is defensive backs.

Some people

#3 - Priority #3 is finishing the touches on this offensive line. Make it a STRENGTH instead of a weakness. If you give Romo the same offensive line that Drew Brees and Tom Brady get, you add ability to extend plays, and you combine that with our talent positions... there is no reason we should end the year 11th in points with only FIVE rushing touchdowns... 2nd worst in the nfl...

I don't think we're as far as some people might suggest that we are. We're a team that has some glaring holes, but we also have a lot of strengths, and youth at positions that will continue to grow and develop into strengths.

Our secondary is probably our biggest weakness, but is it any worse than the Giants, Patriots, Packers, or Saints secondaries? The Packers nearly went undefeated with their terrible secondary, and that's because they were unstoppable on offense for the greater part of the year. Augmenting our offense with a great offensive line is probably the most important thing we can do. Which is contradictory for me to say since I listed it as the 3rd priority, but these are really flexible, and a lot of it depends on what we do at certain positions.

I would like to see another home grown offensive linemen develop through Woicik, even if his strength program is abbreviated.

#4 - The last priority I think is finally adding in that road grading nose tackle, and moving Ratliff out to defensive end. It increases our ability to stop the run, and adds a pass rush threat more on the edge. This should really help our linebackers make more plays.

1) this team has WAY more issues than any GOOD GM could fix in one season.

2)Jerrah isn't a real GM and has NO idea what he's doing.....:bang2:

Never heard that before.... There are approximately 13 other teams that have gms who finished worse then us this year.

Fix the interior O-Line and get Ware some consistent pass rush help and you have fixed the two biggest, most glaring, weakenesses of this team.

Bingo....every team has holes...the Cowboys can be a far better team by fixing those two things. Also having trouble believing secondary is second biggest priority when the Giants lost two of their best corners and the Pats played with waiver claims and wr's in the secondary.

We have a a lot of holes right now so we need to be looking for quick fixes.

1. We need more pass rushers.

2. Better overall OL play.

3. At least 1 safety that can knock a pass down and erase someones mistake.

Definately need to rework the secondary, as much as possible, but a far better, consistent, pass rush will go a long way to helping the secondary.

Get the pass rush where it needs to be first and the secondary will begin to follow suit as well.

......I respect your knowledge Catch....you've been on here a LONG time but know this: the fact we have "a lot of holes" means we need to NOT look for quick fixes: this has gotten goofball jones in trouble ever season since Johnson left: he's constantly trying to reload instead of rebuild. As others have said in this thread, he just can't see fit to draft and sign interior linemen on a consistent basis. It's the salesman in him: he's petrified that cavernous stadium will be half full and he'll lose money.

Sure, he took Smith last year and I LOVE the kid, but look at the rest of the line he plays next to: it is brutal. AS for the dline: it's worse than the oline: 2 players in Ware and Rat who are getting older and NOTHING else.....:bang2:

I like your idea. personally I'd go after Miami NT (Soliai spelling im sure) as a free agent also. I'd grab a NT,C,CB and Safety in FA other then Robinson and prolly Spencer. That gives you G,CB,TE and a pass rush specialist in the draft that we need to get. I don't think thats out of the question. If we sure up the o-line and pass rush then we're as good as anybody in the NFL imo.

Always a Jerry homer coming to his lame defense. I dont know who the 13 other teams are but have they won just one playoff game in last 17 years ?
I think we are in a pretty short list of 2 or 3 teams for that stat. Yah, Jerry as GM is a real "strength" of ours.

This team was a few plays away from being in the playoffs. I do believe we can use help on the oline, in the secondary, another rushing LB and d-line. Some I think are already on the team but most will come via draft or FA.

Garrett is a first time HC and didn't get a chance to really put HIS stamp on the team. Then he had a first year DC as well. Not having an offseason hurt too. I think with a FULL offseason, this team will be different. They are going to let go of players that don't fit what Garrett is trying to do. IMO they did pretty good under the circumstances. They were pretty much better than the bad teams but not in the same league as the better teams. Both teams in the Superbowl had teams that had been together a while and HC's that have been with their respective team a few years. The Boys are rebuilding and it just may take more than an offseason to get things fixed.

Too many holes on this Cowboy team to fix in one offseason, Dallas will probably finish third in the division next year behind the Giants and the Eagles, and out of the playoffs

No not at all, just pointing out, hiring a GM does nothing for the team. The players have to execute and the coaches have to game-plan. If we have another draft like last year we will be sitting in a very nice place.

Jerry Jones doesn't draft just random players - he follows his scouts advice and takes his pick. I honestly don't think he has done a by job the last couple of years.

Everyone was calling for Sean Lee's head last year when he wasn't doing as well as he should of, calling Jerry Jones an idiot for wasting a pick on an injured player. Fans think they know everything and of course Jerry Jones has had some duds in his career, but the man wants to win so he is going to try to put the best team on the field.

priorities in order:

what our administration is likely to do:

What fans need to do this off-season is realize that it isn't a quick fix, and that it's likely going to take at least one more off-season to get into that category of being ready to go.

This year, I want to see the offensive line and secondary addressed because of the talent pool in the draft. We have a chance to virtually fix those to units this off-season to the point that they're strengths on the team (outside of the FS position).

We need to maybe add one guy if we can upgrade along the DL this off-season, but otherwise look to make those improvements to the front 7 in the 2012 off-season. A great secondary will mask a lot of the problems from the front 7, and vice versa. This year we need to look secondary and offensive line.

i dont agree

there are plenty of resources likely to be available in FA and the draft that can seriously upgrade our front 7

given a choice i upgrade OL and front 7

We should've won the division this year when everyone was picking us to be 3rd.

The year away thing is an excuse. We better be ready next year.

We completely gutted our offensive line aside from our tackles and we went into the season with "its better than nothing" in the secondary.

We also gutted the roster of a lot of bad attitudes and driftwood. If you fail to see that this is not a "just add water" scenario for long term success, then you're simply out of touch with reality.
