Three of the top 4 scoring offenses are in the Conference Championships (Rams, Chiefs and Pats) and the top 4 scoring defenses in the playoffs are at home (Cowboys, Ravens, Texans and the Bears). It looks like you will need to be able to consistently score 30 points or more to win the Super Bowl in this day and age.

The teams that consistently scored in the regular season did so yesterday and today so far. Offensively we scores closed to what we averaged on the year and so did the Rams, we lost this game because we couldn't dictate pace offensively. The Rams did a good job doing what we like to do, run the ball, chew up clock and wear down the defense.

Offensively, even though we couldn't run the ball, we still managed to control the clock almost as well as we did in the regular season. We lost because the defense get itself off the field.

TOP per drive
OFFENSE
season 3:07
last night 2:58

DEFENSE
season 2:52
last night 4:01

We scored 2.75 points per drive, which was a lot better than our season average of 2.03. The defense allowed the Rams 3.75 points per drive, which was way above the Rams' season average of 2.79.

Our offense struggled most of the year. It was going to come back to bite us, when the defense couldn't perform up to expectations.
What the offense did most of the year had no effect on last night's game though.

The defense got this team into the playoffs, and last night that same defense got this team knocked out of the playoffs.

When the defense struggles, the offense needs to help them out by sustaining drives and scoring points. They didn't do it, or at least enough of it. One could predict from our season that if the Rams were going to score their points, we would likely fall short.

That's misleading for a couple of reasons. First, "score their points" implies that the Rams just "did what the Rams do." In reality, the Rams scored 25% more points on their average drive than they did during the regular season. They outdid even themselves.

Second, "we would likely fall short" hides the fact that the offense actually scored 25% more points on its average drive that it did during the regular season.

In other words, you're sweeping a lot under the rug.

Of course it is. The NFL has changed the rules to favor offense. It's the future of the nfl. Offense, offense offense. Fantasy Football= $$$$_

Yeah, stats man I am. So what? Our offense just did not keep up with the Rams last night. Is that fair? Of course you can blame that on the defense, but we had only 7 points in the first half. My lying eyes tell me the offense was a part of the problem too, yesterday.

shhhhhhhhhh

It takes both.

And don't overlook the contributions of the Rams, Saints, Pats, and KC on D. All of those teams' D's played a huge role in their wins.

Like all good things in life, it's about balance. As Parcells would say, you need production from all 3 phases of the game to win consistently.

And control the LOS w/ their D.

the rule changes made this happen. No longer defense wins championships. They want offensive shootouts.

Offense is winning in these playoffs. But I would add an even bigger truth- Excellent Coaching is always huge in the playoffs.
I would say balance. The winning teams all had a good D performance to go w/ their O performance.

Agree wholeheartedly about coaching.

But i would like to have a defense that forces turnovers and a top offense then a bend but don't break defense that doesn't force turnovers and a struggling one dimensional offense.
