Most teams tend to shift their overall direction with each new head coaching hire. If they come from an offensive philosophy, the next move is often defensive-minded — and vice versa.

Meanwhile, Dallas has stayed on the offensive side of the ball for its last three head coaching hires: Garrett, McCarthy, and now Schottenheimer.

At some point, you have to ask whether that continuity in offensive leadership has come at the expense of defensive identity. Has this approach contributed to a decline in defensive talent, development, and overall performance?

When your head coach’s background is consistently offense-focused, the defensive side of the ball inevitably becomes more dependent on coordinators — and we’ve seen what happens when those hires 'miss'.

At some point, it’s worth asking if those things are connected.

NFL rules favor scoring. Offensive coaching most develop and support QB. But disregard of defense losses a team games.

32 years between taking a DT in the 1st round of the draft speaks volumes.

We need to start picking safeties higher. I believe the last time we used a 1st or 2nd rounder on a safety was when we drafted Roy Williams in the 1st round in 2002. We haven't picked a safety in round 2 in over 20 years. Crazy right?

Why?

Its simple. Offense sells. Scoring sells. There is higher jersey sales for offense. Cha ching

So Jerry keeps investing into offensive side of the ball. Hoping some magic happens and they are average. Every so many years he makes all the wrong moves and proverbial shirt hits the fan. Then he does a one year adjustment and then business as usual.

Don't for one moment think this defensive focus is long term. Next year if we are in the middle to 20 range Jerry will be back at it. Guaranteed

All that offense yet not one day 1 or day 2 pick spent on the most important position on the field.

This is it 100% Offense puts buns in seats. Period.

This topic has been broached on the Ticket and elsewhere. Every year there seems to be trends..,.,RBs hot, Ds hot, etc. They got for a few years and switch. We basically are stuck behind them. One of the guys was talking about maybe the blind squirrel finds a nut and the next one is 2 top WRs but I doubt it. What it really comes down to though is Jerry can never do 2 things...1) a full rebuild and 2) not invest in the offense. They offense sells even if we are hovering around .500

In yet, 3 of the 4 teams in the championship games pride on defense and both SB teams, Defense.

And this is why Jerry will sign Pickens to a huge deal because Dak said so. And one of our 1st will go on the offense as Jerry always does

I think it’s easier to get a DC and hire someone who can be creative and spread the offense out max out a QB capabilities as your HC . Brady and the Raiders were smart to hire Kubiak with top pick expected to be a QB . Stefanski can possibly juice up Atlanta offense .

MM in Pittsburgh . Ben Johnson Bears looks like a whole new franchise . Canales a few years ago in Carolina Bryce Young seems to be improving .

I really liked what I saw out of this Dallas offense in 2025 it was the defense that was pure garbage . So far I see Dallas recognizing the problem and trying to fix it in the off-season . The draft and FA is next .

Defense has suffered because of front office moves. We have failed to fill out the roster well on that side of the ball. Misses like Taco Charlton, Mazi Smith and several others have hurt those efforts, especially with our cheap approach to free agency.

I will be surprised if both of our firsts aren't used on defense. Signing Javonte and Pickens allows us to keep last year's offense intact and focus on defense in the draft. Cheap free agency also will be focused on defense as we had some placeholders.

Jalen Thompson at safety Arizona and Boye Mafe Edge Seattle should be front office focus defensive help FA. They start day one young vets .

I’ve always believed in defense. We’ve all heard the saying that defense wins championships, and there’s truth to it. If the Cowboys want to bring home another title, it has to start with investing on the defensive side of the ball.

Just look at the Seahawks and Patriots. Both teams were built around tough, disciplined defenses, and that’s exactly how they made it to the Super Bowl. If we want to get back to that level, defense has to be a priority.

Because mediocrity sells.

Jerry doesn't care about super bowls. He's gone out of his way to prove it to you.
