Truth be told, now that we are 50 Superbowls in I think it's safe to say there are all sorts of viable ways to win a Championship.

Plenty of examples of great defenses winning with poor offenses.
Plenty of examples (although less of them I think) of great offenses with poor defenses
Everything in between

Going back over the past 15-16 years, I'm not sure the 2000 Ravens (Dilfer), 2002 Bucs (Brad Johnson), 2015 Broncos (old Manning) fit into that category.

If the number one Defense makes it to the Super Bowl they 7-1 since 1985 with last year's SEA being a yard away. The Cowboys of 1992 were one of the 7.

You have to have a good QB and good passing game to win the Super Bowl. You also have to be good at defending the pass. There's plenty of ways to do it. The Saints defense wasn't exactly lights out when they won it. But, when you can build giant leads and score at will, it makes the defense's job easier.

What we need is a more consistent defense. We seem to have a defense that tends to play very well on the road...of all things...and then struggle at home. Then we will have some years where they are good at home, but poor on the road. Or a defense that starts out well, but struggles in the second half of the season or plays well in the first 3 quarters and wilts in the 4th quarter. Just no real consistency.

The defense needs to become great at the basics. It needs to tackle much better. It needs a better last line of defense (safeties) and it needs to be able to play both man and zone well. Once we get these basics down, then we can look to add the bells and whistles and add those key parts to make the defense run high octane. Otherwise we will still have the same inconsistencies and find ways to lose instead of finding ways to win.

Unless your team has a dominant defense.

Cam Newton was the nfl MVP but Denver made him look like Brandon Weeden. And Peyton Manning is a first ballot HOFer, but he is nowhere near an "exceptional talent" anymore, especially against a D as good as Carolina's.

Wade's Broncos D is on par with Buddy's Bears, Kiffin's Bucs, 2000 Ravens, Steel Curtain, Doomsday and Jimmy's Cowboys. Half these teams won it all without a stud QB or even much of an offense. But ALL had elite defenses.

I'm so tired of the defense wins championships narrative.

Also, we can bury the "no team can win after paying a number one receiver" discussion. Thomas is paid as a number one wideout.
