Offense still troubling

We know what we have on defense; 2 healthy starters on front seven + backups and guys off the street, all playing their guts out. Tons of guys in the secondary who weren't even on the team getting lots of playing time.

Yet the offense, despite putting up a great performance the final 4:50 struggled mightily against a lowly ranked defense. The patchwork D got several stops at 17-17, but the offense was putrid.

Did the final 4:50 bring back the discussion that the offense was at its best in the hurry up without JG calling plays?

?

You might want to mention this to Risen Star. He's convinced himself the offense played well while the defense pulled a no show.

I agree with you, the offense was pretty lousy given what they were up against.

When you only gain 40 yards against the worst ranked run defense in the league, it tells you all you need to know about the OL

The defense was a no-show, but at least they have an excuse. We're playing several players that are the equilavent to college basketball walk-ons on defense due to injuries. We lack talent there right now with so many out. The offense sputtered for the most part of three and a half quarters minus two long TD passes. Everyone knew our defense wasn't going to be able to contain N.O.'s offense, but our offense should've shown up more than they did despite the statistics.

How much pressure did Romo face?

Well, not exactly.

We couldn't stop Brees either. Tough to stay committed to the run when you're playing catchup.

The O-Line certainly needs to be fixed, but we need to get entirely better at safety.

Actually, it says more about the execution of the plays. If the defense is that bad, it shouldn't matter what plays you call, as long as they're executed well.

Inexplicably Dez didn't get a ball thrown to him in third quarter.

The troubling part is that in 2013:

The defense is returning healthy (hopefully) versions of:

DeMarcus Ware
Jay Ratliff
Sean Lee
Bruce Carter
Barry Church
Orlando Scandrick
Possibly Kenyon Coleman
Matt Johnson
Ben Bass
Orie Lemon
Caleb McSurdy
Donavon Kemp

The offensive is returning healthy versions of:
Phil Costa

Those top 5 guys you've highlighted coming back to the defense next year:

Ware and Ratliff are starting to show major signs of wear and tear.

Lee and Carter are awesome when on the field, however, both have major injury questions hanging over their heads.

Church has exactly 2 starts in his career and was already considered borderline too slow to start in the NFL and is coming off a achilles tear.

The Cowboys absolutely CANNOT just stick their heads in the sand and hope that all 5 of those guys come back and pick up and play All Pro ball.

Where I get frustrated is on third down plays, they try these low percentage plays down the side line instead of something to get the first down with a higher percentage of being completed.

I think the offense is playing like most of us expected going into the season, if not better. As others have pointed out, they haven't had the injuries that the defense sustained during the season. They also didn't have the offseason upgrades that the defense was given. Just one of those things--they focused on building up the D in the offseason and then the D was decimated. It happens. The offense was middle of the pack in points last year and held below 20 points six times IIRC. We hoped the defense could compensate for the weaknesses on offense but recently injuries have prevented that from happening. It is what it is. Even the top offenses are going to have lulls, and I don't think any of us were expecting Dallas' offense to be elite.

I think a lot of that lies with Romo. It just seems like he always wants to hit the home run.

Perhaps, he's overcompensating sometimes for a terrible OL and running game?

On the last possession, for instance, on third down he threw into tight, double coverage to Witten when he had a wide open Murray in the flats. Fortunately, we converted on 4th down.

I know you take the good with the bad with Romo, but sometimes I wish he'd take the gimme.

For the record, Garrett still calls the plays into Romo's helmet during the no huddle hurry up offense...

when we pass the ball over the middle we are successful. When we go to the sideline like we did in the 3rd quarter we don't do well.

Sometimes the only thin we have in the middle is Witten.

worse defense in the NFL

I believe last in sacks

so in this game its not like the O line had a hard task

They still could not get much going as regards the rush
