Offensive Efficiency

in 2019 the Cowboys offensive was a top offense based on the stats. Even in scoring the cowboys scored the 9th most TD's in the league. Yet as pretty much every fan knows, our offense still stunk. Most of the TD's were scored on bad teams, and we far too often settled for FG's against the better teams. But i was rather curious about how we compared to other teams. So i did a simple stat calculation for what i feel is the best way to describe how effective an offense is. In my mind, it doesn't matter how many yards you throw, or how many TD's you score, if you have to work for every single one. So i did a simple look to see how many TD's were scored versus how many scrimmage plays were run. I think the true sign of a top offense is less about how many yards you have, or how many TD's you can get, but how effective you are getting those TD's. Great offenses that play bad defenses should be lighting them up, and the better defenses might make you work, but there should still be points on the board. So i took the better offenses last year and compared to the cowboys and the results aren't surprising.

Ravens - 64 TD's on 1064 plays - A TD every 16.625 plays
Chiefs - 50 TD's on 976 plays - A TD every 19.52 plays
49er's - 56 TD's on 1012 plays - A TD every 18.071 plays
Saints - 52 TD's on 1011 plays A TD every 19.44 plays

The cowboys? 49 TD's on 1069 plays - a TD every 21.82 plays. We used more plays then all of these top offenses yet we scored less TD's.

Combined with our lackluster defense in too many games, its not surprising we went 8-8. I dont expect some major jump in defensive rankings, nor would i be upset if there isn't. If we can just improve our efficiency on offense, we could easily gain 3-4 wins if the defensive plays just average. I think the big key for our team this year is not what happens on the defense, but instead how efficient we are on the offense.

I’d be curious to know the breakdown between running and passing plays. I may wrongly assume every team is pretty close to each other or are there significant differences between some of the teams you mentioned.

I didn’t watch as many games last year without the NFL package but it seems like SF would be more run heavy and KC more pass heavy. I’d guess the Saints, Dallas and Baltimore are more even. No idea though, maybe you have access to those stats from wherever you got the info above?

The offense was actually tied for 5th in the league averaging 3.0 offensive tds a game. How many tds did our defense and special teams contribute?

Our ST had us starting drives from a long way off. Lol. We moved the ball a lot of yards. Better ST and a Defense that can get us short fields will give us more opportunities to scores

49ers 498 rushing attempts / 478 Passing attempts and 36 sacks
Chiefs 375 rushing attempts / 576 passing attempts and 25 sacks
Cowboys 449 rushing attempts / 597 passing attempts and 23 sacks
Ravens 596 rushing attempts / 440 passing attempts and 28 sacks
Saints 405 rushing attempts / 581 passing attempts and 25 sacks

Total tds not offensive. We had 48 offensive tds last year. 30 passing 18 rushing. Had only one touchdown from special teams or defense it was a fumble recovery returned by JLew. Our offense actually had more offensive touchdowns than KC. But they had contributions from the other 2 aspects of the game

You are right for whatever reason the site I was using combined all TDs instead of doing just offensive tDs like I asked for. ‍ We still need to do better.

Ummmmm ok lets make the huge leap from 2nd in offensive officiency to 1st. Or maybe our defense can make the leap from 19th or special teams from 30th.

Special teams from 30th definitely. But we still can get better on offense.

In all 8 wins we scored more than 30 points

In 4 of our losses we scored 15 or less

In the other 4 we scored 22, 24(X3)

So in only really 3 of our losses could you realistically blame the defense
