Offensive Line Projections

Good point on Peter Konz. I forgot about him.

I think he becomes the automatic starter at Center if drafted.

I'm starting to get a feeling we'll trade down into the 20s with Konz as a target. Not saying that's what I would do, but I'm beginning to think that could be the plan based on the FA acquisitions.

Of course, we also still need a pass rusher.

Just a quick thread on some observations based on free agency...

I feel as if the offensive line for 2012 can go one of three ways, based on what occurs in the draft next month. The team obviously likes Philip Blake, and I think his selection will determine what happens. Either way, I think we get Glenn or DeCastro in round 1.

Scenario 1:

LT - Tyron Smith
LG - MacKenzie Bernadeau
OC - Philip Blake
RG - David DeCastro/Cordy Glenn
RT - Doug Free

In Scenario 2, Philip Blake is not there. I think we see this to start:

LT - Tyron Smith
LG - Nate Livings
OC - MacKenzie Bernadeau
RG - David DeCastro/Cordy Glenn
RT - Doug Free

And Scenario 3 is what nobody wants to see - DeCastro and Glenn being gone:

LT - Tyron Smith
LG - Nate Livings
OC - Phil Costa
RG - MacKenzie Bernadeau
RT - Doug Free

Thoughts, Comments, Concerns, Zoners? Also, would love to have someone in the know chime in (CS, SDogo, etc.)

Scenario 1 is easily the best case.

Not with his medical history they won't

I think we're all going to be surprised how many starters come from the Costa/Kowalski/Nagy/Arkin group.

I have not seen his medical history brought up as an issue. Of course, that's with draft gurus; the teams that examined him might feel differently.

Anyway, don't you know by now that we liked to draft players with medical issues?

We can still do alot with the draft, people need to stop freaking out because we signed two back up OGs. The draft is deep with OGs and the team le\ikes Arkin and Nagy,Killa, and Costa are good backups. We will get one starter in the draft. Many many options we can do.

I think the best man wins at center between Costa, Kowalski, and Nagy. You'd have to say that Costa has a leg up on the field at this point too.

LG is Livings. RG is Bernadeau. Those guys were brought here to start, and that is exactly what they will do.

Taking a guard at #14 seems like a colossal waste of resource. If we want a top guard, trade down and take the next one on the board.

Overkill taking one at 14.

I don't see us taking a G at 14 but if he's the BPA then he should be taken. Look for a passrusher here or DL.

If he lives that long.

Parnell is the swing OT, Bernadeau swing interior guy.
Kowalski makes team as 8th OL.

I think it is more than bananas to start projecting potential draftees into the lineup.

I can assure you the Boys front office isn't doing so.

I think there are about 8 guards who will be available in the first 4 rounds who will be rated above their draft position. It is certainly not DeCastro/Glenn or bust.

Hmm this peaks my interest. I can see us trading down from 14 to save some cap space and to bring in some meat and potatoes on both lines...:D

After seeing free agency, I don't think the Cowboys will draft DeCastro unless they are stuck at 14 and all their defensive line targets are gone. I think Coples, Cox, and Brockers will be rated high (by Dallas) and be rated close to DeCastro. Bucky Brooks (NFL.com) did a new mock and mocked Quinton Coples to Dallas at 14. I think a defensive lineman will probably fall to Dallas at 14, and even though it is a very risky position to draft in round 1, the Cowboys need a young, impact player in their defensive line, bad.

I think Mackenzy Bernadeau (26) projects to start at LG if all goes according to plan for the Cowboys. I think Bernadeau has more upside than Kyle Kosier ever had due to his added elements of power and size, and I think the Cowboys have high hopes for him, imo. I think he's a left side player and the pulling guard from the weak side.

On the other hand, I see Nate Livings as a short-term stop gap at RG, imo. As a result, I think the second round targets at guard should be Zeitler, Silatolu, and my favorite, Brandon Brooks. I think Zeitler and Brooks make a ton of sense, in round 2, because they are right side players. I don't think signing Livings would prevent the Cowboys from drafting Zeitler or Brooks in round 2. Bill Callahan was at Brandon Brooks' pro day according to SDogo, and Callahan has recently worked out both Wisconsin interior players according to SI.com (Tony Pauline). I think the Steelers would jump all over Brooks in round 2, and there are probably other teams, too. I think Dallas should be one of those teams. The Livings signing looks better, imo, if Zeitler or Brooks are drafted. That is where the interior value should be, I think. (pick 45 and at guard) However, teams in the late first could spoil it, because the Ravens and Packers need interior o-line help.

At center, Konz, Blake, and Ben Jones are probably the targets. If Konz is available in round 2, he has great value. However, I like Brandon Brooks better than all the centers. jmo

I think the Cowboys can for sure get a young, quality (plus) RG in the second round, but center is still a big question mark, imo.

I will whine like a baby if we don't get DeCastro. Look at the success of the Tyron pick last year...

What does one have to do with the other?

Well I agree with alot of that. I figure Zeitler will be gone, but Brooks would be a great pick in the 2nd if there. Fits what we want out of lineman, and if he is there, could be the pick.

BTW, if Couples is there we should do backflips, and he could fall cause some people might get more mixed up in his combine than his true ability.

I seriously doubt we draft Cordy. I think he is too fat. I also think we are going to draft a pass rusher instead of a guard at #14.

I predict something like this based on FA investment.

  • RT: Free
  • RG: Living
  • C: Nagy
  • LG: Bernadeau
  • LT: Smith

What I think should probably happen

  • RT: Free
  • RG: Living
  • C: Kowalski
  • LG: Nagy
  • LT: Smith

What I would like to happen if/when Arkin is ready. (he wasn't strong enough last year)

  • RT: Free
  • RG: Arkin
  • C: Kowalski
  • LG: Nagy
  • LT: Smith

I honestly can't figure out why they signed Living and Bernadeau to such long term contracts. Neither have proven to be a quality player thus far in their careers.

I think Livings is slated to play LG, that's where he played for the bengals and that also puts a veteran next to Tyron Smith who is playing LT fulltime for the first time in his career.

I agree. Unless Livings falls flat in camp, he's definitely starting. I understand that's not the popular choice around here but IMO it's apparent what they expect from him. He got a similar contract to the much coveted Evan Mathis. It's definitely starter's money. As you mentioned, he's likely slated to start at LG. I believe the remaining two spots will be up for grabs.

LT - Smith
LG - Livings
C - Costa, Arkin, Kowalski, possible high draft pick
RG - Bernadau, Nagy, possible high draft pick
RT - Free

Parnell is the swing tackle.

My preference for this year:

RT: Free
RG: Brandon Brooks/Zeitler
C: Kowalski
LG: Bernadeau
LT: Tyron Smith
