"The job being done by NFL referees is constantly under scrutiny and under the microscope. Usually after the game, fans and analysts alike sit there and dissect the missed calls, the outright blown calls, and the major issues they see. "

My take on what should be happening with NFL referees. Im sick of them, and how badly the games have been officiated all season.

I'll be the first to say that refereeing any sport is not easy, especially not at the professional level. But football is particularly tough because there are so many players you have to watch on every single play.

With that said, sometimes I wonder where they find these guys who officiates some of these NFL games. I feel like my grandma could referee better than some of them.

Maybe there has to be emphasis on calling only "obvious" infractions and letting tick tack penalties go. I can't recall these many infractions be in called 10-20 years ago aND I'm sure they were going on.

But I know the rule changes dictate whats being called and the NFL wants offense, but there is no flow to the games any more....every time a pass is made or a ball returned I expect a penalty....

I also feel like the holding calls on offense for any team are just pointless at this point, they literally let go of so much, and yet call minor holding. Its weird

Doesn't matter, they will still find a way to screw us over.
NFL officials are more protected than the president is.

I have gotten the feeling the refs don't want to "look" like they are giving the Cowboys any breaks because of all the blow back from the end of the Lions game last year.

Even though there was an obvious face mask missed on the play that is glossed over when trying to fit the lions were screwed narrative that has been fed to the average mouth breathing football fan.

It's unwatchable alot of the time.

These officials and their bosses are a joke who decides games every week. Some of them actually think that the fans pay to come see them trot out there and control the game with thier horrible calls.

I really wish that the NFL would shake things up and fire every single one of them and hire younger, more capable people. Why not hire ex college athletes that are young, in need of a job and can actually be able to do the job.

You're right. But if Blandino is at the top of the heap, what good does any of that do? He must go more than anyone else.

Human error is always going to be part of officiating just like with everything in life and it's silly to continue complaining about it. Most of the calls are judgement calls made by human beings and no call no matter how correct it is will please everyone. Calls are going to be missed it's a tough job with plays happening bang bang. Players are moving so fast not even slo mo HD freeze frame replay can determine with 100% certainty some of these calls. The NFL is working constantly to get calls right and the system we have today is a lot better than years ago before replay was allowed to change calls. Calls can be challenged and two sets of eyes are looking at the plays on replay.

Mistakes will happen and continue to happen because there's too much involved with some of the rules like the catch rule and judgement has to be used. We've seen a lot of calls where some experts agree with the call and some don't because not everyone sees things the same way. Too many fans are caught up with officiating I've never been one of them. Some of you drive yourselves nuts with the officiating and use it as excuses claiming there's a conspiracy against the Cowboys. LOL Every team in the league has to deal with missed calls that's always been part of the game and always will.

Officiating is a thankless job half the country is going to love a call while the other half is going to hate it. If a call goes in favor of your team it's a great call even if it's a bad call. FANS boo even the most obvious calls if they go against their team. Every Cowboy FAN in America hates Dean Blandino but Packer fans love him. Would hate to have a job where you make a call that has half the country jumping for joy and the other half cursing it with some out there wanting to kill you.

How about this - why is it that guys who make it on the field of an NFL game are at the very peak of physical and mental ability. Reflexes, speed, strength, etc. Yet the men who have to make judgements on their play are 40's & 50's. They'll say experience but I say B.S.

Full time refs - with an age limit - who know the rule book cold - and who spend entire off seasons watching tape and working with teams at OTA's and training camps.

I'm pretty sure Packer fans don't love Blandino or are happy with the officials. I think they breathed a sigh of relief that a close call went their way. They took it and got out of dodge - knowing full well they could be on the other end of it next time.

It needs to become a topic for the mainstream media. Until the fans via the media put more pressure on the NFL, nothing will happen.

I don't think most people realize that at the heart of the problem is for lack of a better word, the politics behind the scenes. The refs union makes changes difficult. They do a lot of things just directed at protecting their job and their industry. They've always resisted technology which is why the replay rules have evolved in a odd way. They resist a disciplinary system with any teeth in it, again to protect themselves. They have a very large sense of arrogance and entitlement that almost rivals the Wade Phillips era Cowboys.

The NFL has ended up with odd workarounds. The booth officials as we found out were not in the union; however, they seem to be intimidated by the on field refs who it appears are from an employment standpoint are at higher level than them.

The NFL has Blandino who was never a ref in his life as their "boss" because the NFL wanted someone that was not the the "clique" with the refs but he has just turned out to be an idiot whose primary job is to go around explaining why certain call were made.

It is unfortunate that the NFL didn't just break the union and stay with college refs. I'm convinced those refs would have been as good as the regular refs by the 2nd season and would eventually be able to exceed them without all the nonsense involved with a union.

If you don't know, any dealings with unions are very difficult and their only reason for existence is to improve the personal lives of their members, not to improve their industry. Union are the reason that Detroit is a ghost town. Car companies just moved away to get away from unions that were impossible to deal with. The unions in the industry were also a big part of the rise of the import autos back in the last seventies. It was difficult in the late seventies to make cars when at guy whose only job was to install the battery was making $25 dollars per hour at a time the minimum wage was below $5 per hour. Unions were terrific when they first came into existence, before the government really put any controls on industry, but they've evolved to just lower lower product quality.

One thing we know for sure Packer fans didn't spend the entire off-season ripping Blandino. Being an official or having anything to do with the officiating is a thankless job. I sympathize with them because it's a tough job. If you go out and play a solid mistake free game officiating isn't going to determine the outcome. Solid play and knowing the rules can avoid having a game come down to an officials call.

The league needs to go into the rulebook and toss about half of it. Too many rules = too many penalties.

Some are so caught up with the officiating they worry about which crew is going to do Cowboy games each week. A thread was started once with a FAN in a panic over the crew that was going to do the Cowboys game. LOL They insisted that particular crew had it in for the Cowboys.

I hate the 10 yard penalty and loss of play on a holding call. It almost always kills the drive and it can be called on every play. I find it especially annoying when it's not a hold that had an effect on the play. It's too steep a price for such a common penalty.
