We seem to have a thread after every game about it and things never seem to change for the better. So the question is how can it get better?

The biggest complaints seem to be:

Too many rules

Too much emphasis on safety

Too much inconsistency on calls in games

No consistency in calls from one crew to the next

What appears to be bias against players/teams

To me, as someone who has officiated basketball for 20 years, the main issue is a lack of understanding of the grey areas of the rules. You have the obvious infractions and then you have the plays that require the officials to apply the spirit and intent of the rule as well as advantage/disadvantage.

Until every official can see these plays with the same "eyes" we will always have these threads.

Hey can you tell the refs to stop cheating...oh...i mean can they start making the right calls on the court for Duke. Tired of seeing refs let then get away with things all game long

My major compliant is the refs make calls on us, I would much rather have them only make calls on our opponent.

Sounds like a perfect description of our legal system! Honestly, I have no idea what can be done about it. Instant replay doesn't even help all that much. There is still something called human judgement involved and we all know how inconsistent that can be. How many times has a ref gone under the hood, the announcers have said the call will clearly gone a certain way and yet the ref comes back with an interpretation that shocks everyone?

The biggest thing I think is the complexity of the rules. Its seems almost impossible for a human being to apply the complexity of some of these rules to live action that is happening at NFL speed. I actually saw a ref throw a flag for a "hit on a defenseless receiver" after the receiver had caught the ball in the Skins-Lions game! How is that possible?

I think NFL rules committee make it hard as new rules and new emphasis are thrown at the refs on a yearly basis. Since I have been watching football in the early 60's someone has complained about bad calls. These guys are human and often these plays are very close even replay can't always give a clear view in slow motion yet these men have to make the call on the spot. I think they do the best they can and the league could make it a bit easier by easing up on changing of the rules

And the refs cant see everything, You hope that it evens out for both teams by the end of the game. Or at least over the course of a season you would think that it trends to even out.

Officiating has always been bad, and they all stink.

It seems worse now because A) There are a lot more subjective rules and B) Instant replay

I actually think the officiating has been pretty good so far this year. No one game is ever going to be called perfectly, and there will always be disputed close calls, but I haven't seen any games where I felt like the officiating was so bad that it changed the outcome of the game.

I do think the NFL has screwed up the replay system a bit. There is the idea that all scoring plays and turnovers are "reviewed," but in reality a guy in the booth is making a very cursory decision about whether or not a play deserves review or not. Whatever is happening in the booth, its clear that these plays aren't getting the same level of attention up there as when a ref goes under the hood. T

Take last night's game with Earl Bennett's TD. If that was originally called a TD, the Steelers could not have challenged it; they would be at the mercy of the guy in the booth. However, because it was called incomplete, the Bears were able to challenge and get the called reversed.

That PI on 3rd down against Claiborne last week at KC. They got a first down and ran the click out, make the right call and Bailey nails the game winning FG

I think all three of our games have been called well so far.

Refs have a tough job, especially with all the constant rule changes. And it's moving fast out there.

The NBA, I'm convinced, is fixed. I hardly watch anymore because of that. Baseball strike zones are ridiculously inconsistent, but they're better. NFL refs are by far the best of the bunch.

The two most game changing penalties holding and PI are totally subjective. I've always thought if there wasn't betting on games the bias would be gone.

Most penalties are judgement calls so there's going to be some inconsistency. There is no bias against teams or players the refs are under too much scrutiny from the league and with super slow-mo HD cameras everywhere. One bad apple can bring an entire crew down.
