Keep: Morris Claiborne, Brandon Carr, David Irving, Brice Butler, Mark Sanchez, J.J. Wilcox
Some may not agree but i feel we keep our current starting cornerback duo of Mo and Carr for at least another year or 2. Mo won't be too expensive due to durability issues but he will be getting a nice pay raise. You can hate him all you want but Carr is starting material and he doesn't miss a game. He comes back on a short contract. David Irving has been a good rotational player so he is brought back to backup both DT spots. Butler is brought back to compete for the #2 receiver spot. Mark Sanchez is a solid back up QB and JJ Wilcox is a decent box safety with starting experience.
Release: Benson Mayowa, Kyle Wilber, Emmett Cleary, James Morris, Vince Mayle
Gotta churn the roster and these are all fringe NFL players. Time to find better & longer term fits.
Trade: Tony Romo Traded to Denver for 2017 3rd and 4th round pick
I see that many on here think we won't be able to trade Romo because of his contract and Broncos will just wait for a June 1st cut but if you look around the league, The Broncos are not the only team with a good overall roster that just a QB away from being on top. I see at least 4 teams. Broncos, Vikings, Jets, Bills. Few others are possibilities as well but unlikely to grab as much of Romos attention. Broncos decide to trade mid rounds picks to make sure they get him as they have many of their top players still under reasonable contracts for the next couple seasons. Leaving them their 1st and 2nd round picks and and 3rd round Comp pick to find O line help. Will have about 10 mil of cap space left over to fill out roster.
Main Free Agents:
DE Charles Johnson - Having a better year then last season but still not the same player he was a few years ago. I see the Panthers moving on and trying to rebuild while they retain the interior of their Defensive line. I saw many wanted him last year after his 1 sack season so why no go after him this year where he has gotten 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 18 QB hurries. We need a vet starter & a leader on our defensive line and Charles can be just that.
DT Domata Peko- Won't put up very much stats but he loves to do all the dirty work and free up other to make plays. A true team player. Has the size we want at 1tech as well at 6'3" 325lbs. Arguably the most athletic nose guard in the NFL so he should fit in with Marinellis scheme of quick explosive players at DT.
First i will say i can already see some hating my free agent picks but help yourself and look at the free agent class for 2017. Chandler Jones is the big prize but Arizona has already let it be know they are set on keep him long term. Even If it they need to franchise him for more time to work on a deal. Their are guys like Nick Perry or Jabaal Sheard but i see Perry staying in Green bay and Sheard getting a contact he doesn't deserve. Lastly their are old Stars who are on their last legs like Ware and Peppers but i put Ware in my last mock and everyone said no. And Peko would be an upgrade to what we currently have and would come at a fair price due to age. Both are stop gaps for the positions till we find and develop long term players.
1st.) DE/OLB Harold Landry, Boston College- Pass rush is our biggest need of the offseason. I found a starter for the time being in Johnson but Landry will be the future at RDE. Landry has been unblockable this year. Finishing with 15 Sacks, 20.5 TFL, and 7 forced fumbles. Sounds like the kind of stats a FCS player would put up but Landry played like this in the ACC. I just hope he doesn't move out of reach without a trade. My only hope is that this years deep edge rushers class lets him fall in our laps. Can play him at both defensive end as well as stand up to blitz on 3rd and long.
2nd.) DE Jordan Willis, Kansas State- Like i said pass rusher is our biggest need. And like Landry, Willis is a player you will start to hear more about soon. He is currently 6'4" 250 lbs but he has the frame to add on 10-15 pounds and not loose his speed or agility. Demarcus Lawrence has not turned out to be the DE we though he would be. Hes a nice starter but i don't think he will be worth keeping once his contract is up. Jordan Willis currently plays Strong side DE so thats where we should keep him. He has 10.5 sacks, 15 TFL, and 2 forced fumbles so far with 1 game left for the regular season.
DEN 3rd.) SS Xavier Woods, Louisiana Tech- Another player you should starter hear much more about soon. Like his former teammates Dixon and Vernon Butler who moved them selfs up the draft board last year, Woods has done the same this year. Hes a little undersized height wise at 5'11" but he is a very good all around athlete and a hard hitter at 220 lbs. His best attributes are his non stop motor, high football IQ, high character, and leadership. The RKG. Has 77 Tackles, 3 sacks, 6.5 TFL, 5 INTs, and 6 PBU. Good all around safety who would fit in great next to Byron Jones.
3rd.) CB Kevin King, Washington- Little bit of a project but one that will absolutely be worth it. Kevin King is a legit 6'3" 190 lbs corner with the frame to add on muscle. He has fluid hips and good change of direction. Doesn't have 4.4. speed but his long legs allows him to keep up stride for stride with wideouts and his long arms allows him to easily knock passes away. Not the hardest hitter but does a good job wrapping his long arms around ball carriers to bring them down. He is a very smart kid with 3.8 GPA, high football IQ, good character, and non stop motor.
DEN 4th.) WR Jehu Chesson, Michigan- A tall, lanky, athletic Wideout who has the speed to take it to the house after a catch. Decent route runner who does a good job of finding pockets in Zone coverage for an easy catch. Has nice reliable hands but will body catch from time to time as well. Already plays in a pro style offense at Michigan so should have an easier time adjusting to the pros then most others.
4th.) ILB Keith Kelsey, Louisville- A solid run stopping middle linebacker and one the leaders of the Louisvilles defense. He has great tackling skills with a coverage ability that is average at best. We still don't know if Jaylon Smith will play yet or how good he will be if he comes back. Having Kelsey as insurance and possible future starter at MIKE even if Jaylon Smith comes back great. Can always move smith to WILL if Lee is injured or retires.
6th.) OT Jon Heck, North Carolina- Heck has been North Carolina's starting Right Tackles since 2013. He is a great run blocker with ok at best pass blocking ability. He has the frame and length you want at RT at 6'7" 300 lbs. Our Right tackle situation is still a question mark at the moment. Doug Free is still playing well enough to warrant keeping his starting spot but with his older age and contact up after next season and Chaz Green still an unknown if he can be anything more then a Swing tackle with his durability, RT is very much a bigger need then some think. I would take a developmental player this year but i would seriously consider taking a OT in 2018s draft.
7th.) OLB Deon Hollins, UCLA- Really don't know who to take at these 7th round picks so i decided to continue working on the pass rush. Hollins will be this years Eric Striker. I would use a pick on him to make sure we get him and attempt to develop him as a pass rush specialist. He had 9 Sacks in 2015 but is not having the same type of season. The ability to rush the passer is their tho so lets see if we can pull it out of him.
7th.) DT B.J. Singleton, Houston- Gonna need some depth at defensive tackle developing behind Peko and Thornton. Like Peko, Singleton is a team first guy. Happy to do the dirty work and get very little to no credit. Won't have good stats but will be the bull rusher getting double teamed constantly. He eats up blocks and collapses the pocket from time to time. Is a big reason why Houston has the 2nd best run defense in the nation. Keeps blockers off his linebackers.
UDFA:
QB Sefo Loufau, Colorado- Has flashed good accuracy and good throws in traffic but continues to make mental errors. Practice squad QB who has the tools to possibly develop into a back up.
TE Wyatt Houston, Utah State- Good blocking Tight end with solid route running and good hands. Good size too at 6'4" 255 lbs.
RB Khalfani Muhammad, California- At 5'8" 180 lbs he is anundersized RB but can be replace dunbar and challenge Whitehead for return specialist role. Very tough and much stronger then he looks, Muhammad has legit 4.3 speed and he hits his top speed in an instant. Hes a shifty runner who is not afraid to lower his shoulder and fight for extra yards.
You can't fix all your needs every year but i was able to find solutions to our biggest ones and push needs that many would like to future proof like TE and RT to the front of next years draft along with WR, RB, and QB depth. 2018 draft may be an offense draft for us.
Some may not agree but i feel we keep our current starting cornerback duo of Mo and Carr for at least another year or 2.
