Keep: Morris Claiborne, JJ Wilcox, David irving, Kellen Moore.
Some want Mo gone but unless we plan on using a 1st on a CB (which is unpopular on this board) then we will be weakening our only strength on defense. Won't give him a long contract but a 2 year deal would be a good idea. As for Wilcox i would give him a 1 year prove deal and let him show that his solid play this year wasn't a fluke. If he proves his worth then extend him. David Irving is restricted so its a no brainer to keep him. Kellen Moore won with a worse team then we saw this year. Keep him around and start drafting a QB every other year. Brought back on a 2 year deal if he even wants to play anymore.
Release: Brandon Carr, Kyle Wilber, Lucky Whitehead
Nothing really surprising. Carrs contract is setup for him to be released next year or he may retire. Either way he most likely not on the team next year unless hes willing to come back for cheap. Wilber already lost his spot to Wilson. Whitehead flashed some ability to be a dangerous return man but he makes too many dumb decisions on kick returns.
Potential Comp picks:
OG Ronald Leary
WR Terrance Williams
DT Terrell McClain
SS Barry Church
Other offseason moves:
- Doug Free is cut to save cap. Brought back on a cheaper contract if he doesn't retire.
- Tony Romo traded to Denver for their 2017 3rd round pick and a conditional 2018 3rd round pick.
Free Agency:
-DE Jabaal Sheard- Had a very solid season in 2015 playing with his hand in the dirt as a 4-3 DE. Finishing with 37 tackles, 8 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles. Hes had an ok season this year with 5 sacks and no forced fumbles. maybe we can sign him for around the same contract he signed with the Pats. 2 years 11 million 4 mil signing bonus was his last contract.
- OG/C Jonathan Cooper- I take his very late signing with the team as his tryout. Bring him back and let him compete with Jumbo Joe for backup spot at training camp. I would give him a 2 year deal thats easy to get out of if needed.
1st.) WR John Ross, Washington- Their will potentially be a DE sitting their at our pick but a playmaker like Ross would be too hard to pass on. It does address a need and i also having a harder time trying to convince myself that we would pass on the 3rd ranked WR over potentially the 6th, 7th, or even 8th ranked DE in the 1st. He also gives us a option for KR/PR.
2nd.) DE Joe Mathis, Washington- I'm taking a shot in the dark here. Mathis grade is all over the place. But if you watch his tape from this year you will see the talent is their before he got injured. His explosion off the line, his bend, his speed, his very high motor. His lack of production is what has him such a hard player to grade. With only 4 sacks combined in the 2 season prior to this years. But in 6 games he had 5 sacks, 4 QB hits, and 31 pressures. He also has gone from 240 pounds to 260 and their is even video of him benching 225 40 times in a row. If he has added that kind of strength then he would be worth the gamble if he is still on the board.
DEN 3rd.) RB Alvin Kamara, Tennessee- I already know some are going disagree and say he won't make it to the 3rd but their is chance. especially if he is smaller then his listed size which he most likely is. They say hes 6'0" 215. Looks closer to 5'10" 200 lbs at the most. couple this with a very deep RB class. Hes not a 3 down back but as a change of pace back he can take our rush offense to another level paired with zeke. He is a very shifty runner with good vision, puts the effort in pass protection, is a great receiving option, and runs routes like a slot receiver. Would also give him Punt return duties over Beasley. His Pro Comp is Jamaal Charles and this is about where Charles was drafted.
3rd.) DT Montravius Adams, Auburn- Again someone will say he won't make it to this pick but they was saying the same thing about Carl Davis a couple years ago. Adams main cons are his questionable motor and his lack of strength. But his quick first step, speed, and size make it hard to pass on him if he makes it this far. Some may say no because of his motor but if anyone can get someones motor running hot its Hot Rod.
4th.) CB Corn Elder, Miami- Not the biggest corner but plays bigger then he is due to his long arms, deep speed, & athleticism. I think he would be a perfect slot corner for our defense. He is a very willing run defender and was used as a blitzer from time to time like how we use scandrick. Doubt he wins a staring role this year but he could make Scandrick expendable in 2018.
6th.) OLB Tyus Bowser, Houston- Bowser is a mid round talent who may go late due to an off field issue of him breaking his hand punching a teammate. Some may not want a guy who has physically attacked a teammate but if he checks out then he is hard to pass on. He has solid pass rushing ability. Also is solid in coverage covering slot corners at times at Houston. Hes too small to play DE at 6'2 240lbs but he can be a better Wilber at SLB. Would use him the same way too. LB on running downs. Can either use to blitz standing up or he can play with his hand in the dirt like he did at Houston. Would also be our main backup for MLB.
7th.) CB Jeremy Cutrer, Middle Tennessee- Small school corner with good size and good speed. We need depth at corner. Especially someone who can play on the outside if Mo goes down. Hoping he can be another late round gem and be a future starter at corner on the outside.
7th.) OT Storm Norton, Toledo- Big OT with great length. Was a big part of Toledos running success. He does have starting potential but he is more likely to become Chaz green replacement at Swing tackle. Could help band-aid RT for the season as well.
Priority UDFA:
WR Victor Bolden Jr, Oregon State- most explosive return specialist in college football
FB Freddie Stevenson, FSU- one of if not the best blocking FB in college. Also an underrated offensive weapon. has decent vision, speed, and hard to tackle. Also a legit receiving threat out the backfield.
QB Sefo, Liufau, Colorado- Practice squad QB. Flashed accuracy and ability to make completions in tight windows.
TE Wyatt Houston, Utah State- Blocking TE with solid hands and decent route running ability.
Top Needs 2018
OT- Finding a RT will be at the top of our list. Just looking ahead to next year OT can be pretty deep and much better then this years sad class. Would highly consider trading up in next years draft to make sure we get one in the 1st.
TE- This year is the 1st time Witten has ever talked about retirement. I think he stays another 2 years but his replacement will be needed soon. Not sure how next years class will be but if their is a solid 2nd round TE like another Hunter Henry then i would consider moving up again. Especially if we end up with a 2nd 3rd round pick from the Romo trade
QB- Need a back up for Dak. Kellen Moore is just a stop gap.
