Offseason project: Make T-Will confident with hand catches

At some point, Terrance Williams is going to have to make a difficult, leaping hands-only catch, perhaps with defenders in his face. Perhaps on a crucial 3rd-and-long against the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Perhaps on a desperate 4th down in a playoff game to keep the Cowboys' title hopes alive. It's bound to happen sooner or later.

He doesn't have to Dez it with spectacular beast-mode catches or go all Randy Moss with insane one-handed receptions. But this is the NFL. You can't count on the QB hitting you squarely in the jersey numbers each time. You need to be able to make leaping, extending hand catches. You need to be able to snag the ball with your fingertips if need be.

Williams already dropped a possible TD catch against Houston, didn't he?

Perhaps it's too late to fix this season - why change or mess with the familiar technique of one of your best WRs mid-season, while in the playoff hunt? - but it could be something to work on in the offseason.

That was a great catch. However, I think he still needs much more confidence.

I'm fine with Terrance catching the ball with his armpit as long as he keeps catching tds.

Yes he prefers to catch the ball against his body. Yes a hands catcher is preferable. But really this all started because of one game where he had some bad drops.

Maybe we should ease up on him?

Not really. People noticed it last year, but didn't say anything because he was a rookie and exceeded expectations.

For clarification, this isn't a "Bash T-Will" thread. It's just pointing out that he'd be a more complete WR if he could make difficult hands-only catches regularly. His skills would then be even more rounded.

Yep it's something they can definitely always be working on with him and getting him better. There is nothing wrong with that.

As long as he keeps catching the balls thrown his way and making big plays for us though I'm not going to worry about it.

Broaddus has mentioned before that Williams is constantly working the jugs machine after practice.

Yes, and think about how much better he could be with proper technique.

Maybe you should speak to Phillip Rivers about that awful throwing motion too, he's only the second-highest rated QB in the league. Disgusting and unacceptable. LOL.
