I think Jerry the GM is having a fantastic offseason. Here's a rundown of Cowboys' moves this offseason:

UFA:

QB Brooks Bollinger: Would rather have Stanback playing QB
LB Kevin Burnett: Would like to keep him for the right price
S Keith Davis: Would like to keep him too for special teams play and fire
DT Tank Johnson: Now free to go play with his assault rifles
LB Carlos Polk: Yawn
LB Zach Thomas: Solid but unspectacular; Brooking is more comfortable in Wade's system

RFA:

WR Miles Austin (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Hope we don't lose him
DE Stephen Bowen (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Ditto
WR Sam Hurd (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Decent player, but injury-plagued
OL Cory Procter (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): ***?

Players lost:

DE Chris Canty (Signed with New York Giants 3/1/09): Solid player, but not worth the exorbitant asking price
G Joe Berger (Signed with Miami Dolphins 2/27/09): Yawn
TE Tony Curtis (Did not receive restricted tender; now a free agent): Punishment for blocking no one on the punt in OT at 'Zone that led to the loss of McBriar for the season
QB Brad Johnson (Released 2/26/09): :bang2:
CB Adam Jones (Released 2/9/09): All you need to know is that he just got into a fight with a "Joe" on a reality TV
P Sam Paulescu (Did not receive exclusive rights tender; now a free agent): Watching him punt made me appreciate McBriar

Acquired:

LB Matt Stewart (FA signed 3/3/09): Hurt all last year; one of Wade's guys
LB Keith Brooking (UFA signed 2/28/09): He's Zach Thomas, only with a history of excelling in Wade's system
QB Jon Kitna (Aquired from the Detroit Lions for CB Anthony Henry 2/28/09): Huge upgrade at the backup position; stop-gap while we develop a young QB who we'll draft on Day 2
DE Igor Olshansky: Very comparable to Canty at half the price; on of Wade's guys

Traded:
CB Anthony Henry: While still serviceable, he is a declining player who the coaches apparently didn't think could make the transition to safety; replaceable due to the drafting of Jenkins and Scandrick

Cut:
S Roy Williams: Just not the player he used to be for whatever reason; more of a liability in coverage than an asset in getting people "blowed" up (Thanks, Emmitt)
WR Terrell Owens: The popcorn turned stale

Feel free to add anything I've missed. Overall, this offseason has been all about addition by subtraction.

I would give Jerry the GM an "A" so far this offseason.

Posters keep calling for him to step down and hire a real GM, but I really dont know what "a real GM" could have done differently than what Jerry already has done.

I think I let "Jerry the GM" keep his job a little bit longer, but maybe thats just me.

Offseason Recap

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think Jerry the GM is having a fantastic offseason. Here's a rundown of Cowboys' moves this offseason:

UFA:

QB Brooks Bollinger: Cowboys have Kitna now & will draft a young QB
LB Kevin Burnett: Would like to keep him for the right price
S Keith Davis: Would like to keep him too for special teams play and fire
DT Tank Johnson: Now free to go play with his assault rifles
LB Carlos Polk: He was very good on special teams to me
LB Zach Thomas: Solid but unspectacular; Brooking is more comfortable in Wade's system

RFA:

WR Miles Austin (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Hope we don't lose him; I think he is here to stay!
DE Stephen Bowen (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Ditto
WR Sam Hurd (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Decent player, but injury-plagued
OL Cory Procter (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): ***?To me you could lose him and not be hurt, I think thats why the cowboys looked at some centers in the combines and bowl games.

Players lost:

DE Chris Canty (Signed with New York Giants 3/1/09): Solid player, but not worth the exorbitant asking price I loved Chris Canty but we have Igor now
G Joe Berger (Signed with Miami Dolphins 2/27/09): Yawn
TE Tony Curtis (Did not receive restricted tender; now a free agent): Punishment for blocking no one on the punt in OT at 'Zone that led to the loss of McBriar for the season
QB Brad Johnson (Released 2/26/09):
CB Adam Jones (Released 2/9/09): All you need to know is that he just got into a fight with a "Joe" on a reality TV

QB Jon Kitna (Aquired from the Detroit Lions for CB Anthony Henry 2/28/09): Huge upgrade at the backup position; stop-gap while we develop a young QB who we'll draft on Day 2 totally agree

I added in what I thought, also I think we have a young developing TE in Rodney Hannah! Only thing we possibly need now in free agency like you said, resign keith davis and burnett for reasonable prices. Get the Ware contract out of the way. And sign a veteran CB or safety so we dont have to reach in the draft.

Agree with the post overall. Brooking is not Zach Thomas although he's better right now. I reserve the right to alter my opinion at any time.

I think Jerry the GM is having a fantastic offseason. Still early, but I agree. I knew he would come out alright.

UFA:

QB Brooks Bollinger: Would rather have Stanback playing QB I don't think so, but I know what you're saying and getting at, yes he needed to go.
LB Kevin Burnett: Would like to keep him for the right price What is the right price, again I understand, but it always gets me at this saying. If he can help, sign him. But he wants to be a starter, just couldn't do it here.
S Keith Davis: Would like to keep him too for special teams play and fire Yes
DT Tank Johnson: Now free to go play with his assault rifles JJ tried, give him credit, but we don't need himLB Carlos Polk: Yawn
LB Zach Thomas: Solid but unspectacular; Brooking is more comfortable in Wade's system Yes

RFA:

WR Miles Austin (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Hope we don't lose him Same here, I think he can push to become the #2 WR, the incentive is there.
DE Stephen Bowen (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Ditto Keep him for depth, knows the system
WR Sam Hurd (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): Decent player, but injury-plagued Would like to see him for another year, hope he sticks
OL Cory Procter (received second-round level tender; one year, $1.545 million): ***? Yes, why, other than they know what they have, unless someone better shows up.

Players lost:

DE Chris Canty (Signed with New York Giants 3/1/09): Solid player, but not worth the exorbitant asking price Yes, wish he could have stayed, but not for that kind of money. No, not a keep at right price statement :)
G Joe Berger (Signed with Miami Dolphins 2/27/09): Yawn Who? :)
TE Tony Curtis (Did not receive restricted tender; now a free agent): Punishment for blocking no one on the punt in OT at 'Zone that led to the loss of McBriar for the season Showed nice hands, but replaceable [Hannah]
QB Brad Johnson (Released 2/26/09): :bang2: Ditto
CB Adam Jones (Released 2/9/09): All you need to know is that he just got into a fight with a "Joe" on a reality TV Sounded good at the time, almost risk free, but back fired, good ridance.
P Sam Paulescu (Did not receive exclusive rights tender; now a free agent): Watching him punt made me appreciate McBriar Yes, but for being signed off the street, did an ok job, could have been worse.

Acquired:

LB Matt Stewart (FA signed 3/3/09): Hurt all last year; one of Wade's guys Not sure about this, only because I don't know too much about him. Hope he helps and just not a camp body.
LB Keith Brooking (UFA signed 2/28/09): He's Zach Thomas, only with a history of excelling in Wade's system Wouldn't say he's a Zach, and not sure about signing older players, but this one I'm on board with.
QB Jon Kitna (Aquired from the Detroit Lions for CB Anthony Henry 2/28/09): Huge upgrade at the backup position; stop-gap while we develop a young QB who we'll draft on Day 2 Yes, very good move here A+ if we draft a QB also.
DE Igor Olshansky: Very comparable to Canty at half the price; on of Wade's guys Yes, another great signing.

Traded:
CB Anthony Henry: While still serviceable, he is a declining player who the coaches apparently didn't think could make the transition to safety; replaceable due to the drafting of Jenkins and Scandrick Yes, this was a win win trade for us.
Cut:
S Roy Williams: Just not the player he used to be for whatever reason; more of a liability in coverage than an asset in getting people "blowed" up (Thanks, Emmitt) right, was tired of seeing blown coverages for big plays.
WR Terrell Owens: The popcorn turned stale Mixed on this one, but understand and ready to move on.
Feel free to add anything I've missed. Overall, this offseason has been all about addition by subtraction.

All the moves in the past 2 days, kind of making the nay sayers and negative fans take notice that JJ isn't as bad of a GM as they think. Patience is a virtue, it's a long off season, and things have a way to work out.

Jerry has done everything "we" felt he should do except get rid of Wade, which I'm not sure is the answer anyway. The way Wade turned around our defense in the second half of the season proves that he is a leader of men at least at the coordinator level. I so look forward to minicamps, the draft, training camp, preseason, the new stadium and the 2009 season. I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but it's exciting again for me. If there's one thing Jerry Jones does, it's peak the interest of Cowboys fans (and haters) everywhere.

You forgot the release of Stewart and Reid being replaced by a legitimate Special Teams coach. That alone deserves an A

Even the I am on board with the personnel decisions this off season I still have to give Jerry the GM a C+ for bringing Wade back.
