An explanation of sorts...I spent many years as a soldier or government worker. My habits are of a long time suffered by gained social practices of presentation.

Now, the Cliff Notes version:

At a similar point in age, Bill Parcells stated: Hey, if you wish to throw in the towel, no problem...we'll just ship you off.
So did I. All branches of the military encourage both clarity and brevity in written communications.

I stopped reading after the 5th misspelled word. Is there a smiley for SpellCheck?

Thank god for the google spell checker. It has done wonders for my posting ability. I need a google grammar checker. Hope they come out with one soon.

40 misspelled words in one post is a lot by any standard.

That is what is taught and supposedly wanted but in practice you will never see more long winded and overwritten paperwork anywhere else.

In all fairness, who'd really be in any position to say? Any post that extends beneath the fold, I just read responses to see if there's something in it I should go back and pay attention to.

I can help with that. For instance, you may want to write, "I hope they come out with one soon."

I'd be happy to help but first you need to explain what your incoherent sentence means.

I'm betting that you never had to give a briefback.

I am a retired Naval Officer with 26 years of service. I don't know what a "briefback" is (must be an Army or Air Force term), but I have had to do countless briefs in both verbal and written fashion. I have attended numerous joint service schools, and in every one of them, brevity and clarity was stressed in those schools (and I never once heard the term "briefback"). Say what you're going to say in the most concise, clear manner that you can!

The OP was seeming to say that his post was so long and detailed (? I didn't read the long post, so I don't know for sure how detailed it was) because of his military/government background. I'm saying the military doesn't teach one to endlessly ramble on in their written efforts.

I think he meant that all branches of the military teaches, and supposedly wants their people to communicate with both clarity and brevity, but that you will never see more long winded and overwritten paperwork than in the military.

More power to you, and props for caring enough to put it all down.

Mine was more a comment on my own laziness than a jab at long-posters, btw. I do scan threads with long OPs for the tasty-bits before working through the original content, though.

Nice of CC to put it all down. It's apparent that you put a lot of though into it. My only piece of advice? Brevity is the soul of wit. I think you could have said what you want in shorter form. I'm not knocking the effort, I'm just suggesting some judicious editing.

Well said, Phil. And you're right, we shouldn't knock somone for putting forth effort. I wasn't meaning to bash the OP for the length of the post, I was more thinking that a lot more people would read and comment on it if it was shorter. If the post is too long, none of us have to read it, myself included.

It's interesting that you say this because when I worked with the SEALs they understood the term "briefback" perfectly. Perhaps they stole it from us.;)

The concept of the briefback is used for briefing your higher regarding your assigned mission. It's not an OPORD because it's way more detailed than that due to assigned SMEs on a team briefing their portion.

The briefback consists of a simple formula: Two-Thirds (written) to One-Third (spoken) rule. The point being that brevity`is required to brief the Cdr using the one-third rule and hitting upon the important points. If he has questions about areas that require more specificity (that I won't discuss here in this forum), then he'll be referred to the Cdr's book that will address said questions.

There's also another application to the 2/3 to 1/3 rule involving the planning and training of the mission but there's no need to get into that at this juncture.
