OK, if no Free Agents, then who as UDFA would you after?

After reading how the Cowboys would not go into the FA market, only draft choices, then UDFA will be the Cowboys most productive source of talent. I hear that the draft is deep in DE and CB, so does the UDFA market look like the place for WR, TE, RT, DT?

I'll let you know when I see who goes undrafted...but most likely not. I get that we've had some good luck with UDFA's, but counting on it to get a useful player to contribute next year is pretty unrealistic

Only Dallas would look at their division and say "naaaaaah couple rooks can handle this on D, we dont have good qbs "

I hope im wrong and they dont have to attack FA but a signing or two would make sense.

We won't have to worry about a UDFA impact next year. Rico Gathers will fill that void quite nicely (in terms of fringe benefits).

UDFA won't be determinded until, well after the draft.

Wow. I've heard of "way too early" mock drafts... but now we're predicting UDFA!?!

Ever hear the term "putting the cart in front of the horse"?

I actually laughed at the thread title; it is getting to about that point unfortunately. I hope we're not that stubborn but likely will be, again. We can't draft D (well anyway), but won't sign FAs either?

I predict there will be at least one UDFA that the fans will go nuts over and think he is a HOF after a few plays in TC / first PS game.

The more burning question will be, what player will get voted the most hated, AKA The Nick Hayden Award. Who will fans harp on the most.

When is the last time the Dallas Cowboys didn't sign an outside free agent?

The team doesn't want to be overly reliant on free agency or invest in big money contracts on players they don't know, but they will sign some new players.

Dallas will look to keep some of its own free agents first before attempting to upgrade the roster in free agency and then focusing on the draft.

A sampling of outside free agents they’ve acquired in recent years:

Cedric Thornton – four years, $18 million
Terrell McClainthree years, $3 million
Alfred Morristwo years, $3.5 million
Darren McFaddentwo years, $3 million
Jeremy Mincey – two years, $4 million link

A lot of free agent nibbles that weren't cost prohibitive, even the Cedric Thornton signing wasn't viewed as a splash, even though that contract dwarfs the other three shown combined. Among 4-3 DTs, there are only 12 players with a higher average annual salary than Thornton ($4.25M).

Even if it isn't considered crazy money, the Cowboys will have to spend on the open market to sign any player of note.

I think DAL should target the guys that get cut from other teams like Chris Long or JLauranntis or trades like Mingo...guys that have been around and have low risk....gamble on them instead of 2nd round picks

Ok I'll play along how about this guy?

WR/TE Derrick Griffin - 6-7 235 - Texas Southern

This guy is intriguing because of his size advantage, athleticism (played basketball), but is probably considered a UDFA to most teams. He's kind of a WR/TE tweener with his long frame, but that seems to be more of the norm these days. I've seen him listed anywhere from 225 to 240. He played one full season of football in 2015, then was kicked off the team this past season for lateness. He was a top WR recruit and signed on with Miami, but his academics made him ineligible. He has the potential to be a mismatch terror against any DB, but those other facts along with limited playing time should keep him off most draft boards. At the very least, I think we should bring him in for the annual Dallas Day workout since he played at TSU.
