Most Raiders fans I interact with are disgusted by their team’s performance Monday night against San Diego. The Coliseum was sold out for the return of Art Shell as coach, and Randy Moss was ready to make a statement in prime time. But the Chargers pounded the ball with LaDainian Tomlinson on the ground, and quarterback Philip Rivers only needed to throw 11 passes (completing eight) in the 27-0 rout. The key to San Diego winning the game was the dominant performance from Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman. I was on the sideline to watch him play at “real speed,” and he is the best defensive player since Ray Lewis, and I would rate him ahead of Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears.

Merriman manhandled Robert Gallery and the rest of the Oakland offensive line and played with an intensity similar to Lawrence Taylor. He is an unstoppable force, and offensive coordinators will have to make sure he is accounted for on every play. Merriman will demand the respect of every quarterback, running back and tight end that he competes against for the next 10 years. Every player in the NFL should have to watch the video of Merriman against Oakland and commit to playing at his intensity on every play. San Diego is quietly building a Super Bowl defense.

Sack Leader...
The NFL tracks all stats for players. They didn't always do that. The internet gives access to this information. Shawn Merriman has been elected by the media as the most dominant player in the league. So what does the stats say.

Merriman in 2 games has 7 tackles 3 sacks and 1 interception. He is listed as a Linebacker.

Ryan Denney De Buffalo Bills 12 tackles 3sacks
Bart Scott Lb Baltimore Ravens 10 tackles 3 sacks
Justin Smith De Cincinnati Bengals 7 tackles 3 sacks

Keith Bulluck Lb Tennessee Titans 25 tackles
Chris Hope Db Tennessee Titans 25 tackles
London Fletcher-Baker Lb Buffalo Bills 20 tackles
Adam Archeleta S Washington Commanders 20 tackles
Demaco Ryans Lb Houston Texans 20 tackles
Eric Barton Lb New York Jets 19 tackles

So what is so great about 7 tackles and 3 sacks? People believe Shawn Merriman is so special then where is the proof.

Merriman compared himself to Junior Seau let's just see how they match-up.
Seau New England Patriots 17th season 13 tackles no sacks.
Merriman San Diego Chargers 7 tackles 3 sacks.
After 2 weeks Seau with a 3 tackle lead. remember a sack is a tackle for loss.

Lights Out for Indy's Quest for 19-0
Dec 20, 2005 | 12:00AM | report this

It might be a bit of exaggeration to call the San Diego Chargers' win over the Indianapolis Colts "fateful," but its impact on the league should not go overlooked. In sixty minutes of action, Shawne Merriman popped Peyton Manning and into the spotlight, and the Chargers popped the Colts' dreams of 19-0.

Merriman, the 6'4", 272-lb rookie linebacker from the University of Maryland, thrust himself into instant stardom and showcased his potential greatness with a dominant performance in the RCA Dome. His efforts -- statistically recorded as 4 tackles, including a fourth-down stop with the Colts inside their own 5, and two sacks -- were enough to earn him various accolades, including Defensive Player of the Week from SI's Peter King and multiple "booyahs!" and "hollas!" from Sportscenter anchors (note: not officially NFL-recognized accolade).

Even though Merriman still has major strides to make as an all-around defender (he is removed from the lineup in certain passing situations, as he has not completely grasped the Chargers' coverage schemes), he has shown the electrifying playmaking abilities that made him a top draft pick and which have many foreseeing him as one of the league's most dominant linebackers in the near future.

While Merriman's day gave opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators nightmares about the future, it also afforded a glimpse of hope for worry-wart defensive coordinators who will face the Colts this season. He provided the kind of ferocious pass rush that is perhaps the only weapon to slow down Peyton's potent passing attack. Few teams can release an athletic freak with the natural sack-artist abilties of "Lights Out," those that can put pressure on Manning will be able to challenge the Colts. Merriman stopped Indianapolis pursuit of history, but it remains to be seen if other teams have what it takes to stop them in their pursuit of a title.

4- CBS has him listed as a runner up for top player of the quarter..where is ware?

http://cc.msnscache.com/cache.aspx?q=4159536698038&lang=en-US&mkt=en-US&FORM=CVRE7

Defensive Player of the Quarter: It was a tough choice between Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers and Denver Broncos corner Champ Bailey. Since the Broncos have the better defense, I'll go with Bailey, the truest shutdown corner in the game.
Runners-up: Peppers; Ravens LB Bart Scott; Eagles DE Trent Cole; Broncos MLB Al Wilson; Chargers DT Jamal Williams; Chargers LB Shawne Merriman; Bears DT Tommie Harris.

Why the man love for Merriman, damn it is beyond pitiful. It isn't like we drafted Shante Carver instead of him. Ware is a very solid player.

These are the same mediots slavering over everything TO is saying. These are the same mediots that are wrong about 2/3 of the time. These are the same mediots that say merriman is the best player since LT. Now maybe you cannot add 2 and 2, but most of us here can.

I am sure if you posted that garbage on a Chargers message board, you would get more friendly replies.

My question to you is this:

Why don't you just support our players, and let this go?

So, we don't have Merriman.....Big, hairy deal....

We have a very good player in Ware, and Spears is playing a lot better. If we draft Merriman, we don't get Spears, IMO.

I will never understand why some people continue to look at players we COULD'VE had.

Just support those we DO have.

I don't understand the Ware vs. Merriman war on this board. We didn't draft Merriman just like we didn't draft 350+ other players. Lets just play with the hand we were dealt. Drafting ball players is not a exact science. Lets compare after 3 years.

Well consider the source. This is coming from the same idiot, who posted that he was concerned that Dallas first two picks this season were White Guys.
