OK, so how did the guys look at LG?

That was the main goal of tonight, to see if any of them would impress.
So did any?

I watched McQuistan like a hawk. The video feed wasn't great at times, but I thought he played well and helped himself tonight. He held up nicely in pass protection, and he looked smooth to me in this area. I saw him doing a good job one-on-on and sliding and helping while pass blocking. He looked good on double teams. Also, I saw one play where he picked up a stunt perfectly on a pass play. He did get beat to the inside on one run play. Plus, he had a real nice block down the field that enabled the running back to pick up a first down. Finally, he moved really well. The returns are early, but he passed his test tonight from what I could see. Now, that is just my eyeball test. I don't know all the assignments in the blocking schemes. However, I thought McQuistan played good, and it looked liked he knew what he was doing. He played left guard, and they took him out with about 5 minutes left in the game.

When you consider the fact that Free struggled some at times, and Proctor isn't a good center, I think you have to be happy with his play.

I predict he starts against Cleveland. I bet his play will get even better when he plays between two legit Pro Bowlers.

P.S.

McQuistan had a key block on Felix Jones' 12 yard run to the outside. He pulled to his right and looked good moving on the play. He tried to cut a linebacker on the run. The linebacker backed up a little to protect himself, and McQuistan got just enough of him and kept him from getting an angle on Felix as he turned the corner.

It does not have to be pretty as long as its effective. If you get the defender out of position to make a play, no matter how you do it, its a good block.

Well that is a good report. And frankly it sounds like you were watching closer then any columnist I have read so far. Or any of the blogs, etiher.

LG? Not sure. One play that does stand out though is that reverse. Proctor got planted firmly on his *** about 5 yards in the backfield. Jeez.

At least I think that was Proctor.

From all accounts Proctor ain't got enough lead in his pencil to ever be more then a temp fill in.

McQ obviously had some good moments and some bad ones, but I like the player.

A play that stood out was a screen to the left side.

Big Red pancaked his defender in space and then pushed another defender down right at the whistle as the play ended.

He hustles and he likes to hit people.

Yes. I'm surprised McQuistan isn't getting more play after last night. It looked like he played good and held his own. He appeared to know what he was doing.

Look what Vela said about these players at half-time:

Berger:

Missed on a twist and caused a third down pressure and incompletion
Pulled and made some blocks but missed people, too

Proctor:

"I keep seeing Proctor getting jacked".

Rafael Vela

Alexander

What's it going to be then, eh?

Good observations. McQuistan can really move for his size and get to the next level. He looks good pulling. He is bigger, stronger, and probably faster than Kosier. He is more athletic than Kozier. What he lacks in technique (Kosier's strength) , can be covered with athletic abiltiy while he gets more experience during every game.

McQuistan just needs the opportunity to prove his heart and mind on the field. Physically, he's got the tools to play inside for the Cowboys.

It is up to the coaches to give him the opportunity. Everyone has to start some where. Someone gave that guy from Denver an opportunity before he had all his starts.

Montrae Holland will be starting on opening day.

If not then by week two.

I would start Berger at Left Guard if Holland isn't ready yet.

That should say it all.

I thought they did fine. We were totally dominating Minny until later, when maybe the guys got tired. These backups aren't used to playing more than a quarter or two. I did see a couple of guys run around Berger as he wasn't quick enough to get to them, which might be a problem.

I do like McQ, as I guess most people know. One thing I love is that when the back gets past the line, he doesn't just stand there. He always runs down field looking for someone else to hit.

But really, they were all playing against scrubs. Shaun Rogers, Broderick Bunkley, and Mike Patterson are a whole 'nother thing.

I have to disagree with you on this one, DC Fanatic.

Berger has been starting at guard during all the preseason games. He played very poor against the Broncos. Kosier goes down, and Dallas plugs McQuistan in for him and not Berger for the last preseason game. If that isn't an indictment on Berger's poor play inside, I don't know what is.

I don't know what they will do, but McQuistan is 325 pounds, and he is a much better athlete than Berger. He has been up and down at RT this summer, and it may be due to the change in coaching. He played well last year at tackle, and he has the strength to anchor.

I think your selling McQuistan's performance last night way short. I can't believe you want him cut. He played good last night, especially, if you consider it was his first time playing at guard in the preseason and his most extensive playing time.

I think he can to do it, especially next to Adams and Gurode. He just needs a shot to prove his heart and mind, like Nate Newton stated.

From what I've read (and it certainly isn't the be all), I don't think the new guy will be able to pull, block a linebacker at the second level, and move in space like Kosier or McQuistan. McQuistan did that last night for Felix Jones on an outside run. The coaches have calls for Kozier, and McQuistan can run those plays. I'm not sure the new guy can.

Plus, Denver couldn't even get a 2009 pick for him.
