Ok, say your gm and head scout for a day for the Dallas Cowboys, what would you do for trades and draft picks>

As you all know we have
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. San Diego Pick for Crayton if catches 40 balls or more
6.
7. Supplemental Pick lost
7. Pick for McQuistan

Now, we might (have to wait and see what Adam our cap and compensation guru says, but we might get a 3rd to 4th for Flozell Adams and a 6th to 7th for Ken Hamlin in compensation picks.

Now, what trades would you make leading up to the draft, and during the draft. If say New England has a top 10 pick for Oakland pick this year, and Patriots are willing to trade their top 2 picks in first round, and possibly a 4th for say our first overall pick or 2nd overall pick in first round would you do it? Say for instance if Cowboys have a really bad year and have 1st or 2nd pick overall in first round.

Now, we know that we need a free safety, possibly a strong safety, an ROT, OG and possibly a center. I do think that our free safety is already on the team, in Ansah. But we will also need a CB, to replace either newman or scandrick. I still think that Teddy Williams who is from east texas area, from tyler texas, who runs the 40 in 4.26 and could be a lock down cb with that type of speed and talent.

So our obvious needs are OT, OG, C, CB, Safety and possibly DE if spears leaves, and QB if McGee doesnt work out later during the year at end of the season.

Hopefully someone like Hostile or another draft free agent guru puts up 2011 unrestricted free agents so we can see what is available for offensive line.

As I see it, we need some more impact players like Dez Bryant, and you get those generally at top of the draft, unless they fall like Dez did for whatever reason. So, I am all for getting quality players, not a bunch of draft picks but top picks in each round. What I would do is say use some of your 5th to 7th picks move up in top first 4 rounds or so, and get impact players.

Lol, I was just going to say that.

It would be nice to live in a world where you get compensated for players you outright release.

well i always hope u know that we can,

guess thats why it doesnt sink in

Compensatory picks
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").

Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

Joe, what are you failing to comprehend my friend. The passages you bolded clearly state players lost in FREE AGENCY.

Flozell was cut. It wasn't because he was an Free Agent that the Cowboys just decided not to sign or match offers from another team.

Flozell was cut...released.

No compensation for us.

thats where i was getting it mixed up buddy, i thought even if a player got cut, but was a free agent, and a team signed him, then you were awarded a compensation pick

i think deep down i knew that, but was hoping that in some way, we could get compensation picks, so then we could trade the picks in rounds we did have compensation picks to move up higher in the draft,

so i was overthinking

and dreaming, hoping, but i understand now, its what players you have on your team, that another team signs them as free agents, and you havent cut the players

i always drool draft time,

No biggie, I wish we were gettin an extra 3rd or 4th rounder too, lol.

Depending on where we pick, I would go with OT, CB, G in the first three rounds. Reports have indicated that this is a deep CB draft and weak OT draft. Get the best OT first (Sherod from Miss. St, maybe). Just my opinion.

IMO, I don't think that would be the best approach.

If a position of need is weak, you don't reach for a player to fill a need.

CB is a definite need and a position that is loaded with quality prospects this year.

Depending on where we end up I'd go CB first (if we are anywhere between 1-5). If we end up around 8-15, then I'd look at a OL.

Draft the best player at a weak position?

That's called reaching for need.

See Bobby, Al Johnson, Rogers, Marten, Brewster.

Peterson grades out like Woodson or Bailey.

Sherrod grades out as a decent tackle but nowhere near top OT's like Pace, Joe Thomas, Walter Jones, etc, etc.

That would be a huge mistake.

Last year's crop of OTs was infinitely better than what this year's is offering.

Lost to free agency, Joe, not released or cut.

UFAs/RFAs only.

Above - what happened to Kyle Kosier? Released? Retired?

Kyle Kosier is a Free Agent after this season. I don't see the point in resigning a 32-33 year old OG who seems to have caught the Injury Bug. Bringing in Gruden would help us get Davin Joseph who fits our OL scheme perfectly, as Gruden was the man to draft Joseph.
