Okay, here's how I see it...

After much waffling on the issue internally, I have decided that I'm okay if Garrett leaves. I have been as enamored with his potential and the possibility of him as our next head coach as anyone. But, while I still acknowledge that he may indeed "become" a great coach, my experience tells me he's not one now.

Why?

Well, this is only a microcosmic example of my overall experience last season, but, during the Ravens game at one point I looked over to my friend right before we snapped the ball... and I said (without looking at the screen)....

"Delayed inside draw, loss of one."

Looking back to the screen, we snap the ball, do a delayed inside draw, loss of one. And I'm thinking: "Ya know, if I know that's coming just from casually watching Cowboys game's each Sunday, then I'm guessing the defensive coordinators on these other teams who have intently studied film and Garret's tendencies... do, too. And frankly, that wasn't the first time I'd found Garrett's play-calling and gameplan to be predictable or even unintelligent.

Do you guys realize that, while he was in there, we didn't throw Felix even ONE pass? Not one screen. All year. Not from the slot. Not from the backfield. Not a single swing pass. We have a guy who could potentially take it the distance every time he touches the ball, and our "genius" OC doesn't draw up even a single play that gets the ball in his hands in space? All. Year.

Then there was the first Commanders game, where Garrett handed the ball off (in a close game with a fierce pass-rush) only 8 times throughout the entire contest. Of course, we lose. But that's not nearly the only time Garrett refused to hand the ball off, even if it's EXACTLY what was needed -- like against the Ravens and/or Steelers, who I think we clearly showed we could run against. Tashard Choice was tearing them up! Yet time & time again, Garrett called plays that had Romo taking 5 and/or 7 step drops... right into the teeth of the pass-rush.

And I understand growing pains. And I understand potential. But if Garrett really is that smart and really does have that much potential, I don't know why we didn't see it on the field. I don't know why we didn't see his genius adjust when our offense was exposed. Because it really didn't take a brain surgeon to see what was going on, or often, what the next play Garrett called was gonna be.

And I'm not laying this season's mess entirely at Garrett's feet, by any means. But I am holding him responsible for his contributions, or lack thereof. The regression of Tony Romo. The poor play of the receivers. The smack-your-forehead play-calling. The unimaginative schemes, and predictable plays. I won't mind if Jason Garrett becomes the coach of... anyone else.

Perhaps I'm being a fool?

It's possible. Maybe Jason Garrett will go elsewhere and flourish as a great head-coach. I'm certainly not betting against him. And I'm not even saying he couldn't possibly make it work here. But I don't think the quarterback respects him. I don't think the receivers respect him. Jason Witten might. But our offense had bigger problems than injuries this year, and I'm of the opinion it was the man coaching that side of the ball.

If he's back, I will support him and his maturation at the position with all my might. But, for all the reasons I mention above, I'll be okay if Garrett leaves. I've been on the fence. Guess I am still, a little. But if Garrett walks, Shannahan might be in. And since Eric Mangini has already said that he's trying to convince Romeo Crennel to stay on as the defensive coordinator in Cleveland, if such a move were to happen it would set precedence for Wade making a similar move here.

I'm sorry, what were we talking about again??

IMO overrated way of judging a coordinator. You can do that to almost any team including teams you seldom get to watch.

I hardly ever watch a game and say wow did not see that coming. Maybe the wildcat formation Miami pulled on New England would qualify, but that is about it.

How complex is Philly? They sucked a plenty. Now they are on a tremendous roll. Did the O coordinator get more creative or did the players start executing better?

I bet you dollars to donuts if we have a new O coordinator next year and Romo, Kosier, Felix, and Barber all miss considerable time our O will struggle and probably be a lot worse than 7th in the NFL in yardage.

When the OL and Romo were playing well our offense was near unstoppable. Not saying that Garrett should not have done better I am sure he should have. I also know that every fan of every team not playing tomorrow is probably upset with some of the schemes or offensive play calling.
