OL Review

I am weary of taking an undersized/lack of length interior player too. Our two biggest issues is the lack of a push in the run game and their inability to anchor against stronger players. However, the more I watch Linderbaum, the more I think he is similar to Osa, Both are former wrestlers, who know how to use leverage effectively, same could be said about Aaron Donald who also was undersized for his position. Think these players can overcome their physical shortcomings.

DallasCowboys.com rn an article about 12 mock drafts and one that had Dallas taking Linderbaum claimed Cowboys insiders say they see him as a Center only and that he cannot move out to OG. Stepnoski was an undersized Center who was very successful because he knew how to use leverage. But the Cowboys will be facing some of the best DT in the league and they cannot afford to make a mistake on an undersized Center. I also don't think C is as big of a problem as LG.

  • Kenyon Green: Surprised to see only 20 on the bench.
  • Trevor Penning: I'm skeptical that Green goes before Penning.
  • Bernhard Raimann: I don't see him as worth a 1st.
  • Zion Johnson: If he can play OC, then that moves him up a notch for me.
  • Tyler Smith: Physically better than most or all other OL available at #24 or later. No technique. Just lines up and plays.
  • Darian Kinnard: College RT. Should be a solid OG.
  • Nicholas Petit-Frere: Looks really good in game footage. Maybe a bit underrated.
  • Sean Rhyan: Solid player. Likely an OG or RT in the NFL. More 'ready now' than some higher rated players.
  • Zach Tom: Natural OC forced to moved to LT his final 2 college seasons. A very good mid/late prospect at OC.

I don't get Green's overall rating. His combine numbers are not that good compared to others rated below him. If I am looking for a OG I am praying Zion Johnson falls to me or Penning. But I see Johnson as an immediate plug in player. I worry about Green. When I watched him at the combine I was not impressed. I worry he will need a year or two to get stronger, like Connor Williams and the problem is, he may not ever get strong enough. Johnson has a thicker lower body and that should help him standup to some of the bigger stronger DTs in the league.

Disclaimer: I don't know what kind of work ethic Green has so I am basing my assessment only on his physical traits. If he has a great work ethic then I am okay with upping my assessment of him.

Yes, bigger hole at Guard right now

Wouldn’t be worried with Linderbaum at all in the run game - he was dominate in college. The problem would be in pass protection, the combination of his short arm length against length could cause issues.
Lack of anchor has really hurt this team when the picket quickly collapses

I believe Linderbaum will be long gone. Outstanding tape.

I think we have a good shot at him based on mock positions and where the obvious center picks like him in previous years have drafted. I’ll be happy with that pick.

Being a North Carolina fan, please stay away from the two that they have on this list. They are absolutely atrocious. They look the part, but are so bad.

L is about average in the NFL for size as regards center. This obsession over a few lbs is truly stupid.
You clearly never watched him play.
Those who have laugh at you.

Why hasn't Kinnard gotten more hype? He is expected to kick inside and is a dominate run blocker. I know he needs work in pass protection, but so do several others.
I've found some tendencies of the draft media over the years where they're off-base on certain categories of players.
  • Kinnard is in the top 3 of those categories.
    • 1: Seniors. The draft media evaluates players in the Junior year and then they don't always spend much time updating those evaluations unless the player is 1st round type prospect.
    • 2: Players that project to another position or scheme in the NFL.
    • 3: Interior OL with sub-par combine/pro-day performances. Size/length correlate much more than athletic measurables for interior OLinemen (Frederick).

I think he could be just as good as both Green/Zion as a Guard.

You clearly never read my full comments.

Broadus in a tweet couple days ago stated he don't see them taking the center. I'm thinking its Green or Zion

List of measurables sorted by NFL.com player ranking.

Height, Weight and Arm Length are the primary measurables for OLinemen.

Athletic measurables are interesting if they've way off from similar players, but generally don't correlate to success as much as skill position speed/agility measurables.

Hopefully their are enough quality Olineman deserving of our early draft selections.
We have kind of pained ourselves into a corner not signing any in free agency.

Yeah, I was not impressed by his Combine performance either. He looked clunky in the position drills and his athletic testing was poor. That said, he does have good film. That said, like you I do prefer Zion as a prospect over him in terms of being a step-in starter as a rookie.
