OL Scenario's

Jerry said the next order of business is Free's contract. Here are the two scenario's I think will play out.

1) If Free takes a pay cut then he stays. We sign Brandon Moore to play RG and cut Livings whose contract was not re-structured.

starting OL: Smith/Fred/Costa/Moore/Parnell

2) If Free doesn't take a pay cut. He is cut and we sign Clabo to play RT.

starting OL: Smith/Livings/Costa/Fred/Clabo

I think Fred starts his first year at one of the guard spots if Costa is healthy. The staff really likes Costa and would probably feel more comfortable with a vet at center vs. a rookie.

I'm hoping for scenario #2, as I think if we can upgrade the middle of the line, then that really helps Romo and the running game. I think Parnell with a vet guard beside him, will do just fine playing RT.

i don't see us adding a guard at all. i think it's all about what they see in parnell. if they think parnell can play then cutting free salary to about 2 mil should be something good for both sides.
if they don't think parnell is ready or ever gonna be ready then sign clabo , cut free on june 1 and move on

Might be the coffee this morning but I think i'd go with option 1.

Parnell just has so much ability and Clabo just can't move around like Parnell or Winston. I don't trust Clabo's pass protection at this stage in his career. I don't trust Parnells either but I like the upside.

We truly need to sign a RT and a guard.

I just don't know what to think about our situation anymore other than I don't think Bernadeau can play well @ guard. Center maybe.

always depresses me when I hear how comfortable, etc the boys are with Costa. This same bunch thought he was ready to start in 2011 and they were certainly WRONG then.

At this point, I am beginning to think Dallas is not signing a free agent OL.

I thought we restructured livings too ? Besides the point...I don't see us signing a free agent either honestly. Think our oline is pretty much on the roster already

Costa did alright in his short time last year. I think he deserves another chance.

I also think Kowalski is a sleeper in there somewhere. He looked like a nice player as a rookie.

If Frederick starts at center it may keep Costa or Kowalski off the field and im worried that one of them is one of our 3 best interior guys.

We got the guys in house to potentially get very lucky but we could just as easily whiff.

A line that looks something like this could turn out decent and has upside.

LT-Smith LG-Kowalski C-Frederick RG-Leary RT Parnell

Don't see us signing Winston or Clabo. Either Free takes a cut and stays or he doesn't and is released. I have a feeling we will bring in someone no one has ever heard of as swing OT as a F/A if that's the case over Winston/Clabo ( Jerry being cheap with the O-line once again ). Then we will have to hope Parnell continues to improve and that neither he nor Smith get injured or we will have another cheap turnstile OT once again messing up our offense.

I believe Frederick will be our center, we need a person who is capable of handling a big nose tackle and person who is smart to make the calls at the line. I believe Frederick will bring both of those traits to our team.

Costa is going to have to find another way to get on the field IMO, he will have to beat out a guard or else be a backup. He did ok in his short time last year, but ok he wasn't spectacular by no means. He was just better then what we had, and Frederick is far better then Costa.

I am rooting for Leary, he is the dark horse that could actually turn into a nice pro, Cowboys have a feel for him now after a year. I think last year for Leary it was to see if he could handle practice and see if his injury would come back. They will have more confidence this year in his ability to stay on the field. (fingers crossed)

I am not as high on Parnell as the rest of you guys, this is his 4th year in the league. He should have already developed into the stud that many have projected. I do feel he is better then Free, but what is that really saying? Free has been awful for 2 years, false starts, holding, getting overpowered, and just missing blocks. If we go this route then I am on the Parnell bandwagon, but that is not my first choice. I honestly would take Winston, Clabo, Mckinnine, or Winston Justice over both of those guys.

To me RT is the issue.

My line would look like this if I had my choice.

Smith, Leary, Frederick, (Costa, Bernie,Livings battle), Clabo or Winston

Competition rhetoric aside, I think we drafted Fred to be our center.

My favorite scenario would be Smith-Moore-Fred-Livings-Parnell.

However, there is something intriguing about Smith-Leary/Costa-Fred-Livings-Parnell. If this lineup works, then we can replace Livings with a draft pick next year and our line is set for the foreseeable future.

Comfortable enough to to use their 1st round pick on a center?

We saw a lot of Tackles drafted last weekend. There has to be more cuts on the way.

It's so hard to gauge what they are going to do with this o-line or how good our guys really are because of the plague of injuries we had, even our back up guards got injured...

Such a fluke scenario this past season. My guess is that with some of them having off season surgery and time to heal, Livings and Bernadeau will get one more shot to prove their worth. If they look like they are still recovering we might see guys like Costa, Kowalski, or Leary getting a shot. Funny thing is most of them if not all of them were injured last year as well..

We are due for some health...

If he is what I think and hope he can be, I would love to see Leary start. I think this is the best-case possible line-up given what we already have on roster: LT-Smith LG-Livings C-Frederick RG-Leary RT-Parnell.

Not true. He was exceptional in the Baltimore game and that was with him being matched up alot against Ngata I believe. With that being said, we need to find out if that is the "new and improved" Costa, providing he stays healthy.
I think we see Costa staying at Center with Frederick at Guard. Then should Costa get injured, we have Frederick able to come in.

Smith/Frederick/Costa/Bern/Parnell

I am still not sure about Parnell however, so I could stills see us with someone else still not on the roster taking over RG.

I would rather have $7 mil and Rob Pettiti playing RT than Doug Free.

You say that, and then people mention that he represented an upgrade at OC, even in 2011 and that his play that year actually improved with the starting reps he got, and then it improved again in 2012. And then we go around and around again.

They like him. They liked him a lot to roll the dice on him when they cut Gurode. They like him in the running game. He worked hard to improve his pass set once he got into the starting lineup, and they extended him.

It's a good thing when a player develops out of nowhere. Not something to be depressed about. And if Frederick comes in and takes his starting job, that's a good thing, too.

I think Free agrees to a cut. We'll move on from RT to OG and bring in Moore. And then we'll go into camp with competition at both G spots, C and RT.

There's a good chance we keep Livings and Moore and bookend Frederick with them. Costa becomes the game day interior line backup, and the loser of the RT competition (likely Doug Free) the swing OT. Leary or Mack are the wildcards to bump Livings off the roster if either plays well enough to earn a starting job, but that cut doesn't happen until the final roster cut down.

I think Phil Costa could win the C job outright, if he plays really well and they decide to use Frederick to fill an OG spot, but I like the idea of more beef right in the center of the line, and adding Frederick at C kind of minimizes the upheaval since C was a position in flux last season and Moore has more experience than the other OLs in Callahan's scheme to begin with. We'd have a decent shot of going into the season with a fairly consistent lineup and no obvious injury concerns. Bumping Livings throws another new starter into the mix. Playing Frederick at RG means starting a rookie next to another raw player at RT, assuming that RT is Parnell.

So we have 15 OL. Who are locks to make the team? Who are locks to start (that should deflate you)?

I have Frederick, Costa, Smith and Parnell as locks and Frederick and Smith as locks as starters.

I think Costa will compete with Frederick at C then G. The best combo of those two will likely play C and RG.

I think Parnell and Free will compete at RT and right now I think Parnell will beat him out. I don't know about the financial aspect concerning Free so I'll leave it out. I don't know enough about Simmons and Weems to have an opinion. I would like someone who knows these players to comment.

I think you can throw the rest of the guys into the interior mix and one will push for a starting G position. I'm interested in seeing how Ski does and I'm hoping Arkin has gotten strong enough to compete. Leary may compete as well if his health has improved. I have no idea about Livings and Bernie. There has been some concern about their health last year so I don't know how to evaluate their play assuming that is even based in reality. What's important is we have competition.
