Why any city would want to host the Olympics is beyond me. A 25 year nightmare in exchange for 2 weeks of glory.

Revenue, increase in job opportunities? A city's economy can be set for awhile after an Olympics. I am all for it as long as it is not in the city that I reside in :D

Atlanta and LA seemed to do well; SLC did OK (big problem there was too many out of state companies got the contracts)

But a lot of cities are very wary and rightfully so

That never ever happens. Same as the World Cup. Cities are just going to stop bidding.

In the US, however, it would be easier than other places because a lot of the infrastructure is already in place. We could probably host the Olympics tomorrow if we wanted to.

Those are the promises the IOC makes which most recent cities hosting the Olympics comes unfulfilled.

Curious. How can it be set for a while?

Don't really mean the city as a whole, but some businesses. Hotels can rake in a lot of revenue that will pad their books for awhile, Rental cars, some restaurants and other various industries.

I know that some hosts have been hosed, but there are other problems that contributed. I think America can handle it, in most major cities anyways.

Detroit could really use it, it might help turn-around that place. Nah, never mind, they are in too big of a mess.
