This is for you guys that really follow college football. So, I have to assume Jeanty goes to Raiders or Bears.

Is the 12th pick too early to take the NC RB Hampton? And secondly, he will definitely be gone before round 2, right?

oops i put this in wrong spot.

I'm leaning toward trading down a little and taking him. I badly want a first-round DT, but if we're going to be a running team, we need a hoss and Hampton may be the surest bet outside of Jeanty (and even considered better by some).

If we could trade down somewhere around 20, I think he'd be a good value. If we do that and lose out on him, then I'm OK with my backup plan to take one of the DTs or WRs.

Your first mistake is that you think you'll be doing the drafting.

Hampton is probably an early 2nd...don't read too much into the mocks. The Browns , Giants, Raiders, Bears are teams that could very well draft him in the 2nd...those teams that pass or missed out on Jeanty. Teams who have an abysmal running game....that includes that Cowboys, but I think Hampton will go before we pick in the 2nd.
The RB class is so deep that a team like Denver will more likely take a WR or DT in the 1st and come back in the 2nd to get a Judkins or Henderson. Taking an RB in the first for most teams is not good value, unless you're in position to draft Jeanty.

great thoughts. thank you.

There's other guys I would rather have at 12, but Hampton is damn good.

He's a DeMarco Murray clone. There's nothing about his game that's at a "superpower" level, like Jeanty's tackle breaking, but he's very good at everything. He can run inside, run outside, block, catch, handle 30 carries, push the pile on 3rd and 2, and break a 40 yard run. Hampton's a feature back from Day 1.

The problem as always with RBs, though, is that you can get a guy with like 80% of Hampton's game in the 3rd round (say Kaleb Johnson). Compare that to say DEs... you aren't getting 80% of James Pearce's production in the 3rd. You'd be happy to get a Chauncey Golston type. Those 1-on-1 matchup type positions are the ones where you need to take elite athletes early.

I think Hampton's a first round pick though. If you want to compare him to a couple other skill players in this class, I think he'll have a more productive rookie contract than Luther Burden, Colston Loveland, or Isiah Bond. Those guys all have kind of niche skill sets, where they'll need to go to the right situation to be successful. On the other hand, Hampton is dummy proof. You can't screw up with him because he's good at everything. Jason Garrett could get Hampton to 1200 yards.

what a great write up!!!! thanks.
and thats what this organization needs...a first rounder thats dummy proof.

the best option imo, taking a DE like Mykel Williams become much more palatable in a trade down situation.i hope one of those top Olinemen are still available at 12 because i dont see anybody willing to trade up for other positions in this draft at 12.

Best to trade down into the early 20s and get an extra 2nd or 3rd & 4th round picks.

Use that traded down early 20s pick on DT Derrick Harmon. Take RB Bhayshul Tuten in the 3rd.

The Cowboys have a good assortment of pass rushers, but creating pressure hasn’t been the issue for this defense. Of course, it helps when you have one of the best defensive players in the league in Micah Parsons on the roster. The Cowboys have finished in the top three in sacks in two of the last three years. What’s impressive about that stat is that one of those years was last year, where they had to reach deep down the depth chart to get help.

While the pass rush was still there, the Cowboys have seen a drop off in creating turnovers over the last two years. In 2021 and 2022, the Cowboys defense led the league in takeaways, but in each of the past two seasons, they have finished outside the top 10. That is something the defense would love to get back. Eberflus was asked what concept or philosophy is the hallmark of his defense and he was quick to respond.

“It’s pretty simple. We take the ball away. That’s what we do.”
And when you look at the pieces they have combined with the pieces they’ve added, that’s not just lip service. It appears they are making a concerted effort to have players who not only can get to the quarterback, but have the ability to attack the ball and jostle it loose.

One thing about the Cowboys' revamped pass rush that will make it fun to watch is that these guys are splash makers.Micah Parsons, Osa Odighizuwa, Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, and Payton Turner...they don't just sack you, they take the ball away.

I like Hampton, but only in a trade down scenario.

Look at the cost to aquire a above average player at RB vs DT/DE/OT/WR in Free Agency.

When you can sign a top 15 RB for pennies on the dollar, the value at 12 just isn't there. Especially when you have an owner who doesn't want to pay top FAs.

If this team was stacked at those other positions and you were a good RB away from a chance at a title...OK, I can see it - but Dallas isn't close.

Use your premium picks on a premium cost positions.

Of course, you throw this all out for a generation type back, but I don't see that this year. It's a very deep class...some talented backs will be there in 3rd-5th rounds

as deep as this RB class is, unless Jeanty falls to us we need to wait on that.
The critical need is DT. We need to have like three targets that we are determined to get to clog the massive hole in the middle of our D.
Honestly if we took two DTs in the first three rounds I would be very happy.

IF you want to win a championship, you have to have the D. The Birds proved that in the last SB. The absolute Best QB in the game was contained by a pass rush and also no running game.

We have enough guys that can rush the passer. But we need to stop the run or we will lose the big games again and again.
