We're 4-2 after 6 weeks.
Last season, after 12 weeks, the Giants were 7-4, and they had just come off a week 11 win over the lowly Lions 16-10, along with a week 12 beatdown at the hands of the lowly Vikings at the Meadowlands 41-17.
12 weeks of inconsistancy, mixed with futility, along with two losses to the Cowboys...Eli was considered a joke and choke artist, along with a Giants team that was barely in the playoff hunt and struggling.
Yet somehow they managed to pull it together despite losing their starting TE, still only finished 10-6, which included another home loss to the Skins 22-10 in week 15.
They never got on a roll until the playoff victory over the Cowboys, but they did.
We have a talented team that has better talent and depth than last season's 13-3 team. Right now, we struggle in one or more phases of the game every week, and some of our stars are in a current rut. Losing our punter for the season today is a huge and inexcusable loss, but our players still seem to play like they think their talent and preseason press clippings will get them to the promised land. WE still depend on big plays and seem to have no stomach or discipline necessary to grind out sustained drives.
Yep, we're struggling mightily, but I think those who claim Romo suddenly stinks or TO is suddenly over-the-hill or our high powered, high scoring offense suddenly can't operate because we don't have a top #2 receiver, and worst, that our coaches stink and should all be fired....well, I think those fans are a little too simplistic...the players block, catch, run routes, pass, tackle, and make decisions during the game...lately, they haven't been doing a very good job of that. Everyone needs to step up, set their jaws, and prepare to grind their way to a winning streak that helps them find their rhythm, and it's not likely to happen over night.
Still, we have fairly good talent, and today I finally saw the defense get after someone and play with agressiveness and spirit. Sadly, the offense and special teams left their games at home.
It's a long season, and our team won't make the playoffs or win any playoff games just because the preseason pundits said we're the best team on paper. Our players have to find a way to win their individual battles and avoid being the guy that kills a play on either side of the ball.
It's frustrating as hell, guys, but we're not in our third consecutive 5-11 season, and we DO have the hope of putting it together before the playoffs, which is better than going week to week just hoping we can win another game and maybe get to .500 for the season.
No one will ever accuse me of wearing rose-colored glasses. I usually get called a fair-weather negative fan because I recognize that we're not as good as our reputation and we're over-rated right now, but even I can see that we have the talent and the coaches to win against anyone in the NFL when we put it all together on a good day.
It's way too early to throw in the towel, no matter how frustrated we are. Remember how the Giants fans must have felt when they squeaked into the playoffs and were rewarded with a trip to TExas stadium to face a team that dominated them in the regular season. We have time...the players and coaches have to find their way to a streak.
