I'm certain if he continued to play at the level he played at this year that Tyron Smith could have been a top 3 pick in the draft next year. This guy is a prized prospect athletic, long arms, decent strength(29 reps of 225), and has agility. Lineman are not the sexy pick but I think we got ourselves a steal. I forgot to mention he's 20 years old. Solid pick.

At only 20 years old I'm excited about his growth potential...

And the Eagles took a player six years older at #23. :lmao2:

Our guy will be in his second contract, with a Pro Bowl or two under his belt by the time he reaches that age.

Any you know Tyron will keep his nose clean for at least awhile, the cat ain't old enough to get into a bar!

Him coming out a year early really benefits us, just as Dez's issues really benefited us.

The Dez pick at #24 was a grand slam, ninth inning, two outs, 3-2 count, down by three runs.

This one is a solid home run in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie.

Win, and a win.

Nice post. That's how I'm seeing it. When a team suffers through a season like ours did it's critical to get a great draft choice. We had a huge hole at OT. We got the best in the draft who, in all likelihood, would have been a top 5 pick next year. The only real negative on him is his experience - which he will gain. Everything else is off the charts. He was our 5th-rated player in the draft and we got him at 9. It was a rare moment where need was met by getting the best player in the draft at that position. That doesn't always happen at 9. I remember in '98 getting like the 3rd or 4th rated DE (Ellis) with a top 10 (#8?) pick. I was excited about the possibilty of trading down but I'm glad we got our guy. Smith and Free could be a great tandem for years. Interior OL are easier to find (theoretically) than tackles and we just shored up a critical position. Let's keep it up for at least the next 2 rounds (and hopefully the rest of the draft).

Smith was the right pick and an excellent selection. A big cherry on top would be somehow getting lucky and finding a starter at OG in either the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

thats the good thing quality guards can be found in the 2nd and 3rd...if your lucky even later:D

Having missed Peterson, is like saying darn for not having a 'Frisco Bay shot, when the second deck was hit in left.

This officially kills the "Jerry won't draft a OL in the first round" theory and more importantly, kills the "We don't draft good OL" theory that has been haunting us.

Agreed on the first part, and crossing my fingers on the second.

I wasn't happy with the pick at 9 because we didn't trade back but now there rumors saying minny and jags tried trading up and we wanted minny second round pick and more from the jags. So it makes me feel good that we had something in mind but we stuck to our guns and took am ol. I thin Jason definitely had alot of input in this !

The thing about him being only 20 years old is even better than some think. He only turned 20 in December. That means he played last year as a 19 year old. He's still got lots of growing and getting stronger ahead of him. I really like the pick.

I like the pick I will say I hope they add some weight to. I did notice they had him listed at 305 would like to see another 10 pounds added to his frame

But with Mr. Wojcik now in the house I won't lose any sleep over it. He'll be a solid 315 when the season begins. This kids looks like D.Ferguson of the Jets....hoping he's as good too.

That is a good point. I listed to an interview on Cowboys radio with him right after the selection and I did not come away with a guy who was overly cocky, he was well spoken and was ready to get to work also willing to play where ever the coaches want him

I couldn't agree more. steelers picked pouncy last year. GB picked Bulaga last year and picked Sherrod this year.

truth is OL men last 10-15 years in the league and look at what happened to us after Adams left. with him there, we were solid at LT spot for 10 years.

then it all fell apart.

solid. solid solid pick.

You are aware the Cowboys wanted Watkins at 40, right?

The only reason Smith wasnt starting LT at USC is Matt Kalil who will be a high first rounder this year was already starting there.

I wouldn't make too much fun of this...we drafted Newman at 26 years old. Besides, Watkins will start immediately at OG...he's a great player, and of all the positions in football, being a 26 year old OG is probably meaningless. In ten years, he'll just be starting to slow down a little.

We drafted Newman when he was 24 IIRC.
