I think it is of the upmost importance to next year, and the future of our team that we change the drafting direction from defense to offense.

We've stocked defense for the last two years in a row. And haven't drafted a single offensive player in the first round in god knows how long.

I'm surprised at that lack of ingroomed talent on the offensive line. That is probably the biggest thing we should be ashamed about. The people in charge of the offensive line should have been fired.

I agree too unless there is a stud NT where are slotted. If BP is still here I wouldn't expect us to draft a Wr in the first unless we are drafting 31 or 32. If we are in the 20s, I see drafting a QB or OL unless what I mentioned first happens. Never forget FA helping in needed areas too with the cap going up.

whos that?

University of South Carolina WR, he exploded on the SEC scene last year as a freshman with over a thousand yards and 13 receiving TDs, he would be out of high school for 3 years after this NCAA season, and would be eligible for the draft, and we should take him in the 1st round ;)

if he was a freshman and 3 years out, if i were him i would stay in the SC program for another year, with spurriur at the helm and their run and gun offense it could only add to his already impressive stats

true, but I want him to enter when the WR class is deep, so we can have a chance to snag him late in the 1st

I know, I'm selfish :)

To answer your "not really" question, the last offensive player the Cowboys drafted in the 1st round was David LaFleur in '97.

And yes, I have his jersey.

Sidney Rice should be our 1st round pick next year

God I hope not. Recievers who played thier college ball under Steve Spurries dont exactly have the best NFL track record.

Jaques Green
Reidel Anthony....something like that
Taylor Jacobs

there are several more but for some odd reason I cant seem to think of thier names...oh yeah its cause they were never any good

a valid concern, but the knock on SPurrier WRs is that he doesn't put the best athletes on the field there, Sidney was one of the best high school players in South Carolina, so I don't see Sidney as having that problem

That's the name that came to my mind based on our needs and who would likely be available in the neighborhood of where we end up picking.
I also would have to mention Brohm and Stanton at the QB position but both will probably go higher than where we pick.
I'm thinking we will trade up next year. If JJ gets injured again this year and A Peterson comes out early....look out. I'm also a huge Brady Quinn fan and think he'd be worth about whatever we'd have to give to get him, esp if Romo isn't deemed to be the heir apparent.
It would really be out of character IMO for BP to trade up for a WR but I really think Calvin Johnson is going to be a star in the NFL.
Some real elite talent on the offensive side of the ball to be had next draft. We're going to have to get some of it.

QB- we have about 2 seasons left before we have to have someone new ready to take over
WR- Our top 2 WRs will be 32...going to need some young talent asap
RB- oft injured....hopefully JJ will eliminate our concerns this year though
OT- If Pettiti and Colombo pan out we should be okay at T for a while
OG- Kosier is young, Rivera is ancient and Gurode is probably not reliable
C- AJ HAS to get it done starting this year and put this positional concern to rest

On defense the only 2 potential needs I can foresee are:
1: Passrusher to replace Ellis, but Hatcher, Burnett, and Carpenter very well could be that guy. I think our young guys more than replace Ellis's 8 sacks next season.
2: #3 CB, Glenn is really old, but Reeves may be our dude here

Here's how I outline our needs for next offseason:

1: QB, If we're planning to draft one, he'll need a year to develop, that would give Bledsoe one more year of starting....about right timeline
2: WR, we're too old here and it takes a year or two for a rookie WR to figure it out
3: OG, its make or break time for Peterman and Gurode, otherwise draft yet another G
4: RB, this I rank at 4 right now but it solely dependent upon what JJ does this year, no injuries and this need may evaporate, bad season or more injuries and this may jump to #1 or #2
5: CB, Even if Reeves takes over the #3, we'll still need one more

Hopefully we won't also need a new coach but I think BPs is dwindling fast...
As for players, our defense is pretty set, pretty deep, and very young. I don't think we need any more high draft picks over there. The offense needs a serious youth injection, esp one with first day talent. I do expect that we'll have a good chunk of cap space to sign some guys again so I expect that we'll sign some offensive player next offseason. Could be an OL. Harder to sign another WR though because TO and TG will still demand the #1 and #2 spots. Would be better to draft someone first day and bring them along. So that's my prediction at this point: we will draft a WR in 2007, probably on the first day.
QB and RB may be options for FA signings. There are almost always a few good ones available....but most of us would prefer to see Brady Quinn and Adrian Peterson. A #4 CB is pretty easy to find FA also.
If ever there was a good time and situation for us to trade way up in the first round to get a QB, RB, or WR, 2007 will be it.

I thought Stanton seems to have injury problems?

Hopefully Julius doesnt get hurt this year because we would have blown the chance to trade him and get some value if the Julius to Jets trade was offered.

Next year it is a a WR heavy draft class and I hope we can walk away with a decent WR like Jarrett, Rice or Ryan Moore from the U on the 1st day.

Then again we need to hope our Oline comes together and we dont need any starters.
